| Tokyo | Tokyo bars for a lone traveler Posted: Thu May 29, 2008 08:33 PM UTC
I'm going to Japan for the first time this fall, I plan on staying in Tokyo for 5 days. Just wondering if anyone can recommend any good drinking holes one could visit alone and not feel like a total weirdo. I don't plan on totally avoiding the touristy bars but I do plan on hopefully spending some time rubbing elbows with the locals and getting to know the culture better.

| Tokyo | voltage converter Posted: Thu May 29, 2008 07:12 PM UTC
Hello!
In July I will move from Sweden to Tokyo and I have a desktop computer that I would like to bring with me. The problem is that that it runs on 220V and in Tokyo I heard it is only 100V. I seen some voltage converters on internet but I have not been able to find one that converts from 100V to 220V. Im thinking of buying one that is quite powerful, between 500-1000W. Any ideas on where in Tokyo I could find such a voltage converter? Thanks for your help! /Daniel |

| Tokyo | Tokyo - June 08 Posted: Tue May 27, 2008 07:40 AM UTC
I will be travelling to Tokyo and its surrounds in 2 weeks' time, between 8 - 15 June 08.
- What will be the climate like during this period in terms of temperature and rainfall? Will a light windbreaker or jacket be necessary? - I would like to shop for children's toys for my nephews and nieces ( robots, legos, barbie and stuff) at affordable prices. Will be staying at a hotel in Shinagawa and travelling to Ueno, Shibuya,Shinjuku. Where will be the best concentration of good toy shops be? - I would also like to shop for jewelleries for my mother( who particularly like ornamental pearls and stones). Where will be the shops which I can purchase genuine ones and at affordable prices? - Will be spending about 1.5 days at Hakone. What will be the must-see around there? Thanks. |

| Tokyo | From Narita to Tsukiji station Posted: Mon May 26, 2008 04:08 AM UTC
We are trying to figure out how to get from Narita to Chuo-ku
The exact address is: 3-17-10 Tsukiji, Chuo-ku, Tokyo 104-0045 Our plan so far is: - Take a Keisei Skyliner (2000 Y) or Keisei Limited Express (1000 Y) - Transfer at UENO station to the Hibiya Subway Line that will get us to Tsukiji station. - walk for about 1 or 2 blocks We are planning to purchase the PASMO card to pay for that ride as well as to pay for the subway during next few days. Our reason for 'Pasmo' rather than 'Tokyo Free Kippu' or 'Toei and Tokyo Metro One-Day Economy Pass' is that we probably will not get on the subway after arriving to our hotel. During our entire stay in Tokyo (short stay) we are planning to go to only few places and prepaid card make more sense than unlimited card (you would have to use the unlimited card at least 6 times a day) My question is: AM I CORRECT? HAVE YOU DONE IT? ANY OTHER IDEAS? |

| Tokyo | Yikes Last minute travel accomodation needed Posted: Mon May 19, 2008 02:46 PM UTC
I am going to be in Tokyo Tomorrow for a week and have made no accomodations. I was hoping to find a hotel or ryoko or apt to rent for two people preferably with a bathroom I am not able to find anything less than $100/ night. We are getting the Japan rail pass and will be going to different regions.
I am thinking I may just have to do the hostel thing but am a light sleeper and thought this might not be comfortable for two people. Thanks for any tips! |

| Tokyo | Where its happening! Posted: Wed May 14, 2008 02:03 AM UTC
Greetings,
I am coming for the first time to Japan from May20-27th. I would love to find a used record store, and see some live music. I am interested in 60's garage, punk or an unusual night spot. I hope to find something down to earth not a pricey to get in pretensious place. Also are there any magazines for expats that might be in english that list cultural evfents or night life happenings? Thank you! |

| Tokyo | Touring the Imperial Palace Posted: Tue May 13, 2008 07:05 AM UTC
Hi I am a little confused on how I can tour the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. I read that we need to register for a "pass" to gain entry. I did and I understood that the tour will be conducted in Japanese. I don't understand Japanese but I registered because I wanted to visit. I understand that the inner palace is out of bounds.
Do we really have to walk with the group? The palace grounds do not accept walk-ins? If I have a pass but do not wish to join the ground, can I just use that as an "entrance ticket" to roam around the permissible area? Thanks. |

| Tokyo | JR ticket prices Posted: Sun April 27, 2008 12:30 AM UTC
I am confused about the JR ticket prices. I am taking the Bullet train from Tokyo to Odawara (Hakone). JR website indicates a Fare of Yen 1,450 and a Reserved Seat Charge of Yen 2,190.
If I do not need a Reserved Seat, do I need to pay the Yen2,190 charge. Can I just pay only Yen 1,450 to go from Tokyo to Odawara? I posted the JR fare here at this site. http://geocities.com/leeweenee/ |

Hi. I heard there are two giant malls - seibu and tobu - and that theres tons of stores. There is this basement that sells all sorts of foodstuffs. Any idea when this basement closes, or when most of the stores close in the mall itself?
Also, where is this Sunshine City? When do the aquariums, museums etc close? |

| Tokyo | I have 4 days in Japan, Where should I go? Posted: Thu April 24, 2008 12:38 AM UTC
Hi VT!
Let me clarify, I will still stay 4 days in Tokyo and I have 4 days to spend traveling around the rest of Japan. I wish I could stay longer. This is my first trip to Japan. I am going to buy a rail pass to travel around. Where do you recommend I go to see the most interesting things in the shortest amount of time. I was thinking: 1 day in Kyoto, 1 day in Nara, 1 day in Osaka, 1 day Mt.Fuji area. Is this the best itinerary? Or what else do you recommend and why? I would like to thank you in advance for all the VT travelers who help me out. Please feel free to share as much information as you would like. It will be greatly appreciated it :o) Have a beautiful day! |

| Tokyo | Hotels on Yamanote Line Posted: Wed April 23, 2008 09:40 PM UTC
Hello!
Can you recomend a good hotel with short walking distance to Yamanote Line. I`ve heard that should be good for access to all the places in the city. We want to stay in an area with something going on, but it doesn`t have to be Shinjuku/Shibuya-going-on. Many people in here talks about Asakusa. Is that a good area? |
