Hello !
I and my friends will go to New York on 19 - 21 may. Can you please recommend me any good hotel in the area ? We look for price for one bed less than 100 USD.
I know that the hotels in Queens, Brooklyn, New Jersey and student's town are not so expensive. I will appreciate if you can send me a web site of any good hotel. So we can make a reservation in advance.
Best Regards,
Kris

We will be in NYC from June 30 to July 2. I see on the Carnegie Hall website that there are no performances booked during that time, but can one visit the Hall and tour inside it? My mom dearly wants to visit this place, and I had to disappoint her by telling her there were no scheduled performances during our visit to the Big Apple, but she still wanted to go see it. Any help?

My partner and myself fly from London to Boston on 09/12/2012.
We have a hire car booked for the 3 weeks we are there. Before we start touring New England I'd like to take my partner to New York for a few days as he has never been there.
Experia (in the UK) offer some fantastic deals for flights and hotel from Boston (around $550 total, $275 each), what I need to know is where is a good hotel location for a 4 night visit?. The search throws up endless hotels and I'd like to know where is a good location to base ourselves.
We have no one set reason for visiting (such as shopping, theaters etc), basically we want to have a look around to get a taste for the city to see if my partner would like to return on a later date for a longer visit. Obviously we would want to do the usual 'tourist' things such as see Times Square, Empire State etc.
Also would we do better to fly from Boston or drive to New York and leave the car on the outskirts of the city?
Can't wait to get there!
Thanks for any advice!!
Adrian

I need to get from Midtown to a hotel (not sure which one yet) in the Huntington/Commack vicinity on a Friday and will return to Laguardia on Sunday. Had planned to rent a car midtown and drive to the island, but wonder about the feasibility of taking the LIRR out of the city and renting a car somewhere en route or at the destination. Not sure if there are any car rental facilities adjacent to LIRR stations anywhere. Will have a teen and luggage with me.
Ideas?

My closest friend is meeting me in NYC on June 1. As she lives in the Midwest, she is anxious to spend the weekend close to a beach. I have very little experience with Long Island, western CT or the northern Jersey beaches. The two of us would be joined by one or both of her adult daughters, who enjoy a measure of nightlife. Can anyone suggest a hotel, spa, B&B or other within 90 minutes (car or train) of NYC where we might all reach nirvana? Or at least get a good night's sleep and some decent food? Thanks to all --

Hi VT-ers,
When is the cheapest time to fly to New York? I'm hoping to go sometime around my birthday in September but I don't mind going in, say, October or August if it's cheaper. I'd love to see NY and Boston in the Fall so I'd ideally like to come around this time.
Also, does the price of accomodation vary during the year or does it all stay roughly the same? I'd probably be looking at staying in hostels or, if I manage to convince some friends to come with me, in cheaper hotels.
Any other advice people may have about New York would be very appreciated too.
Thanks!
Nish

Following an earlier post in this forum and advice received (thank you all), I have decided to use the Airtrain and E line sub from Jamica to get into midtown on my arrival. I have now found out that the Airtrain is only running between Federal Circle and Jamaica after 9pm at night and as my flight arrives at 8.25 pm I may be travelling on after 9pm.
Question: has anyone experienced this and can they advise how much of a delay the substitute bus service is causing in getting from the terminals (in my case Terminal 4) to Federal Circle?
Many thanks,
Sam

Hi guys, my husband, myself & 2 teenage daughters will be visiting NYC in July for 4 days and we are planning on going up the Rockefeller building. I think it might be nice to see the view both in daylight & at night. If I book tickets for 8pm would that sound about the right time to catch the sunset? How far in advance should I book? Thanks for your help.

I will be traveling to NYC via Laguardia Airport on a Thursday(early evening)in August. I have never been to NYC and am from the small city of St. Louis, so I am clueless! I won't be meeting up with my friends until Friday around noonish. I need to meet them near The Westin in Times Square. I am trying to figure out what would be easiest and, quite frankly, cheapest. I need to stay at a Holiday Inn property because I want to use reward points. Should I stay at a Holiday Inn near Laguardia and just take the free shuttle to get there from the airport?? Or would I be better off staying at the Holiday Inn in Times Square, and what's the best way to get there from the airport? I would possibly like to do a little sight seeing on my own and I am assuming it would be better to be near Times Square for that than in Corona (Queens) where the other Holiday Inn is? Is it even safe as a younger woman to be traveling alone at night around these areas? Any and all info is greatly appreciated!! Thanks.

I will be in NYC in a few weeks & intend to meet an ex-roommate (who now lives in Connecticut) for dinner. I will be taking the PATH train to WTC. Are there any decent restaurants within walking distance of WTC, other than Les Halles? We like any type of food - California, French, Italian, Indian, Thai, etc., etc.

Hello my NYC VT friends!
Hoping to return to NYC May or June 2013, look forward to seeing some happy faces again!!!!
We would like some opinions on hotels that have the best view of Chysler Building...our favourite building in the world!!!
Price would probably mean that we could only do a one-night stay, but would love some ideas to research.
Thanks in advance!!!!

I am arriving at JFK in the mid evening and travelling alone (female). I am unsure whether to book a transfer to midtown with NYAS - - I used them once before a few years ago and they were fine but reviews online recently are mixed - or use the airtrain and subway. My questions are:
Is this line on the subway safe if I am travelling alone after 9pm and how long would the journey take all -in from JFK Terminal 2 to 53rd/Lex or thereabouts?
Price?
Many thanks, Sam

Hello there! I will be travelling with my friend to NYC for 22days in August. I have done pretty much research on tripadvisor, VT and various sites on what to do in NYC for the remaining 14 days, New Jersey gardens, Woodbury common, after spending 8 days tour package covering boston, montreal, quebec,Ottawa, Toronto, Niagara falls, washington, philadelphia.
It seems that shopping/broadways/main highlights are very well taken care of in our itinerary but we do not think that we should leave US with simple memories of shopping in NYC and the usual highlights. I am wondering if we will be bored there since we are not really into art/cathedrals etc... Is there any nice beach or other things that we can do over there? Or perhaps is there any nearby states that we can take a train/flight to rather than spending too much time within NYC?

Hi
I am staying in midtown east when I visit next mth and use to go to a super deli/grocery store
called Azure at 3rd and 51st which is sadly no longer there. Can anyone recommend a
good alternative in midtown for build your own type salads to go and similar fare?
Also, and totally unrelated, any recommendations for a good area anywherein Manhattan for lots of small independent shops and boutiques - for women's clothes (trendy/quirky), footwear, accessories, homewares, bookstores, cafes, etc. I like places like Anthropologie but was looking for an interesting area with lots of smaller shops rather than big name stores on the main drag!
Thank you

Big thanks to all that posted replies to my questions and a quick update that might help others too.
Cabs from JFK more than big enough to handle 3 adults with 3 big cases plus hand luggage
Highlights:
Accommodation: Could not fault Hampton Inn - Times Square North - Brilliant location, free breakfast, free all day tea/cofee, big rooms, staff great. Free Wi Fi - Close to Food Emporium and other food shops/wine shop opposite.
Entertainment: Dont miss Million Dollar Quartet - off Broadway and playing just around the corner from the above hotel - amazing talent and cast.
Cafe Wha Greenwich Village - well what a night we had, brilliant house band - such amazing singers and musicians and had us all up dancing - not to be missed - thank you so much for recommending this place
Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir and Service - Sunday 9.00am - Seriously not to be missed for a unique moving experience and we were welcomed so much - get there early and no issue with seating
2 days worth of shopping at Jersey Mall - daughter picked up loads of things at 1/4 of the price of the UK and Australia
If I can help anyone else drop me a line as we covered so much more that the above- Brilliant Forum & Thanks again

Hi everybody
I am really struggling to find accommodation for 4 adults for 9 nights in New York within a reasonable budget. travel dates 1 - 10 October
I am with my adult daughters and husband so we are finding it very expensive.
I have found a couple of apartments but I'm really worried about the legality of renting in New York for a short time.
My next option is bed and breakfast which might be the way to go. Ideally we want two rooms. My husband does not want to share with the girls.
Any suggestions are welcome! I am worn out from surfing the net!

We will be flying into LGA, and staying at a hotel just a couple blocks from Times Square. We have no problem wheeling our bags a few blocks, and negotiating stairs. We are somewhat frugal, so are considering taking the Q72 bus from LGA to the Junction Blvd subway station, then the #7 Subway to Times Square.
Any flaws with that plan?
Thanks.

I know this is probably a rather open ended question but my partner and I are visiting NY for the first time in June, we are only staying a few days and have already booked up day trips to DC and Niagara Falls leaving us only a couple of spare days in NYC itself.
We'd like to do a really comprehensive NYC day trip with a guide to make the most out of our limited time in the City. I'm favouring the Viator trip http://www.viator.com/updateShoppingCartItem.jspa?action=update&itemKey=39075411&code=2625MC&productId=1016&id=1010&productType=SIC&forceProductPage=true&travelDate=2012-06-20 at the moment as it includes the Rock. Can anybody suggest a better trip for about the same sort of money, would it be better to hire a private guide?
Thoughts?
PS I'm not a fan of boat rides!
