Happy Friday the 13th...be careful! Anyone concerned?

by TheTravelSlut Online Now May 13, 2011 at 6:28 AM

I don't recall the superstition behind Friday the 13th. Do others around the world have the same or similar superstition? I don't plan anything different but then again, it is not a full moon Friday the 13th......

I did hear that 13 is unlucky (especially on a Friday) as there were 13 at the Last Supper (Christ and the 12 disciples) which was on the Friday. I hsve no idea how true this is. To answer your question, no, I will not be worrying about it. My brother was born on a Friday 13th and he turned out OK!

I heard it was unlucky because people were hung on Fridays and there were 13 loops in a noose.

Friday the 13th was when French King (Phillip 1?) rounded up all the knights Templar and seized their assets and had most of them killed or imprisoned.

As I am, in general, not prone to superstition, this date has never bothered me and I've not had anything especially bad happen to me on any Friday the 13th. However, you made me curious so I looked up to see where the legend came from and noticed one thing. The source I first saw said, "The fear of Friday the 13th is called friggatriskaidekaphobia (Frigga being the name of the Norse goddess for whom "Friday" is named and triskaidekaphobia meaning fear of the number thirteen)...." Well, since Friday is named for the Norse goddess Frigga, the free-spirited goddess of love and fertility, I'd say there is good reason to worry. I wonder how many babies were born nine months after a Friday the 13th?

Ahh, The Witches Sabbath. I think Linda has the most correct response. Frigg (not Frigga), the wife of all powerful god of gods, Odinn (with two n's), was indeed banished to a mountain and called a witch. (I have been know to raise hands to the sky and yell "OOOOODINNN!!" after a few well placed shots of Icelandic Brennivin (Black Death)........ Yes Friday is named after Frigg (tha't friggin' cool eh?), but also, Thursday is named after Thor, and Wedesday is named after Odinn, or Wodinn as he was known in lower Europe. Tuesday is named after Tyr Norse god of law. Monday means literally Moon Day. Although most agree that Saturday is named for Saturn, in Norse it is Laugardagur, meaning a day of wash or bathing, the day of traditional Vikings to bathe on that day. Sunday is self explanatory. "OOOOOODINN!!"

I have also heard that 13 was considered unlucky because there were 13 people at the last supper. I have always had good luck surrounding the number 13. I even got married on Friday the 13th.

My Dad and stepmother were married on this date 27 years ago (it was a Friday the 13th that day) and they seem to be doing fine ;-) Every Friday the 13th they go out for dinner, though not sure about today as my Dad had major heart surgery 2 weeks ago. We're just glad he's still here to enjoy this Friday the 13th :-)

I presume there was a movie too made with the same title Friday the 13th By the way as far as the day is concerned, for those who believe in it, there is no escape, and for those who don't believe in it, it does not matter :-)

I was always told that the "real" Friday the 13th is only the in October... the day after my birthday :-) That's the day the Knight's Templar were arrested / killed, etc. So the only Friday the 13th to worry about is actually in October. So there :-) Calm down and carry on, people!

Thanks Jess...now, if we can only make it past May 21, July 2011 (where for the 1st time in 823 years there are 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays), and of course 2012 when the Mayan calendar expires....
