I am considering taking a tour to St Petersburg this upcoming October, from about the 20th through the end of the month. I was wondering I can expect from the weather, hours of daylight, etc. In other words, is late October a nice time to visit St Petersburg?

Hello, I plan to travel tSt. Petersburg with my mom next year (around end March). But I got freaked out a bit when I read a news article about a Vietnamese student that got attacked, and other posts in other boards that talked about racial discriminiation against Asians in Russia. Some say that the unrest caused by Chechen insurgents have made some Russians jumpy and security has been tightened (notorious passport checks!) . We are hiring a private tour guide for 7 days, but the guide won't be with us 24/7, especially during the overnight trainride from St. Petersburg to Moscow. That worries me, because skinheads reportedly hang-around the metro for victims. Would it be safe for 2 chinese ladies to travel to St. Petersburg next year? I would appreciate everyone's thoughts on this matter, especially from other Asians who have travelled to Russia.

My friend and I are thinking of going maybe to Helsinki (or somewhere close to the Russian border - Estonia/Latvia). We were wondering how easy it is to visit St.Petersburg from outside the country. Are you allowed to travel in and out on a daily basis, or do you still need visas etc, and if so, how difficult are they to get?
