5.2 out in gippsland near Moe didn't feel all that big to us in carrum but facebook just went nuts - and some really good jokes too some relocated chch people were ... peeved
My wife and daughter felt it in the cottage at the back of our house, but I didn't feel a thing (East Doncaster). My wife spoke to other daugher who lives in Mill Park and they really felt it. Funny, at about the time of the tremor my pet parrot went a bit feral. I thought he'd seen a cat or possum outside, but as the security sensor light did not come on, later I assumed he'd felt his cage swinging.
Updated to a 5.5 now and biggest one in melbourne for 100 years. It was scary here everything was shaking. Doesn't take long for the jokes to come out hey Jen.
Hi Sue been a long time since we met in that Indian restaurant for the mini Melb meet. Which suburb are you in now a days - just out of curiosity only. Where was that photo taken with you and the Koala on your pp. Was the Koala a dressed up person - sorry I can't reveal why I'm asking at this stage. Thanks
Glad you are all ok. That was quite a big one on the record anyway! Jen I bet the relocated Chch people were very peeved! yes and I bet facebook got busy, happens here too :-))
5.5 sounds big..glad you are ok!
5,5 is not big but can do damage too. GLad all are ok.
We had a 5.3 in Leicestershire in 2008. The shaking of the bed woke me up. And also a 4.1 in 2008, which happened when I was sitting on the floor; I felt the 'wave' ripple underneath me, which was really weird. Very disconcerting things, earthquakes: I didn't realise you could actually hear the earth move. I'm glad not much harm was caused in Melbourne.
Here in the land of earthquakes I would consider 5.5 big enough but of course it depends where the centre is and how deep as to what happens. Well worth a mention! And we are seeing Australia getting more earthquakes which is a worry!!
i didn't feel all that big out here in carrum - i would have said maybe 3.1 i like to feel in control as it is happening by guessing the number no tsunami siren so i didn't head for the hills yeah the jokes started happening straight away sue i liked the one of the outside chair tipped over and - WE WILL REBUILD MELBOURNE
>And we are seeing Australia getting more earthquakes which is a worry!! Pam, does that mean that our 2 countries are drifting further apart?
I would have though you guys were getting too close to us and catching our "bug" :-)))
Thanks Pam - seems the epic centre of our 'jolt' was under the town of Moe (pronounced mow ee) in Gippsland and even the local Woolwoths supermarket was closed down while they got stock back onto the shelves etc. So it seems it was more than a jolt. My funny bone wants to say that Victoria has been shaking since the Jaidyn Leskie case in Moe (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder...
I'm glad it appears everyone is OK. Having experienced my first earthquake a coupe of months ago, I know they are not fun. Having said that, I have a possible solution. Why don't we report earthquakes to the European parliament and they can legislate against them. The seem to be able to legislate against everything else!
5,5 is not small. My dad had a 6,6 a few years back, and everything inside the house was smashed
It was a strange experience for me. In Kew, my coffee cup on the table was having a reality mini-gale on its surface in the train-rumbling 'night pre-stillness'! Apparently lots of animals/pets went rather *beserk*. (Either spelling will do.) I'm trying to work out an omen connection with our Black Caviar upcoming *endeavour*. (Same spell thing again. Cotton-pickin'Yankee spell-checker!!) Perhaps Caviar would have gone hay-wire in her stable here and damaged herself, so Mother Nature waited until she was well safely away! Wot a 'himaginashun!! (Some gale force winds tonight are trying to get in on the act!! Enough already!)
you do have an imagination!!!
A 5.5 earthquake, even here in California eq country, gets your attention. daarth, remember that a 6.0 is 10x stronger than a 5.0 in shaking and energy release. The Richter scale considers 5.0-5.9 moderate and 6.0-6.9 strong.
and the depth matters too - and the kind of ground you are on our soil is very sandy and i wondered if that is why it felt like quite a light one to us i saw an interesting doco about ch ch recently they have a kind of loose mess on top of a bowl of rock - so anything shakes that loose mess like jelly
Watched some of the footage on telly and there was some rather noticeable 'damage' done. Earthquakes are freaky!
I knew the difference of each magnitude is 30 times so Ml 2 is 30 times stronger than Ml 1 and Ml will 900 times stronger than Ml 1 2.1 is three times stronger than 2.0
....and Ml 3 is 900...
You've lost me now guys, all this science and maths is way above me.
