From my home-town of Melbourne Dr. Jan Smith has become the second oldest woman in the world to reach the top of Mt.Everest. Hearty congrats Doctor Jan. And a Happy 68th Birthday - celebrated at the summit. What a day. Pretty hard to 'top' that for a Travelling achievement! (Yes, TWO 'l's) I nominate her for an honorary VirtualTourist prime membership! Seconders please. The story here: 3aw.com.au/blogs/neil-mitche...
Hmmmn, did Dr. Smith FEEL like the oldest woman in the world when she got to the top? heh heh, just joking...kudos to her for the feat! Bill
And I congratulate her too....BUT will she and all of her team make it back down again??...many dont..and how will she as a doctor feel about coming down past all the dead bodies?...there are at least 41 poor souls left up there because its simply too difficult and too costly to bring them back down...and of course some people consumed by avalanches and some driven to find "shelter" are never seen again...its the worlds highest graveyard ...one day people are going to have to declare it as such and stay off it!
Well done that Aussie grannie :-)
Good for her. She must be in amazing condition for her age.....or any age for that matter.
My greatest admiration for Oz is the grit of the people, she more than qualifies there. Congrats! and seconded.
GOOGLE "alanarnette.com" Read the Post "EVEREST 2012 Season Recap : A Study in Risk Management" There are also Five good summaries ( WAVES- 1 to 5) of the climbs this year. Arnette writes well Ten people died on the mountion in 2012. Some due to strokes at Base Camp.
Who was it who said "Because it was there"? A Kiwi? Or is that a different story? :-(
Lee,(Dymphnia1) your own camping and adventuring started very young - and it's in your genes. You Grandpa Wood sounds like a great guy! Well done all up.
It's amazing for someone that age to even check out base camp, let alone go to the top.
Good old Aussie G and D. Nice to 'see' you Zig. I hope you've got the jump on those *+!##!! cane toads. They are travelling too well! Send them to Everest.
Good better best, Never let it rest, Till ....
... your better's better, And your better's best. It was Dr Jan's real Best!.
