Kizhi Kizhi Island artist
Posted: Sun October 28, 2007 04:09 PM UTC
Last month while on a Russian waterways cruise we stopped at Kizhi Island. There was an artist, an elderly man, at work making a pencil sketch of the 1876 Oshenev farmhouse with the wooden Transfiguration Cathedral behind it. He had some of his pictures laid out for sale. I didn't buy one but my friend did. Does anyone know this man's name? We would like to contact him if possible.

Sortavala Travel to Sortavala
Posted: Sun March 11, 2007 12:44 PM UTC
Hello

I would be grateful if anyone can advise me.

I wish to travel to the Sortovala area (my mother was evacuated from this region in 1940 & 1944 - Laskela & Harlu to Finland).

I will be travelling from the UK (Manchester) & would like to see some other parts of Russia - maybe St Petersburg.

What would be the best way to do this? Travel from Helsinki to St Petersberg to Sortovala?
or from Estonia? or Russia (need to take cheap flight)
Best method of transport? Train? Hire a car?
Best way to find accommodfation?
Best time of year to travel?
How to keep it cheap?
Things to see?
How safe is it?
Any advice on visas/ money?

I would be grateful for any help as I have only just began to explore this idea & am finding it difficult to find information.
Kind regards
Kardrew

Hi, I'm looking for the street address of a person in Petrozavodsk. I have been unable to find any online phone books so I thought I'd ask here if there's anyone from Petrozavodsk who could help me out by looking it up in the phone book, or if you know of any other ways to find it.

Please send me an email if you think you can help, I'd be very grateful. My email address is nisse@wadensten.com .

Respublika Kareliya Road trip, part II
Posted: Fri March 12, 2004 11:23 AM UTC
How is the road from Petrozavodsk to Kem?

Are there some places I should not miss on the way?

Is it easy to camp in this region (actually sleeping in a small lorry)?
Maybe a stupid question, but are there any camp sites?
Is it allowed to camp in the countryside?
Any danger concerning bears?
Mosquitoes?

Thanks!

Going from Saint Petersburg to Petrozavodsk:

Would you choose the Eastern road through Lodeynoye Pole?

Or the Western road through Sortavala?

And why?

Thanks a lot!
