It's a small world... but I wouldn't want to paint it!

by GillianMcLaughlin Online Now Jan 8, 2010 at 4:31 PM

It's been so long since I've shown face on VT I wonder if anyone will still want to talk to me. Anyways... let's see. I've just spent new year in the south of france - Languedoc-Roussillon - in the tiniest hamlet. While there I had dinner with a very lovely couple who spoke of Bourgogne. I said I had a friend ther - a very old and good friend as it happens - she's been my penpal since I was 13. Turns out that she now lives in the same very tiny hamlet in the Morvan as the couple came from. Happens to me a lot - making these sorts of connections. What's your greatest coincidence? Happy new year to the VT crea and to thos who remember me.

Of course I remember you. I was the guy peeking through the window at your last VT meet, wondering if I should join this crazy crew. (just kidding). Anyway, I did join later and we appear to share some friends, and any friend of theirs is a friend of mine.....d:o)

In the autumn I went out for dinner a couple of times with a woman from another town in Scotland which I visit occasionally, but don't know well. Turns out her 10 y-o son is best buddies with with the 10 y-o son of a woman who was a serious girlfriend of mine about 25 years ago! They see each other all the time. We haven't kept in touch over the years, but did have a "link" while her older sister was married to one of my school friends.

Hi Gillian, good to see you back ^O^ My best "coincidence": In 1973 made friends with Yehuda and Dafna who were in a large group working on a Kibbutz here in Israel, they left for town and I left for another kibbutz, we lost contact. In 1976 I moved to Arad (where I live now) and met an American archeologist, Steve, working on a project nearby. We became good friends and he would stay with us every time he came to Israel to work. In 1980 I married Zohara. In 1992 we were preparing to move from a rented duplex into our newly built home and our friend Steve called from the US and said that a good friend of his, a fellow archeologist from Israel, was looking to rent a home in Arad and if ours was good an would it be available. I said yes it was okay and he should come look at it if he would like. Steve's friend called and spoke with my wife to set up a time for his arrival and he duly arrived at our door. Imagine my complete surprise, as well as HIS when I opened the door to discover that my friends Yehuda and Dafna (who had later married), were mutual friends with Steve ^O^ 1973-1991, 18 years and we have not lost contact since meeting up with each other again. Martin (have a number of other stories like that, as you say Gillian these things DO happen a lot ;o))
