A lone traveller visiting Bratislava and western Slovakia Posted: Sat October 3, 2009 03:51 AM UTC
Dobry d'en
I am travelling through Europe and have booked a hostel in Bratislava for two nights.
As I arrive from Vienna at about midday I would like to spend the rest of the day having a good look around the city, and believe the Castle is worth looking at, as well as several palaces in the old city (stary miesta)? Please can you advise.
I'm also intertested in public transport and would like suggestions about what tickets are best to buy, a good tram and a good trolleybus ride.
Are there any good walking tours organised by local people please.
Please also advise me of places you would recommend me to eat/drink, I think places near to the central area are going to cost more?
I have a full day and have read about places called Trencin and Zilina which i can travel by train. The reviews say these are very interesting and usually missed by tourists, which makes them more interesting for me.
Finally on the Sunday 25th October I need to travel by train from Bratislava to Ljubljana and would like to know train times please.
Dakujem pekne

leaving luggage Posted: Mon September 28, 2009 05:42 AM UTC
Plan of arriving in Vienna by air. Then want to take bus to Bratislava and then bus to Prague and then back to Vienna for a flight to Asia. I have a lot of luggage as I will be staying in Asia for 4 months. I don't what the hassle of carrying this luggage all over and want to leave it at either the airport in Vienna or first stop in Bratislava.
Anyone know where I can leave my luggage at airport or downtown Vienna or at a bus station in Bratislava?

language law Posted: Fri September 11, 2009 08:25 PM UTC
I was planning to visit Slovakia but I read that there is a new law that fines people who speak Slovakian incorrectly or speak a foreign language with Slovak officials. Is this true? It seems hard to believe... Are tourists exempt from the law? What about the ethnic minorities? (I an just imagine trying to fine all the immigrants in the US for speaking broken English)

Does Bratislava castle represent Slovakia? Posted: Wed August 12, 2009 02:37 PM UTC
Hi, guys,
I wanted to know what you think about a thing:
would Bratislava castle represent Slovakia?
Or the coat of arms is better?
Is there anything else that represents this country?(something that would be easy to represent on paper, as a logo, you know)
I need it for the cover of my research on Slovakian ethnicity
Thanks for help!

staying in bratislava area Posted: Mon August 10, 2009 10:32 AM UTC
Hi!
I'm coming to Slovakia at the end of august. I want to spend a couple of days visiting Bratislava before enjoying the Tatra mountains, but I'd prefer to find a pension in the surrounding area, and to take my car just to get to town but not inside town. Will I find parkings, maybe near bus or train stations?
thanks for your suggestions!

Trekking + relaxing Posted: Fri August 7, 2009 01:27 PM UTC
Hello!
I'm thinking of taking a long week-end (3-4 days) in Slovakia in late August, but I haven't decided the exact destination.
What I'd like is to stay at a comfy hotel, good if it has a spa (my girlfriend's wish, of course). Furthermore it should be in the mountains with trekking possibilities close by. (I am fairly experienced in trekking and am not interested in guided tours).
Any suggestions? Replies are greatly appreciated!!

Railway Station >>> Airport Posted: Thu July 23, 2009 02:11 PM UTC
Hi all!
I need to go to the airport from the railway station. I've checked the timetables but seems I may not be able to do it.
So I'm arriving to Bratislava hl. st. at 08:00 (hopefully) and must be at the airport no later than 09:20. Do I have a good chance to catch that goddam plane?
Your suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

in Bratislava for a day Posted: Wed July 22, 2009 11:00 AM UTC
My family is planning a trip to Vienna in September. Since some of my ancestors are from Bratislava, I would like to visit there for a day. If someone could help me with the following questions, I would be appreciative:
1. Is one Saturday there enough to see a majority of the city?
2. Is there a reputable company that guides tours in English or would the city be best visited by one's self on foot?
3. Is Bratislava best visited from Vienna by train?
4. Do many people in Bratislava speak English, German or Russian?
5. What are typical souvenirs from Bratislava?
Thank you,
Michael

Visiting Hungary and Czech republic via Bratislava in Slovakia Posted: Mon June 15, 2009 12:24 AM UTC
Hello everyone ;)
I will be in Bratislava in the end of August, I desperately need the EXACT prices and timetables to go from Bratislava to Praha and Budapest, but especially to the close Hungarian town of Masonmagyarvornear Bratislava. Did someone ever come to this little town, how is it?
I already looked in so many forums and train and transport websites but I am totally lost, I spent days to get the infos and still have nothing! I look for the cheapest way, bus or train.
By the way, if anyone have tips and advises for these countries through their travel experiences, it would be perfect.
Thank you so much, :)

Centrally located hotel or pension? Posted: Sat June 6, 2009 07:09 PM UTC
Hi,
I'll be staying for one night in Bratislava later this month. Can anyone recommend a hotel or pension - needs to be in or within walking distance of the Old Town and Danube. Doesn't need to be luxurious, just clean and centrally located :)
Cheers Phil

Candlelight tour at Bojnice castle Posted: Tue June 2, 2009 08:39 PM UTC
I'm wondering how photographic the candlelight tour of the castle is. It sounds really neat, but if it's going to be dark, it might not be good for taking pictures of the rooms and architecture. So I'm wondering if I should book a day tour in addition to a night tour? Or will the night tour be the exact same tour as the day, only by candlelight? Thanks if anyone knows.

From Bratislava to Czech R. by train - please help Posted: Sun May 24, 2009 05:15 PM UTC
I'm trying to find out the price for train travel from Bratislava to Breclav or Decin with and without EC trains.
I already checked with jizdenka.cz and know that should be 5.80 EUR to Breclav. Does this price change if I use EC trains and carry a bicycle?
My ultimate goal is Germany, either Leipzig or Dresden. I'm trying to get to the Czech-Saxon border as cheap as possible by train from either Slovakia or Austria. I'll be coming from Hungary on the Danube Cycle trail. Current plan is to go as far as Bratislava, but if time allows I might go on into Austria.
Any ideas?

2 weeks in Eastern Europe starting from Vienna International airport Posted: Sun April 5, 2009 02:53 PM UTC
Hi! we are 3 Singaporean couples in our 60s and we are planning a rail trip of 14 nites to Eastern Europe. Our present itinerary:Alternative A
3rd June(Wed) Leave Vienna for Budapest, (3 nites in Budapest)
6th june (Sat) Leave Budapest for Poprad Tatry via Kosice (3 nites in PT)
9th June (Tues) Leave Poprad Tatry for Krakow (3 nites in Krakow)
12 June (Fri) Leave Krakow for Prague (3 nites in Prague)
15June (Mon) Leave Prague for Vienna (2 nites in Vienna)
so we are doing a loop journey.
the other thing i was planning (Alternative B)would be from
Vienna to Budapest to Poprad Tatry to Prague to Krakow and then to Vienna.
1)Which would you consider to be the better alternative in terms of scenic railrides and travel time?
2)Also a little worried about schedules of trains or Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. wondering if they are regular and connections are frequent.very likely buying East European Railway pass and wondering if this will allow me to travel on
a)local trains within each country
b) whether i need to make reservations for all the trips cos it would cost us a tidy sum to make reservtions for every journey
3) Do you think i have set aside enough time to cover the cities ?i guess there always isn't enough time but we can spare a day from vienna cos we have been there before and done it quite extensively. if so, to which city should i give it to?
4) Is there a website where i can check the prices of train journeys across countries?and which are in English.
Appreciate any help i can get. Many thanks and enjoy yourself wherever u r, VTers!God bless
