New York City Which airport?
Posted: Fri November 6, 2009 03:47 AM UTC
I have the option of flying in to JFK or Newark. My hotel is located in Manhattan on West 58th Street. Which airport would be more advisable to fly into, in terms of distance to hotel and convenience?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

New York City New York to Chicago by Train
Posted: Thu November 5, 2009 05:21 PM UTC
Hello,

I was wondering if anyone know if the train trip from New York to Chicago is good to take - it's supposed to be on a scenice route. The Train is the 'Lakeshore Limited' which goes daily.

This instead of flying..anybody know I'd really appreciate knowing. Main thing is we head West as might from Chicago hire a car and then go all the way through to Vegas. Just something different and maybe some nice stops on the way....Nice trip or rather just fly?

Many thanks!

New York City Roosevelt Island Tram
Posted: Thu November 5, 2009 04:20 PM UTC
I've only just found out about this.

Where can I get it? How do I get to it? (I am staying in Midtown).
Will it be open in March?
Is it possible to get on it and come back nearly straight away?
What is there to do on the island?

Sorry for all the questions!

Thanks

Has anybody got any suggestions what we can do the afternoon of thanksgiving?

We are watching the parade, and have booked tickets for the 5pm show of christmas spectacular - and having dinner at 8.30pm

Just not sure what to do in afternoon - what do locals do and will there be anywhere open to get a light lunch?

thanks

New York City Bon Jovi Fan - New York City to Sayreville, New Jersey
Posted: Tue November 3, 2009 04:42 PM UTC
Hi All,

As I've mentioned before I am coming over to NYC on 15th March for 5 nights - I am there for the St Patricks Day Parade and sightseeing.......

BUT I am also a big Bon Jovi fan and would like to maybe take a short trip to Sayreville, where Jon Bongiovi grew up?? Is this something that I could do? How long would it take to get there? Is there anything to do there? And how would I get around?

Any ideas?

Please advise.

Thanks

New York City Spending money/buying & bringing home clothes
Posted: Tue November 3, 2009 10:22 AM UTC
Hi guys,

I am coming over to NYC on 15th March 2010 til 20th March 2010.

I was just wondering if £1000 spending for myself would be enough.
I have already purchased my statue of Liberty tickets and I am hoping to buy the tickets for the Rockefeller Centre etc before I come over, so the £1000 will only be for my food/drink (I'm not looking to go to expensive places for that) and possibly clothes and souveneirs.

What do you think - do I need more?

Thanks in advance.

New York City New years eve
Posted: Sun November 1, 2009 06:31 AM UTC
We are two couples in our late 30's looking for somewhere to go on NYE (not outside at Times Square)for a meal and music. We are interested in top 40, rock'n'roll, blues and 80's music and italian, mexican, chinese and good ol american food. Would like somewhere that will at least show the ball dropping on TV. Have looked at Dave & Busters, Bourbon Street and fireworks at Central Park but having never been to NY before, am lost. Any helpful suggestions please.

New York City I know this has been asked time and time again - tips
Posted: Mon October 19, 2009 10:10 AM UTC
Hi guys,

I know that this has been asked time and time again but would be grateful for a definitive list of who I should be tipping and how much so I can just print off and take with me - you guys tip a lot more folk than us in the UK. Here is what I have so far:

Bartenders
wait staff
bell/busboy
chambermaid/cleaning lady/gent in room
taxi drivers

do I need to tip doormen, concierge for providing a service etc. anybody else I have missed off?

Sorry for sounding a tad dim - I know alot of wait staff rely on their tips (don't agree that they should have to and should get a decent wage but that is another issue!)

really want to get this right.

Thanks guys in advance....5 weeks to go and counting!!!!!

New York City Thanksgiving
Posted: Mon October 19, 2009 03:39 AM UTC
Howdy from Australia. NEXT year we're planning to come over the week of Thanksgiving, so
(1) we've previously stayed at the Radio City Apartments and loved the location but for 7 nights, are there better price options in the same location? Ability to do our own laundry is essential.
(2) what are the inside-scoops on watching the Parade? eg how many hours beforehand should one be waiting? (even what time does it start please?!) Preferred viewing locations? Has it ever been cancelled?
(3) I'm guessing flying out on Thanksgiving or even the day after would be frantic in the airports?
(4) Is it true there are amazing sales the day after Thanksgiving?
HUGE thanks everybody.

New York City Transportation

My wife is somewhat leary about riding subway after dark. I'm visiting New York City with her, staying in Harlem, and I'm driving. What is general cost of taxi from 138th Street to Theater District? Also given wife's squeamishness about after dark subway, is there a place I could drive to park reasonably and then catch a taxi to Theater District or the Village? What do you guys suggest for this situation?

New York City New York City to Atlantic City
Posted: Wed October 14, 2009 10:58 PM UTC
Hi All,

We are coming to New York in December and have trips etc booked.

We are staying for 7 days and was in NYC 2 years ago, it`s a great place. This time we are looking at leaving the New York area and going to Atlantic City for a day.

Having looked up the best way to travel their on the Internet their is a train, but car hire seems the cheaper way. £34 plus taxes etc for a day hire. It`s around 2.5h drive each way...I think.

Does anyone recomend doing this or should we just stay in New York City?

Thanks alot,

Keith

New York City tickets for Phantom - thanksgiving week
Posted: Mon October 12, 2009 03:01 PM UTC
Hi guys - wanted your opinions please!

We have (finally!) decided we want to go and see Phantom of the Opera whilst in New York......how busy will the theatres be thanksgiving week, which is when we visit (from 23rd Nov) (as I understand many folk take holidays this week)

I cannot decide whether to book tickets now which is working out at £163 for us both or see if Broadway.box extends the offer on Phantom (currently half price tickets until end of October!) - so more money in the kitty for other things.

Do you think it is likely the price offer will be extended or should we book now? (I was thinking of TKTS but want good seats and don't want to really waste time queueing)

Thanks in advance,

Clare
