Do it Yourself or Take a Tour Posted: Fri October 30, 2009 09:27 AM UTC
I am visiting Tokyo and wanted to see Mt.Fuji/Kyoto.
Is it cheaper to try to plan these out myself on the JR Rail or to go on a day tour?

Shinjuku to Disneyland Resort Posted: Mon October 26, 2009 06:41 PM UTC
I plan to transfer from a hotel in Shinjuku to Disneyland resort WITH 1 big luggage and 1 kid.
If I were to take a train on a Sunday from Shinjuku station around afternoon, how crowded would the train station be? What is a better option to go about doing this transfer to minimize the hassle?
Appreciate your advice. Thank you.

Searching for an address in Shibuya Ku Posted: Sat October 10, 2009 02:32 PM UTC
I wish to find the house my mother lived in just after the war
at that time it was called US House 60, Shibuya Ku
it was owned by a Saitto San who lived in the grounds with his family
I have had no luck whilst here in Tokyo and have to leave before Tuesday (without knowing Monday was a public holiday!)
Can anyone assist?
Thankyou

Tokyo Rail and Subway Question Posted: Wed October 7, 2009 05:52 AM UTC
Hi all. I'm new to Virtual Tourist and ran across this site as I was searching for answers for an upcoming trip to Tokyo. My question is quite specific and I'm hoping someone can answer it for me. I will be traveling to Tokyo next month and have been researching the various passes to get between the multiple subway and train lines. Our hotel is on Odaiba because we intend on spending part of our visit at the Toyko Disneyland Resort. We will also be spending several days exploring Tokyo. I am looking for the most cost effective way to get around the city. I have found conflicting information about which passes can be used on the Rinkai Line. Will purchasing either the Tokyo Furii Kippu for 1580 yen or Tokunai Pass for 730 yen allow me unlimited travel on the Rinkai Line? Also, is unlimited travel on the Yurikamome Line only availabe using the Yurikamome pass for 800 yen?
Thank you for any assistance you can provide.
Regards, Tim

Best way to get from Nikko Tokyo Hotel to Tsukiji market Posted: Thu October 1, 2009 06:39 PM UTC
Hi,
Anyone knows what is the best route to take by rail from Nikko Tokyo Hotel to Tsukiji fish market? What is the duration like? And what is the cost like?
Which prepaid card should I get? Suica or PASMO? Or is there any other better option if I will only be using it on for 1 day in Tokyo.
How much does it cost to take a taxi from Nikko Tokyo Hotel to Tsukiji fish market?
How about bus? What bus can I take and what is the travelling time and cost?
Thank you.

We are in Tokyo next week and will be joining a cruise ship at Kobe International Passenger Terminal.
Is is feasible to get a train from Tokyo to break our journey at Kyoto for a short visit before going on to Kobe.
Is there left luggage at the station?
How long will it take to get from Tokyo to Kyoto and then Kyoto to Kobe?
Our boat leaves at midnight.
Thanks

Where to find FC Tokyo shirts Posted: Mon September 28, 2009 12:06 AM UTC
Well, looks like going to Ajinomoto stadium takes over an hour one way so that one is out.
Is there a place in Tokyo where I can get some FC Tokyo shirts to bring back as presents? - If it's close to the Shirokanedai area or by Shibuya Station (both places I'll be close to) - it will be a plus.
Actually, a nice sporting good store that carries the jerseys would be great - preferably near those areas.

Tsukiji Fish Market Posted: Sun September 27, 2009 11:36 PM UTC
I am looking into visiting the Tsukiji fish market - have found the site.
http://www.tsukiji-market.or.jp/tukiji_e.htm
- I understand you should try to be there by 5:30 am ... however if they don't let people into the Tuna auction, is it necessary to be there that early?
- For a woman traveling alone, any dangers running around the metro at 5 am coming from the Shirokanedai area?
- Is all the "action" done by 9 am or so?

Odds of getting a seat to Kyoto Posted: Fri September 25, 2009 09:29 PM UTC
OK - I've been thru the Japan rail stuff already - but the recent post raised some doubts.
I am arriving in Tokyo around 3 PM on a Tuesday mid-October. No rail pass - this has been decided. What are my odds of actually getting to Kyoto and not being stuck without a train?
I'll be taking the Narita Express to Tokyo station and purchasing my ticket there.
One other thing - will the ticket have to be paid in cash, or will they take a US credit card. Will this be a ticket machine or a human?
Thx.

We will need to travel in and around Tokyo on the 2 days we are there. From Tokyo we have to get to the cruise terminal at Kobe (Osaka) on the train. Can anyone explain to me what my best options are. I have heard about discount tickets, rail passes, booked seats etc but can't understand any of it. HELP!

Where do I buy NEX tickets ??? Posted: Tue September 22, 2009 06:47 PM UTC
Hello all my friends....I'll be visiting the land of the rising sun next month and I've been having problems finding out information on the Narita Express .... Everywhere I read said make reservations because trains fill up fast...but as a foreigner it seems impossible to make them on the JR web site !!!! Can I just arrive in Tokyo (Narita) and walk over to the NEX desk and buy a ticket ????? for the next train into downtown Tokyo.
And my second question is ... I'll only be in Tokyo 3 days ..... Is there a subway or metro pass I could buy for all day travel for a price ???? In Paris it's 7 Euro's all day on the metro, London 5 pounds all day . Does Tokyo have a all day card for the metro or subway ????
Like always thank you for your time in helping out a fellow traveler !!!!

japanese? Posted: Fri September 18, 2009 05:26 PM UTC
I am considering going to Tokyo but a bit worried about the language barrier.
1. If i get lost, How difficult would it be to find someone who can speak some english to get direction?
2. How difficult is it to find restaurants with english menu or a waiter that can speak english?
3. Are all the street names in Kanji? Would i have a difficult time matching the street names on a map to the street signs?

Traveling to japan for 1 month: Housing and Working Questions Posted: Sat September 12, 2009 03:32 AM UTC
Hi all,
I'm currently a student but am going to take a little time off from school to travel. I'm planning on flying to Tokyo, Japan and hope to stay there for at least 3 weeks to a month before heading on a westward route through Asia and Europe and back to the US. I've been researching customs, living, etc. and notice that it is very expensive to live in the central city. I was hoping if anyone can help me find a place that's the cheapest to live ( I don't mind and prefer if it's in a nearby province and cheaper). I'm comfortably with pretty much an living condition. Also, I was reading laws on working and was wondering if it's at all possible to work so I can pay for the housing and the cash I have saved up can be used as extra cash I'll have on hand. I'm not traveling as a student but as a tourist. Early thanks for all the help!

Japan Oyster Card? Posted: Tue September 1, 2009 02:58 PM UTC
Hi guys!
Just wondering if there is any smart card system in Tokyo for using the public transport (JR and Metro), like "Oyster Card" in England? or we have to buy individual ticket?
I don't think the JR pass is useful for us as we will be only visiting the metropolitan area in Tokyo.
Thanks!

Night life and dress codes Posted: Sat August 22, 2009 05:36 AM UTC
Hey guys,
I'm planning to go to Japan early next year with a friend and whilst I'm not really the type of person to go to night clubs and pubs etc I'm sure my friend will drag me along.
Anyways, I was wondering what type of clothing is expected of people who go to night clubs? I generally just like to wear a flat colored tshirt (I'll be picking up an Icebreaker before leaving) and some dark pants.
Am I expected to wear more formal clothing? If so, do you have any suggestions for good travel clothing that fits the dress code? Keep in mind that I'm trying to pack ultralight. :-)
Thanks in advance.

Changing money to Yen Posted: Fri August 21, 2009 06:22 AM UTC
I am told it is easier to carry cash yen, especially when traveling outside urban areas. If I were to cash 8000 Swiss Francs (about 8000 US$) is it best to cash outside Japan, at Narita or at a major Tokyo bank.
Thank you for your help.
