Righto! I have here before me Marmite and Vegemite. Now, I live in a country where Vegemite is not on sale anywhere. Marmite has a small following. I will taste both and ask 10 of my friends, who do not eat either product on any regular basis, to taste too. Their preference will declare the winner: Vegemite or Marmite. My opinion will only be included if the outcome is 50/50. So VT... place your bets here! Rien ne va plus (end of bets) will be Sunday February 4th.
Got your bet loud and clear adelaidean!
In case anyone is curious about what the Vegemite package looks like, go see "Vegemite or Marmite" - Burton upon Trent by ATLC
Have tried both and also some other veggie B complex which is similar and it has to be.......drum roll please.............................................................................................MARMITE.
Vegemite wins hands down - here I sit in Yangon, having just had the big V on toast - never travel without it! .....thanks for the thanks....do you like it Anke Thea???
Hehehe, I'm not going to say if I like it, yet. Because of the bets. I'm keeping careful score on this thread and Vegemite is one bet ahead. But in general I like strong tastes including Bovril, anchovy, soy sauce, oyster sauce, different kinds of salt. Those condiments that really give a kick. btw, I have a naturally low blood pressure. Lucky me :-)
My name is not really Carole or Unravelau...... Another vote for vegemite...... Blossom
I'm going to trust you on that, Blossom
and my name is really Petal...and I vote Vegemite as well!!!! LOL
Ha, ha,. Carole.
Got to remind you folks that it's not a contest here. The contest is at my home next Sunday when I will ask many Vegemite/Marmite virgins to taste both and give verdict. You're betting on which one wins.
Oh Ok,....where abouts is the party? What time should we get there? Carole.
Birthday party.
I didn't vote for any at my previous post. Think Marmite win.
Vegemite will always beat the pretenders!
Has the trial been done yet? In my experience most people prefer the one they were brought up with. It will be interesting to see which is preferred by adults who have not tasted it before.
Dear peeps, sorry it took so long. I was rightly put in my place for forgetting to give the verdict on this contest. Well, I asked 10 of my Dutch friends and family to taste at my birthday party, beginning February. And the verdict was 8 M versus 2 V That made Marmite the winner! Like every good scientific test, I did a neutral one as well. Little Sophie, 18 months old... ate both :-) As for impersonators: Marmite was produced as from 1902 and Vegemite started in 1923. Go figure ... Thanks to thedouglas and purpleshade for sending me tubes of Vegemite. I bought them both something which I still need to post. Something that they may or may not like... We do !!! Except someone in the house found the packages and broke into them. Grrrr.

Oh well - Vegemite will prevail - thank goodness for the wise gourmets of our land! I think Vegemite is definitely an acquired taste, and the sweetness of the pretender ;) would generally lead to an early preference for that product. Interesting to see what would happen over a longer trial. Most Aussies would eat it from a very early age.
However, when it came down to counting predictions during this thread about the outcome of my little test, it was 11 for Marmite and 12 for Vegemite, where I must add that one of the votes for Vegemite was from a non-VT member via unravelau.
Ha, ha, ha......well if I had thought that the legitimate part of the test would include non members I would have added the whole family......who all prefer VEGEMITE YEAH! Carole.
well, hahaha too! Of course I wanted to be fair and accepted your non-member entry. But that's not the point. 12 of you thought Vegemite would win 11 of you thought Marmite would win. Marmite won. who's chuckling? :-))) Thanks guys, this was fun.
I'm glad it won, too, but I'm clearly biased because I have yet to taste vegemite. Does Marmite need to be refrigerated after opening?
hmm, well, if Marmite needs to be refrigerated, I've been eating rotten Marmite all my life because mine's simply in the cupboard!
Thanks, ladies. There's no indication on the label one way or the other, but it gets a bit gummy in the fridge. :)
To put Marmite in the fridge is to murder it! No...it is a cupboard dweller.
We don't even put Marmite/vegimate in the fridge here in Oz when it's over 40c :)Lesley
The same goes for Nutella... NEVER put it in the fridge! I also don't put Peanut Butter in the fridge.
I live in the tropics and I've always kept mine in the fridge as I didn't know if it would survive if I didn't. Is it safe not to then?
I don't put any of those things in the fridge either Jess, never had any problems. Lesley
