Just discovered I'm a "top 5" contributor for a place called Zandvoort - on the coast near Amsterdam. On closer inspection, I have written only 1 tip - about how you can get there on the train. Don't all rush to look! Do you have any top 5 ratings like that?
Yes - I have one or two dubious - to me - Top 5's. It only makes me thinki what a charade all these rankings, tops and all the rest of it are!
ah, si! well, you can get there by train; and it has been sunny, and you went there at Easter........what else would a potential traveller need to know!! hmmm, the high discernment of VT........ I don't think I have any like that; need to go check!
Yes, I am a top 5'er in Oberwesel, Germany, 1 tip, 3 photos.
Yes, for Kiel in northern Germany. 1 tip about the ferry to Sweden. Anytime when I see that 5 on the thumbnail photo I feel sad for Kiel because it has more to offer than the ferries only. But it is too far from me to explore properly and write more.
Salinas, CA: where my tip mentions how to leave the place.
Another little curious note: A few days ago i was browsing through the pages for turkish coastal towns and found a tine little page with 1 tip and 3 photos too, made by my good vt freidn Minai from Azerbaijan. The page has racked up a staggering 84000 hits though, which just proves what a photo of a pretty girl in a miniskirt can do :) "Bodrum is Ibiza of Turkey" - Bodrum by Minashka
Yes I am number 3 in Suva, Fiji. 2 tips and 4 photos. I had forgotten I even wrote it because in all honesty, I didn't really like Suva.
Iain, That really is a supurb train tip, leaving my 7 Zandvoort tips and 12 pictures in the dark, haha. I never will reached the same height as you do! PJ
.... and you are also a top writer in 14 more locations! PJ
Yes, I got a top 5 ranking a few years back for Sapa in Vietnam. Although at that time I had never been, I found a site with great photos which answered the original post. Just after that I got another top 5 for Buenos Aires for finding a link to an online map of the city for someone. They were the only two times I have made a review out of a forum answer, and bingo top 5... They have both been removed now, although Argentina is still blue on my map and I've never been there.
Struga, Macedonia. Just one tip on a hotel, and a photo on the main page. I actually feel a bit guilty about never having added anything else, since I remember writing something, and I have photos around somewhere...
I am the number 1 contributor for Chinju, South Korea. It was easy. I was near it and I saw that the only other person hadn't written much. I purposely went there so I could become number 1. Is that cheating?
Yes. I am top five in Merano pages. I've only written a couple of tips on that page.
I've been in the Top Five of South Carolina (Now #3) for as long as the Top Five have been in place. I do have eleven tips there, but really expected to drop out of sight as more people built their own more updated S.C. page. I think that all of our "mysterious" Top Fives are about the number of thoses who go to our pages and who are interested in the destination. These mysteries seem to happen mainly on very obscure pages.
@lmkluque "These mysteries seem to happen mainly on very obscure pages" Yes, a very fair comment. But I wouldn't call Salinas "very obscure". The birth place of John Steinbeck, regarded by many as a truly great writer? The home of a museum dedicated to him and his works, and the scene of some of his novels? It took 47 years to get the place of MY bucket list and into the "done" column, and I'd be more than happy to revisit
>>>But I wouldn't call Salinas "very obscure". I mean obscure in the "tourist destination" sense. Yes, Salinas is a very obscure place on the tourist town register. Not many people will search the Internet for a town, such as Salinas, to spend their vacation there--unless like you--they have an affinity for Steinbeck. See what I mean?
Yes, I take your point; Salinas doesn't have THAT much going for it, particularly when compared with Monterey, just down the road
Indeed, Salinas would definately be a must see for Steinbeck enthusiasts. East of Eden was set there. And don't forget the Chris Kristofferson classic, Bobby Magee. "And somewhere near Salinas lord, I let her slip away. She's looking for that home and I hope she finds it".
Exactly right. So, all our pages built about these more obscure places tend not to have as much competition as a town like Paris would. Very few of us are writing about Salinas so we get all the residue of researchers. Look at the Zandvoort Travel Guide's, View all Rated Pages: Top Pages for Zandvoort It takes six rated pages before anyone will become a Top Five. The four above iant have between 6-3 tips and the three below have only one tip each. So, it's easy to see why he is in the Top Five. Don't you think?
I think there are some glitches in the Zandvoort Travel Guide anyway, because the list of all rated pages shows iaint as #6, so he should not have a top5-icon on the page and member sibella is ranked there #5, but she does not have the top5-icon on her page. Normally the "list of rated pages" is up to date and the top5-icons showing on top of the page as well, while the list of Top5-writers on the main-page of a location is mostly a bit "confused" by what-ever... Just take a look on the main-page about Spain: Dr.Firas has the page #1 there AND page#5 is by Dr.Firas as well, while he certainly has just 1 single page about Spain: Spain Travel Guide
Well as I said earlier on - all this just makes me think what a charade all these rankings, tops and all the rest of it are!
One of my Prague pages has 7000 hits and my other Prague page has 1600 hits. Which one should I save?
It is getting stranger. I just checked the link about to Dr.Firas and it appears the good Doctor is now #1 AND #5 top writer for Spain. I do hope he is not suffering from a split personality!
Some of the places I have written about/been to are so obscure that there are not any other pages..so on this theory I wont get to be top 5 because I need 5 other people to put me there...pooh!
