Pittsburgh Cafe Scene & Unique Shopping!
Posted: Wed March 19, 2008 07:27 PM UTC
Will arrive Thursday and have a few days here...could you please tell me where the cool, good cafes are located? Also, what are the area(s)with the most unique, quirky stores? What are the most interesting parts of town to see? I have researched some, and the Southside seems to be the fave of locals. What are the best cafes there? Thanks...and , maybe, I'll see you sipping coffee ! (Look for me with my hula hoop, of course)

Pittsburgh Visitor on business north of Pittsburgh
Posted: Wed January 9, 2008 07:07 PM UTC
A two week stay in the 2nd half of February has me scrambling for ideas to keep from going crazy. I live on the west coast where the weather is always mild, and I'm headed for an area that typically has freezing weather this time of year, and perhaps snow. I originally had hoped to get around and see Niagara Falls on a weekend and perhaps some other places in the greater Pittsburgh area after work. But then I considered that the time of year wouldn't be all that great for long drives, and I realized I'd be facing four hotel walls for half a month. Ouch!

I'm all ears if you have suggestions/ideas of things to do, go, see, in the greater Pittsburgh area. Btw: I will actually be in Cranberry Township north of Pittsburgh. So depending on the advisability of driving during winter, that should focus the thread comments on what to expect or activities that could be done, places to visit, or good places have dinner, originating from that location.

A ton of thanks in advance!

Pittsburgh vacation close to Pittsburgh
Posted: Thu December 6, 2007 11:59 PM UTC
Hello,
I would like to travel with my significant other from Pittsburgh somewhere nice during Christmas. The problem is that we do not have a car, so we need something accessible by a train / bus / flight (in that preference order).
Our budget is something like $1000 for staying in a hotel during christmas for 2/3 nights and transporation. Can someone recommend on a good place to stay that is reachable by public transportation and is accessible by train from Pittsburgh in a reasonable amount of time?

We are lost and cannot find anything :( Any help is appreciated.

If you are going to suggest the Poccons, can you be more specific about a place? They all seem to be inaccessible without a car.

Thanks.

I've just been watching "The Kill Point" and am most intrigued by the scenery all around Pittsburgh. I'm curious to know if a VT member (or members) might be interested in holding a VT meeting sometime over the next 12 months?

Pittsburgh Moving to Pittsburgh - Where Should I Live?
Posted: Thu May 31, 2007 10:07 PM UTC
Hi All - I am a 24 year old female professional planning to move to Pittsburgh in September 2007. I'd like to get some suggestions on where to live. I'll be working downtown on Stanwix St., so want to have a relatively easy commute to work. Do young ppl live downtown? What other neighborhoods are popular with 25-35 year old crowd? I'd like to be close to some nightlife, shopping, and restaurants as well - but not necessarily in the middle of a ton of undergrads. Also, how accessible is the bus system in Pittsburgh? Any info is greatly appreciated!

Pittsburgh East Liberty still dangerous?

After reading the tips (from 2004) about bad places, is it NOT a good idea to catch a bus to and from downtown Pittsburgh, just to buy some goodies from Trader Joe's? I really like their granola, and hoped to bring some home when I go there for business in June.

Pittsburgh Moving to Pittsburgh in Fall 2007 to do a PhD from UPitt - Housing Help Needed!
Posted: Fri April 27, 2007 12:38 PM UTC
Hi everyone,

I'm a 32 year old male from Karachi, Pakistan who's gotten himself selected for the Fulbright Scholarship to do a PhD in Development Policy from the University of Pittsburgh :-)

I'm moving to the city sometime early August 2007 to start my studies and am looking for a place to live! While the best solution that I see is a temporary place (for the Fall of 2007 only, for example) and looking for a REAL place after i've settled into the city and country, I'm open to all options. Rent-wise, i'm hoping to get something in the vicinity of 600 bucks all inclusive.

Basically, I'm looking to rent a 1-bedroom apartment with a private bathroom in a safe neighbourhood close to UPitt (my dept. - GSPIA - is on Bouquet Street / R Clement Drive). Something with a well-equipped kitchen and a washer/drier in unit or on premises would be a great life-saver.

For anyone reading this: I need help in identifying safe neighbourhoods (the posts about crime rate make it sound scary!) and any housing opportunities that you can point me towards. General tips on living in Pittsburgh for somebody who's not been to the US would be greatly appreciated too!

Many thanks in advance,
Khurram

Pittsburgh New Years Eve 2006 Gala or Nice adult affair
Posted: Sat November 18, 2006 06:31 PM UTC
We are looking for a place to go in or near Pittsburgh (spanning Johnstown-Greensburgh-Butler-etc. by an hour or two)that is having a special New Years Eve ball or gala. We would prefer a charity event, but anything that requires us to dress up would be nice. First Night is nice, but we're looking for something with dancing-maybe elegant-jazz, big band, etc., an adult affair, wine. Does anything like this exist in/near Pittsburgh? If you know of a place-you may have just made our New Years--thanks in advance.

Pittsburgh Evening Activities
Posted: Wed June 14, 2006 08:04 PM UTC
I will be stopping in Pittsburgh with a group of high school age youth on Saturday, July 8. We are looking for something fun to do or see. In the past we have spent the evening at Staion Square but are looking for something less touristy. Ideally the location would include a choice of restaurants. We will also end our evening with a ride on the incline. Beautiful view of the city at night. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Pittsburgh Housing
Posted: Tue March 7, 2006 10:55 AM UTC
Hello,

I'm from Australia. I was just wondering what's the deal with housing in Pittsburgh. Why is it so low priced. I was flicking through the HUD website, and found houses offered for $20k, but in need of major repairs. Are they in dangerous slum areas, or just low income neighbourhoods. Isn't US housing supposed to be booming right now? What would be fair rent for such houses? I understand property tax is pretty high in Pittsburgh, so how much would we be talking 5% 10% ?? If anyone can help me out, that would be great.
Thanks,
Simon

Pittsburgh Moving to Pittsburgh
Posted: Sat January 14, 2006 10:34 PM UTC
I'm originally from Pa, but have been living in Omaha for the past 4 years. I'll be back there in Febuary and looking to go to school and find a part time job. Does anyone know of an good paying part time jobs? I'm also looking to go to a small college to start out with. I'll be moving to the Cranberry area. Anyone have any ideas for that? I'm willing to drive a little for the job, but not the school. Where are the hot spots to hang out and meet new people?

Pittsburgh Duquesne Incline
Posted: Wed January 11, 2006 10:03 AM UTC
Quick question (for a book I'm researching):

What is the seating arrangement inside the Incline train cars? I mean, are they in rows -- like a bus -- or just around the perimeter of the car (like the trains @ the airport)?

Thanks!

Peace,

Pittsburgh Moving to Pittsburgh - Some Questions
Posted: Sat December 31, 2005 12:29 AM UTC
My mom is thinking about moving from Washington DC to Pittsburgh and has the following questions about Pittsburgh. Could you please reply to her at bdainov8(at)cox(dot)net or I can pass feedback to her?

I see that homes can be bought for a song - and wonder if it is because of the neighborhood - or if it is just because the economy is depressed there?

Is city living a good thing there, or not? What towns/areas nearby would you recommend for someone looking for some land (5 - 10 acres)?

would you recommend it or not for a family with kids? for example - I dont consider the metro-DC area to be family friendly (too much hustle and bustle - not a lot of community building happening) - other places seem to have a lot of activity but still provide a 'grounded' environment to raise a family. Where do you think Pittsburgh fits in that way?

What is the social life like there?

Things to be aware of . . ? crime? pollution?

Pittsburgh Can you suggest some accomodation?
Posted: Mon August 22, 2005 06:49 PM UTC
I'm going to Pittsburgh at the end of October for a conference -- it's being held at the Wyndham Garden Hotel, University Place, and even though they are offering "conference rates", I"m still hoping to find something cheaper, but nearby. Can anyone offer any good suggestions? I will be driving to Pittsburgh, so I'll have transportation, but I still don't want to be too far away (more than about 5 miles or so) because I don't know how early/late I"ll have to be at the conference. Thanks!

Pittsburgh New Years Eve
Posted: Mon September 13, 2004 05:04 AM UTC
I am curious as to what there is to do for New Years Eve in Pittsburgh.

I am taking my girlfriend to see the Penguins play on the 31st of December and we are going to stay the night and do New Years there I think. This is all going to be a surprise as it will be her Christmas gift. Yes she loves the Penguins... weird I know.

Anyway we are about 22 and 23 years old and what to have a good time though still somewhat romantic.

If anyone has any details or can provide help it would be greatly appriciated!!!

Thanks heaps

Pittsburgh Renaisance or Sheraton in Downtown
Posted: Mon March 31, 2003 05:38 PM UTC
My husband and I are traveling to Pittsburgh for the first time next weekend and are looking for a centrally located hotel that we could go to restauarants/bars in the evening and walk back. I've been recommended these two hotels. Price not really an option, just really looking for convenience. Have heard that Sheraton may have lots of train noise???
