When you purchase a subway pass in Manhatten does it also allow you to ride the rails and busses in Staten Island?

We will be visiting New York in June and want to spend a day looking round Staten Island. Can anyone tell us the best places to see and where not to go please?.Are there places we should avoid for safety reasons? We are not into museums but love looking round different neibourhoods
Anyone know where Michaels Craft store is on the Island and how to get to it by bus from the ferry.
Thanks
Georgie

What have you enjoyed most on Staten Island? Was it the Bay Street Club scene? The historic landmarks? The Gateway Recreation Area? The parks? The restaurants?

What would you tell visitors to see/do while here?

Where would you advise them to stay?
