How to shut up a Cockatiel?

by poons Online Now Feb 4, 2006 at 3:50 PM

I've spent many an hour teaching my Cockatiel (a bird named Peter) to talk to me and sing some tunes for me...
Now I cannot shut him up... he's driving me crazy with "half a pound of tuppenny rice, half a pound of treacle.. that's the way the money goes round.. Pop - goes the weasel".. tsts
HELP!!!! please...
Plus what the dickens is that nursery rhyme all about anyway????

Half a pound of tu'penny rice,
    Half a pound of treacle,
thats the way the money goes,
    pop goes the weasle.

Up and down the city road
in and out of the Eagle
thats the way the money goes
    pop goes the weasle.

Pop means to pawn, and I think weasle has been corrupted from Whistle, which would be whistle and flute, cockney for suit. Fathers best suit was pawned on Monday to pay for the food for the week because he had drunk all his earnings in the Eagle pub over the weekend. His suit would be redeemed on Friday so that he could go out for a drink at the Eagle over the weekend! A never ending circle of poverty because of drink!

I used to have a Cockatiel and also a Cockatoo, they both talked a lot but the Cockatiel was so much nicer. I miss him.

My parrot has loud times of day ... and quiet ones. With talking birds they have to practice their sounds in order to remember them .... that's the several times a day they talk to themselves like schizophrenics. They also tend to be lounder in the morning and the evening. As the flock leader - you can help tone down the other times of day - but it's a bear!! Good luck, and keep any cats that have met JTF away from your home :)

Toker (my Cockatiel) had a really great personality. He would actually recognize the sound of my car pulling up and I could hear him squawking before I even got the key in the door. He would come into the shower with me and perch on the shower rod.

He's skreetching cuz he can't see his flock leader. Talk softly or hum as you wander the house ... he'll have to shut up to hear you and he'll be comforted by your voice. Does he have enough toys to keep himself occupied .... boredom is quite hard on pet birds.

I've got lots of noisy magpies here.

How many mags does it take to bake into a pie?

    not sure about Magpies though
the are a little bigger.. maybe 2 an 20 would do it!

That must be aggrevating; Peter sticking with the old UK currency. Next thing you know he will add half crowns to his repchirptoire.

I'm still thinking about John's budgie. If the cat eats the bird, does the cat start talking? And if so, what does it say?

we had a budgie who would only shut up if we covered his cage [he thought it was night then] he took quite a fancy to our priest and always asked for a kiss when he visited

I`ve been amused lately by the hugest crow I have evr seen who has moved into the field behind my house, every morning he walks up and down the path like hes on patrol

My African Grey shuts up when I tell him goodnight and cover his cage. As a matter of fact, he says goodnight himself, when he wants me to cover the cage. If am not quick enough, he starts barking! When he wants to socialise, he removes the cover by standing on one foot, grabbing hold of the cage with the beak and pushing the cover back with his other foot! He teases me with it, too, makes me put on the cover and then removes it.

When I have enough, I start whistling Beethoven's 5th symphony, and he starts singing with me, not in a duet, but a canon :-)

Btw. I have two cats, one of them pretends the parrot doesn't exist, the other is afraid of him since Jacko, the parrot, bit his toe ;-)

Jacko sounds a real character Marit...
My Peter is being real good tonight - as quiet as a lamp... aaaaahhhh
I like when he sings and talks... it's just he squarks real loud for attention when he feels left out of things.

one is a canure...and they never shut up...I would not recommend getting one..its extremely mean...all of our other pets are afraid of it...and it dont back off either. It hates me....everytime it see me, this crazed look comes over it...

Its like satan in a birds body!!
