I thought I was imagining things, but it has happened on a couple of my new tips.
I have recently received a rating on 2 new tips I have posted. Both times there was only one rating for each tip. Yet the tip has a rating of 2 1/2 stars. How is that possible with only one rating? It would have to be a whole number!
Perhaps someone gave a 2 and someone else gave a 3? You'd get a 2.5 then.
I've seen a few 1/5 star ratings and assumed it was an average.
Hey Rich, I believe that a rating does not show up, until there have been a few of them done. So once you see stars by a tip, several people have rated it. I do not know however just how many it takes to have stars pop up.
The thing is that we always know when we get a rating as it shows up in notices. Rich, correct me if i'm wrong but I think you're saying that you've gotten just 1 rating notice for each of these two tips - and both are showing up with rating stars.
As it used to be that you needed more than 1 rating before we saw any stars, you're finding this surprising? Maybe they changed that old rule and we get stars on the very FIRST rating now?
Yes Kate that is what I am seeing. I posted a tip on Florence last week and was notified that it had been rated. But I only received one rating from one person.
On some other tips I have seen 2 ratings and then the 1/2 star does make sense.
I notice that many tips dont get rating until there is x amount of tips on them they show up later. Do not know the details as never into points system. However, doing my last packing for my move from VErsailles today , truck out tom to Brittany and saw 1, look up ,and I am No 1 rookie rated in VT wow:: reads weird to me nver even notice there was a rookie ranking on my other life, now what happened to no 1 rookie ? ::)
cheers from hot muggy Versailles
I've got some like that Rich, even on some obscure places. Since the change it seems as though you're given 2 1/2 stars for being a "good boy" and then once you've had a few ratings on the same tip the normal equation kicks in.
They sound like unhappy people who rated your site.
You know, you guys are right, - there was a change I do remember now where the Mothership explained that ratings would show up immediately.
(I should stick to what I know, eh?)
Just looked at it, if that is a 2.5 they don't know which way is up. Probably a competitor who found it.
Dunno how these things work anymore. Maybe just because it's showing 2.5 doesn't mean it was rated 2.5 but just what you get for stars until you compile more ratings? Dunno.
One more of life's mysteries.
I think that's right Kate, it's not actually through ratings you have 2.5 stars, that is just a given, a sort of 50/50 until you get enough ratings.
....but, but, I would rather have no rating, than having only 2.5 stars on a potential 5 star tip. As a visitor, I would think that 2.5 rating would reduce the validity of the tip by half. (Again I should stick to what I know.....)
yes better stick to what we know, hehehe !! I am back ::)

You know that may be the answer!
untill some time ago you needed to have 3 or 4 ratings before any star would show up, AND even THEN the first "result" that you would see was something like 2,5 stars that show up in the beginning and with more (good) ratings more stars showed up step by step.
NOW 1 single rating is enough and it also shows just 2,5 stars, even when you gave a 5-star-rating to somebodys new tip. and that 2,5 stars will not change for the next 3 or 4 ratings that you get and afterwards it might step up like under the old system.
Well there ya go - one of life's mysteries solved.
Only 1,999,999,999 more to go.....
Like has been stated before; while you used to have to get multiple ratings on a tip to see stars now it kicks in after 1. I have seen a similar phenomonon where I have 2.5 stars on one rating. I think the equation for computing the stars is a myatery to those outside the mothership.
If one of these tips is the hotel in Florence; I rated that one and gave you a 5. I liked the tip very much.
Ah, the way of VT Ratings Karma is simple. Yet it is not.
IMHO, you really start to enjoy VT in a whole different and more relaxed way, when you forget completely about ratings.
Worth a try ?
I don't worry about ratings, I was just curious about the 2 1/2 stars with the 1 rating which has been explained thoroughly.
I understand that Rich and from somebody who spent a lot of time figuring out the ins and outs of the rating system, can completely identify with it. Now it all flows over me like water off the proverbial duck's back and I find that more relaxing. Of course I'm also very lazy so that's part of it as well.
Maybe sometimes there is some coin flipping going on in California.
>>>...but, but, I would rather have no rating, than having only 2.5 stars on a potential 5 star tip
Hey Erik! Nice to see you around again! I sort of feel this way too about the stars sometimes. Especially when adding new tips it just takes time for the ratings to build up to more stars. I just don't look at them. LOL!
Twice when they re-did the rating system, they warned that many of us may loose stars in the process. That was a bummer. I didn't lose much either time, but see that it doesn't take too long even on obscure pages to see the rating go up.
Sorry, Rich I can't tell you why this has happened. Except, maybe to say that if the one rating was for four or five stars, it wouldn't show up as four of five until you had more rates. See what I mean?
