Oaxaca de Juárez Prices in Oaxaca....
Posted: Mon April 28, 2008 08:17 PM UTC
This year we went to the Puerto Vallarta area and found it VERY expensive. Almost the same prices as at home in the US for restaurants and hotels.

Are thing cheaper in Oaxaca ? there is less motivation to go to Mexico if it's going to cost so much !

Thanks

Oaxaca de Juárez December Trip to Oaxaca Planned
Posted: Mon May 14, 2007 04:54 PM UTC
My husband & I are going to be in Oaxaca de Juarez the first two weeks of December, 2007. This is to be an exploratory trip in preparation for my retirement in a couple years. What should we plan to see? We'd like to meet some people who have retired there. Anyone interested? We'll have a rental car, is that a good idea? Would like to spend a couple nights here and there, not all in one place but all within hollering distance of the city.

Oaxaca de Juárez Casa Pereyra on Independcia?
Posted: Thu April 19, 2007 01:09 AM UTC
Does anyone know if Casa Pereyra on Independencia (across from the Basilica) had to close due to all the earlier protests? I have reservations for the fall, but I just noticed their website is gone. I can only locate a generic page on mexonline.com.

If you've been to Oax recently or live there, I would greatly appreciate an update on this hotel if you happen to know anything. But I really hope it's still open.

Thank you,
Victoria

Oaxaca de Juárez Christmas in Oaxaca
Posted: Tue September 26, 2006 10:02 PM UTC
We would like to travel to Oaxaca for Christmas, But we are a bit concerned about the security risk and heath facilities there. We have been to many remote places in the world, regardless of travel warnings etc. But we always check them out first thru venues such as travel forums etc.

Thanks in advance

Oaxaca de Juárez Warning Issued for traveling to Oaxaca
Posted: Thu August 10, 2006 09:36 PM UTC
The U.S. Embassy in Mexico has now issued a warning to travelers visiting Oaxaca or intending to do so - as a result of the escalating protests/violence. Here's the text:

"August 8, 2006

Warden Notice Regarding Demonstrations in Oaxaca City, Oaxaca

The U.S. Embassy advises its citizens in Oaxaca to avoid demonstrations being held by teachers and students. In recent weeks, the Teacher’s Union Groups have held demonstrations throughout the city of Oaxaca. Local media have reported vandalism, arrests, and injuries as a result of the ongoing confrontations. U.S. citizens in the vicinity are encouraged to avoid large crowds in the Oaxaca area. All persons are encouraged to remain in their homes or hotels, and to avoid downtown Oaxaca and surrounding areas during active demonstrations. Because striking teachers reportedly may attempt to close local airport facilities and the main highway linking Mexico City and Oaxaca, U.S. citizens in the area are advised to monitor local news reports and to contact their airline to confirm flight information.

We wish to remind U.S. citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. U.S. citizens are urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any protests. Since the timing and routes of marches and demonstrations are always subject to change, U.S. citizens should monitor local media sources for new developments."

I note that the VT pages only show Holiday Inn Express. Is there a hostel or other reasonably cheap, but safe and clean place to stay near the zocalo?

Oaxaca de Juárez Solo female traveller wants to meet VTers in Oaxaca

Hi. I'll be in the city of Oaxaca from January 18 to 25, on a solo vacation. If anyone else will be there at the same time and would like to meet, let me know. I think evenings would be better as I'll be out and about during the days (what with all the attractions around the city!). Cheers!

Oaxaca de Juárez To Rent Or Not To Rent, That Is The Question
Posted: Mon April 25, 2005 06:00 PM UTC
My wife and I plan to visit Oaxaca the last 10 days of May and are debating whether to rent a car for 5-7 days to visit Monte Alban, Tule, Mitla, and other outlying areas. Money is not the biggest issue. We were wondering whats the overall best, most convienent, most fun way to get around in the Oaxaca area.

Thanks,

Oaxaca de Juárez p.m. Aerotucan flight from Oaxaca to Huatulco
Posted: Tue March 8, 2005 10:17 PM UTC
My family (husband and 2 children ages 5 and 7) and I are hoping to contract a charter flight with Aerotucan in the afternoon on Saturday, March 26. Aerotucan will schedule a "private" flight for just the 4 of us, but will schedule another "regular" flight if 4 other adults request the flight as well. If anyone is interested in flying from Oaxaca to Huatulco in the afternoon rather than the morning of the 26th, please contact either me or Aerotucan as soon as possible.

I can be directly contacted at imdunwithlouie@hotmail.com

Thanks,

Oaxaca de Juárez living and working
Posted: Wed February 23, 2005 08:11 PM UTC
I thinking of moving To Caracas in September with my Colombian wife, and was wondering if anybody had any info about how easy it is to get work there, as my finances mean i can't afford the luxury of being a man of leisure. I've worked as an English teacher before, worked in bars etc, my Spanish is pretty good but not quite perfect. Any info on volunteering would also be handy. Also any info on cheap apartments, working visas etc would be very useful and appreciated. any websites would be lovely.

Cheers Finbar

Oaxaca de Juárez Lodging in Oaxaca?

Hi - I was hoping someone could recommend a nice, laid-back place, maybe a B&B, to stay in Oaxaca City. I'm looking for something fairly inexpensive, but doesn't have to be super-cheap. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks so much!

Oaxaca de Juárez road to oaxaca
Posted: Thu January 20, 2005 11:56 PM UTC
Is the toll road from Mexico City to Oaxaca particularly windy or prone to inducing nausea? I had a few dizzying rides so far, and don't want to get into a 6 hour ride of curves and dizziness. Has anyone done the trip that can testify as to how straight or non-straight the road is?

Oaxaca de Juárez lodging in Puerto Escondido
Posted: Wed November 17, 2004 02:58 AM UTC
We will be staying in Puerto Escondido for a week in January. We have narrowed the lodging down to Arco Iris, Surf Olas Altas and HOtel Santa Fe. We like a nice clean room with a veiw and where we can hear the waves at night and leave the windows open. A queen or king size bed and in a safe area close to town. No TV or telephone required. Any thoughts on these places?? Thanks so much!

Oaxaca de Juárez Oaxaca this December
Posted: Thu November 4, 2004 07:47 AM UTC
Hi, I'm thinking of going to Oaxaca this December to practice my Spanish and to take photos.

I'm looking for tips on flights, buses etc. I checked flights from Vancouver to Oaxaca and it looks like it is around $900 - does anyone know of a more reasonable way to get there? I have about 10-14 days.

Also wondering - is this a good place to be fully immersed in Spanish or is this too touristy. If it's too touristy, can you suggest a small villiage nearby that would be safe for a single gal?

Thanks and happy travels!

Oaxaca de Juárez RT transport from Oaxaca to Palenque
Posted: Sat October 23, 2004 02:18 PM UTC
A group of 12 women are meeting in Oaxaca on January 20th, 2005. Three of us would like to arrive earlier than the rest and travel to and from Palenque. Does anyone have suggestions for accomplishing this on-the-cheap? We are a gutsy bunch but see no sense in tempting fate.

Rent a car? Maybe a bad idea with all the admonitions posted on loneyplanet.
Public transport:? Can it be pre-booked? Price?
Fly? Carriers? Cheap???

We exhausted our other resources. Then I thought of all you helpful people in VirtualTourist.

Oaxaca de Juárez Air from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido or Huatulco

I can't find any flights from Oaxaca to Huatulco or Puerto Escondido that cost less that $400 round trip. They all go via Mexico City and take four to five hours. I've looked into Expedia and Travelocity and tried Mexicana's website to no avail. Any ideas?

Oaxaca de Juárez Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido
Posted: Fri December 19, 2003 12:15 PM UTC
I'm planning a week in Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido in mid January. I'll be flying into Oaxaca from the U.S. I'll be in Oaxaca for a few days and then go to Puerto Escondido. Should I use public transportation or should I rent a car? I saw an ad for a company that rents bikes to tour the Oaxaca area. I'd like to ride around, and the ad says you can bike to villages in the countryside to see weavers and pottery and crafts. Is it safe for two middle age gringos to bike around? How hilly is the area?

I guess the title says it all. I am intending to fly to PE from Oaxaca, and would like to know if I need to reserve in advance or can I get my reservations when I am there. Are there a lot of flights? Any information appreciated.

Also, will I need a sweater at night in Oaxaca City?

Thanks

Oaxaca de Juárez Day of the Dead in Oaxaca
Posted: Sun July 6, 2003 02:55 AM UTC
I'm in the beginning stages of thinking of taking about a week to go to Oaxaca for the Day of the Dead festivities.

I wondered if anyone has traveled there during that holiday, and, if so, is it overrun with tourists? In addition, is it too late to get inexpensive accomodations?

Other information, including pros and cons about being in Oaxaca during that time would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
