Getting from Gara de Nord to Otopeni Posted: Mon July 14, 2008 01:42 AM UTC
Hey all,
I just want to recheck the directions to otopeni from Garah de nord. I remember that after Gara de nord, I can walk to Piata Victoria (or take a metro, i guess M1 red line or something) but after that I dont remember where exactly is the bus stop for the 783 express airport bus. Can anyone please tell me on which road of piata victoria it is located? And am I correct about the metro? I have never actually traveled with metro before so I am not that sure about it. And yes I have a map and a compass so getting around wont be a problem. I just need the spots and the directions.
Thanks everyone for helping me out all the time.
Smash.
PS: I can buy tickets from the bus & metro itself right? Or I have to go to the small kiosk of RATP to get tickets?

Directions to UK Embassy from Gara De Nord Posted: Sat June 28, 2008 10:21 AM UTC
Hey everyone,
I am a student studying for now in IASI but I have an appointment in the UK embassy of Bucharest. The thing is, I know how to get from here to Gara de Nord but after that I just know that its somewhere around McDonalds but I really dont know the directions. If anyone of you can please point me in the directions towards the UK Embassy from Gara de Nord. I have a map so I guess it would be easier for me to go to any piata around. And yeah, I plan to walk rather than to take a cab or a bus.
Thanks once again Virtual Tourist...

My friend sent a link to Frommers which praised this small hotel. No reviews of it in the travel forum. Those of you "on the ground": A good idea (location-wise)?

Affordability question Posted: Mon June 2, 2008 08:01 AM UTC
I'm trying to find a European destination that is still on the affordable side in U.S. dollars. That's getting harder to do. Can anyone that is familiar with it tell me if things are as cheap there (in dollars) as I've heard they were? Also, does anyone have any recommendations on how to get there from the U.S. cheaply. Thanks..

Bucharest souvenirs? Posted: Fri May 2, 2008 09:57 AM UTC
Hello all
Is it possible to buy souvenirs in Bucharest? What i'm looking for in particular is souvenir tea spoon. You know, it would have a little Bucharest symbol on the top of it.
But i'm curious if it is possible more than anything.
Thanks

Snooker&Bucharest.... unlikely combo Posted: Wed April 30, 2008 09:46 PM UTC
Hello all
This is going to seem like a crazy question but i'm in Bucharest and this weekend and just realised i'll miss the final of the World Snooker Championship.
Is there any possibility that it might be on in some of the Irish pubs there maybe?
Sorry for this wild question but i'm very anxious to see it!

Train from Bucharest to Chernivtsi Posted: Tue April 29, 2008 05:37 PM UTC
Hello everyone,
I am traveling from Bucharest to Chernivtsi on May 10th (flying in from Madrid). From what I have read here and in other places, it seems that the cost is about 44 euro, however, I can't find any actual website that says that. Is there one? I have been to http://www.infofer.ro/ but can't find any information about that route. Cernauti is Chernivtsi, right?
Can I buy tickets online at all, or is the only place to do that the train station? Additionally, if I need a ticket for the next day, will I be able to get it the day before or will that be a problem? Do I need to buy the ticket in advance at all, and is it best to buy round trip right away, or buy them separately? Also, what exactly is the bedding supplement? Sorry for all the questions, however, I have not been able to find this information anywhere else.
Thank you all in advance!

In and out of Bucharest Posted: Fri April 18, 2008 02:32 AM UTC
I will be arriving in Bucharest from the Varna area of Bulgaria on 10 July; time unknown. My flight leaves on 11 July at 6:50 in the morning from Otopeni Airport.
Would it be better to stay at a hotel in the city and take a taxi or a shuttle van to the airport or to stay at an airport hotel? Most of the hotels at the airport seem fairly expensive and I've had problems in the past with the hotel shuttles at odd hours (not in Bucharest, of course).
I'm looking for the best ideas for accomplishing this, at the most cost efficient way.

Train reservations, Bucharest to Istanbul Posted: Mon April 14, 2008 04:22 PM UTC
I am finding it impossible to find a site where I can reserve a seat on the Bucharest to Istanbul Express (Istanbul Express, Bosfor Express). Anyone know how to do that online or thru a travel agency?
We plan on traveling on May 22nd, but are arriving in Bucharest earlier, on the 14th. Would that be early enough for us to make the reservation at the gare du nord?

Irish pubs in Bucharest? Any views? Posted: Fri April 11, 2008 11:04 PM UTC
Hi
I'm interested in hearing about these pubs? Are they overly expensive? Good? Do any of them attract a slightly dodgy clientelle? I can't remember where i heard it but i thought one of the 3 irish pubs in Bucharest attracted girls who were on the game. Although i have a slight feeling i'm mixing this up with an American bar who's name i can't recall... i'd be happy to be proved completely wrong on this point though! :)
Thanks

Museum in Otopeni airport? Posted: Fri April 11, 2008 03:45 PM UTC
Hello
Is there an open air display of aircraft in Otopeni airport?
If there is... is it worth a visit? Is there just civil aircraft or are there some old military eagles here too?
Thanks everyone

What's your suggestion for 2-day trip in Bucharest? Posted: Thu April 10, 2008 07:45 PM UTC
Dear ALL,
I will be in Bucharest Romania from this Sunday. I know little about this city. Could any one give me any suggestion on the trip? By the way, I have some questions.
1. What's the currency in Bucharest? Euro or Ron Lei?
2. What's the expense, in general, in pub or bar?
3. What's the most famous site around the city center?
Thank you,
cheers,

Good hostel/decently priced hotel? Posted: Thu April 10, 2008 02:08 PM UTC
Hello all
I'm more inclined to stay in the relaxed atmosphere of a hostel amongst other backpackers but i'm wondering if i have the option really in Bucharest. I've read about 10 or 12 hostels online and they all seem great until the reviews come into play.
I do want to stay in a hotel/guesthouse in Bucharest unless i have but it must be budget.
Can any of you recommend from personal experience the best run and best located hostel in Bucharest in your own opinion?
The clock is ticking and i'm keen to sort the accomodation issue asap.
I'm travelling with a friend so it doesn't have to be top notch, just more than good enough for a backpacker maybe :)
Thanks everyone

Where are the Swimming Pools (for laps) in Bucharest? Posted: Tue April 8, 2008 10:27 AM UTC
hello,
I am in Bucharest for 4 months and having a great time except I can't find a pool. I am a regular/daily swimmer and currently living close to the Piata G.Enescu/Revolutiei - can anyone tell me where is the best place to swim laps around here? Pool must be 25M min. (I can't read Romania so I'm finding the websites hard).
I went to Floreasca - but there was no water in the (outside) pool.
Also anyone have a lead on gyms that don't fortune, or yoga/spin classes in english?
Thanks!

Suggestions on places to visit near/not too far from Bucharest Posted: Tue April 8, 2008 03:24 AM UTC
Hi! We are in the early stages of planning vacation this year. Last year we visited Prague, Budapest & Vienna and had a wonderful time. This year, we tossed out the idea of Bucharest. Do you have any suggestions on how to spend a 7 days in the area? If we stayed in Bucharest for 3 days, what other cities are worth visiting for 3 or 4 days? While it would be lovely to spend more time in Prague and Budapest, the general preference is to explore a place we have never been. Is Krakow too far away by train? Maybe we should go in the other direction, like Istanbul? Though it would be nice to visit smaller cities that are "less touristy", I am concerned about not finding English speaking locals so I would prefer to stick to larger cities (which means more tourists, unfortunately). Thanks for your help!

Otopeni airport questions & military history museum Posted: Mon April 7, 2008 10:30 PM UTC
Hello all.
I'm flying into Otopeni airport in a few weeks but the flight arrives very late at night. I'm curious about when bus services to Bucharest city centre finish?
I havent been to Bucharest before so would i be better off getting a taxi?
This leads on to all the horror stories i've heard about taxi drivers outside the airport. Is it reasonable to get a taxi there?
I've also heard not to use the bureau de change in the airport no matter what.
The military museum in Bucharest. I want to visit this but there's not much to be gained from their website since i'm naturally not a Romanian speaker. I've heard they charge a 'fee per photo taken' as opposed to the more regular 'fee for taking photographs'. If this is true it could be another horror show.
I'm interested in anything else of military interest throughout the city, as long as it doesn't involve me having my camera taken away from me! :-)
Thanks in advance
DG

Bucharest Communist Architecture Posted: Mon February 25, 2008 02:22 PM UTC
Greetings,
I'm an urban photographer that is very interested in the aesthetics of the Soviet style housing block style of architecture that was erected all over Eastern Europe. So I'm am trying to decide if Bucharest or Moscow would be an appropriate place to visit to expand on a project that I am working on in New York. I am mostly interested in:
- Urban decay
- Gentrification construction projects
- Soviet style bloc suburbs (habited or uninhabited)
- New urbanism
- Industrial or manufacturing areas
- Rural towns that include any of the above between Bucharest and Odessa
- Ghost towns, that have been deserted
If you look at my website, www.douglasljungkvist.com you may get a better sense for what I am interested in. Any suggestion is appreciated, or if you know of any websites, blogs, or maps you think may be helpful.
Cheers,
Douglas
