Hi New Yorkers,

This forum helps me so much to orientate and plan my first visit to NYC.
As i will be first time to Broadway, which shows will you recomend, i am travelling with 2 teenagers, so i will not have enough money to see more than 1,my hasitations are between Chicago, West Side Story and Jersey Boys, please advise what is appropriate for me and the teeners, we all love jazz and performance, we have read so much about the magic of Broadway
I would be happy, if we can taste the best of it,

New York City An age old question needing a bang up to date response though!
Posted: Mon March 30, 2009 07:38 PM UTC
I almost hesitate to ask but ... looking for cheap accommo in Manhattan for a single woman (42 yr) for a 4 or 5 night stay in late April or begining of May. Love the Pod Hotel but this is a bit out of my league this time with the GB pound so weak against the dollar so, can anyone recommend a decent hostel which has private rooms or affordable hotel. The reviews online are so contradictory. Main priority is it must be clean, in safe neighbourhood and preferably somewhere you can actually sleep (ie. not too noisy). Am I asking for the impossible?

Looked at the Candy Hostel on West 95th but bit put off by mixed reviews and very defensive responses from management to negative reviews. Hear Zip112 in Williamsburg is good but very booked up already.

Cheers

New York City 3 Days NYC
Posted: Tue March 24, 2009 11:42 PM UTC
Background: Me 28 (was in NY for two weeks before), Himself 32. First holiday. Only staying 3 days due to work commitments but just wanted himself to see the place, give him a taste and he will want to go back!

Flying in to newark Friday 24th April at 11.15am. Fly out Monday 7pm approx back to Shannon. Few questions.

Continental: What are they like to fly with. Whats newark like to fly in and out of? Where do i go through immigrations, Shannon or Newark? Getting in at 11.15am what time should i book transport for.

Transport: have settled on booking a car serive, probably Dial7 (recommendations?), i know i can get public transport but i just don't want to after long flight.

Staying in Grand Hyatt. Anyone any personal experience? Choose it mainly due to it being beside Grand Central. Have a brother in Queens and be getting back late one night and be handy to just get the 7 straight there and also for convenience to get around city.

Going to get the unlimited subway pass 7 day one as heard no longer a three day one and paying by day seems almost as much as the 7 day one and i will pass it on to the brother when i leave, DP can pass his along to one of the brothers friends so won't go to waste.

I reckon the New York Pass would be beneficial. Even if just see the Empire State, Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island, TOTR, Madame Tussu...(cant spell sorry), Intrepid. Also gives the chance to budget, have it paid for before going so we know our spending money is just that "spending money".

Things i want to take him to see are. Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty (not stop at statue), Battery Park, South Sea port, Brooklyn Bridge (want to walk back that at night), Financial District, Chinatown (i know most of these well just wander through), Times Square. Now i adore times square, it was the first thing i saw after getting the 87 train in and i will never forget the awe as i came up out of the subway and want him to feel that. Walk 5th Ave, St Patricks, Rockefeller TOTR, Central Park. Oh and Intrepid

How i know thats a long for three days but it may just be doable but again won't be rushing about. If just get him to see the few "main" attractions i'll be happy and i know once get there will play it a lot by "feel". Can anyone recommend anything on there that you reckon i should see (not into musicals, or museums). Basically we just wanted a weekend away together and didn't really matter where but i just love NY.

Central Park. Last time i was there i went to central park four days and i still wasn't able to find my way around it and wonder could you recommend the nicest placest must see areas in there. Also i can't work out the subway to get there, say from Grand Central!.

FOOD!
He LOVES food. Nothing like chinese or indian but loves his steak and i'd love to know if theres any place you could recommend that do nice fajitas. Went to a place in Niagra Falls when i in Canada and i'll never forgot them.

BARS.
Any good irish bars you could recommend around where we are staying, or any kind of bars that would have 80's kind of music. Only bars i know in NY are out in Woodside.

Oh and whats the weather usually like in April.

thank you so much for any help. I think i might be back with loads more questions. I'm writing all my directions and places to go and how to get there down in a book lol. Probably waste of time cause when there before just kept hopping on and off subway and walking for miles then hop on again for a while and see where it took me etc.

New York City HELP= 2 Adults- 10 Teenagers staying at Roosevelt Hotel-Where to Eat???
Posted: Sat March 21, 2009 04:03 AM UTC
I am chaperoning a group of kids who will be performing at Carnegie Hall on the 29th. We arrive on the 27th and they will spend most of their time in rehearsal or with some planned activities. When we have some free time I don't want to waste it talking about what to do or where to go.

We know we want to eat Pizza- New York style. Suggestions of someplace nearby?

We have one evening to ourselves and I found the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre which looks like a fun, inexpensive show for the kids. Do you agree?

Can we go to Chinatown safely? Everything I hear and read makes it sound a little dicey considering I have so many kids to keep an eye on. If you think its ok then can you suggest a good place to eat.

Any help as always is appreciated.

New York City New York, Niagara Falls and Florida
Posted: Wed March 18, 2009 01:00 AM UTC
G'day,

We're planning a last minute trip to New York on a tight budget. We want to see New York, Niagara Fall and Disney World in Florida, all in about 14-16 days. My questions are:

- How many days as a tourist do we need in New York just to see the tourist sights like Central Park, Statue of Liberty, Times Square etc?

- Which is the best and cheapest way to get to Niagara Falls i.e bus, fly hire car? And how many days round trip back to New York will we need for this?

- And if we did about 3-4 days at Disney World (we don't expect to see the entire theme park) is it safe to drive from New York to Florida and if so which city/town is the best to stop at over night to break the trip up

Thanks

New York City Looking for some affordable restaurants in Upper East side
Posted: Tue March 17, 2009 02:51 PM UTC
Hi:
We are visiting New York at the end of April. We will be staying in a hotel on the 62nd Street - Does anyone knows some good and affordable restaurants in this area? What about affordable atractions, things to see and do? When I see the tours that are being offered on the internet and atractions I am shocked with the level of prices? I am afraid to come back to Europe completely bankrupted!!!

Waiting for some tips.

New York City Fairfield Inn Times Square South v Holiday Inn Express 5th Ave
Posted: Fri March 13, 2009 01:51 PM UTC
I stayed in the Holiday Inn Express 5th Ave a few years ago and had a really good experience - good location, free breakfast, reasonable price, close to Times Square but quiet rooms etc. I'm going back to NY at the start of May and at the minute I have a room booked in the new Fairfield Inn Times Square South. When I originally booked, the Fairfield Inn was way cheaper than the Hol Inn but Hol Inn have now reduced their price to only $10 per night more than the Fairfield Inn. Does anyone have any experience of the Fairfield Inn? It's pretty new and I haven't had much luck finding reviews. Which one would you choose - I think the Hol Inn 5th Avenue might have a slightly nicer location, especially as I'll be with my Mum?

Thanks in advance :)

New York City New York to Niagara Falls to Toronto to New York
Posted: Thu March 12, 2009 05:44 PM UTC
Hi guys,

Me and my mate want to go to Niagara falls and then straight onto Toronto. We are on a VERY tight budget, so this is likely to be by bus. Can you guys recommend any bus company that would allow this kind of schedule. Ideally, we'd like to leave at night from NY so that we arrive at Niagara FAlls in the morning. Then we could spend the majority of the day at the falls and then bus to Toronto in the late afternoon. After staying in Toronto for a few days, we would have to bus back to NY. This seemed like a good idea to us because we can sleep on the bus and not have to waste the day travelling on the bus and would have plenty of time at the falls (we probably cannot afford to stay overnight at Niagara). I realise that this is probably asking too much, but is this plan at all possible?

Is the opposite route possible? Where we would travel straight from NY to toronto, and then visit niagara falls on the way back when going from Toronto to NY?

Thanks so much in advance. I really hope you can lend me some advice. By the way, you guys do an amazing job helping others plan their trips!

New York City Running weather in NYC?
Posted: Fri March 6, 2009 09:09 PM UTC
Hi! I am planning on coming out to New York (Manhattan) in a couple of days and was wondering if the weather there in the city is conducive to jogging? Just recreational jogging, but like around Central Park etc.

I know the weather is about 5 degrees Celcius during the days, but I wanted to hear from someone in the city, esp after the storm last week. :)

Many thanks for your help!
