Krakow Toilet business
Posted: Mon May 12, 2008 11:53 PM UTC
I have read several tips about having change for using toilets in Krakow - I need to get a bit more specific ...

If I go to Wawel Castle - are there bathrooms easy to find? Sometimes I could be a bit more of a frequent flyer in the morning and need to know the scoop.

Any other tips on locating bathrooms and the type of change needed welcome!

Krakow Krakow airport to center of town (Powisle)
Posted: Mon May 12, 2008 02:29 AM UTC
I thought I had posted but cannot find the info. I have been looking thru the VT pages as well as http://www.krakow-info.com/airport.htm, and getting from the airport to Powisle Street:

The website above states "A single ticket costs an equivalent of under two euros. One can can purchase tickets on the train. It departs from a stop some 300 meters from the International Terminal T1 "

(1) is it pretty obvious to figure out where this train is?

(2) *** Is the station and train OK for a woman alone to hang out in, or would it be just better to take a taxi?

(3) Assuming I do take the train to Glowny Stacja PKP ... it looks like it will be around (give/take) 4 kilometers from my destination. Is it easy to catch a taxi from the Glowny Station?

Thanks!

Zakopane What time is the first cable car to Kasprowy Wierch? (Early July)
Posted: Sun May 11, 2008 09:09 PM UTC
Hello everyone,

I am planning to visit Zakopane for the third time in early July. My friend and I are cycling from Prague down to Austria and the Danube, through Vienna and Bratislava, into Hungary and up then up through the lower Slovakian Tatras.

When we get to Poland we would like to climb Rysy and also to traverse the Eagle Ridge (Orla Perc). I have done both but my friend is looking forward to the experience.

What we plan to do is to cycle from Slovakia to Morskie Oko, stay overnight in the mountain hut, climb Rysy and then cycle to Zakopane to spend the night there.

The following morning we would like to get an early start and catch the first cable car of the day. Does anyone know what time that will be? (Early July) Can anyone please give me a rough time to complete the ridge and descend back to Zakopane from Wlk. Woloszyn via Gasienicowa and Dolina Jaworzynka?

Alternatively we could cycle from Slovakia straight to Zakopane, stay the night, catch the cable car up to do the Eagle Ridge and then spend the night at Morskie Oko. Climb Rysy the next day and either walk back to Zakopane or use public transport from Morskie Oko.

Will the Mountain Hut at Morskie Oko be busy in early July? When are the Polish school holidays?

Can anyone recommend accommodation in Zakopane?

Any advise on our itinerary will be most welcome.

Thank you in advance

Regards
Coddy.

Krakow Gluten free eating
Posted: Wed May 7, 2008 12:23 PM UTC
We are visiting Krakow for 4 nights in July. My husband has a food allergy so is on a gluten free diet which means he can't eat anything containing wheat flour so no bread, pasta, pizza, cakes etc etc.It also means he can't eat sauces that are thickened with flour ( cornflour, rice flour are ok). Can anyone advise of places to eat which would be ok for him. He can eat any meat, fish, veg etc.

Swinoujscie Why are there no tourists allowed on the main ferry?
Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 11:00 AM UTC
When Poland joined the Schengen area, the border between the German and the Polish part of the island of Usedom was opened for traffic, making travelling there much easier. We had planned to go to the Bison park and the Museum of Nature, then on to Kamien Pomorski, had got some Zloty, a good map of Swinoujscie and left early. It was easy to follow the signs towards the ferry, but when it was our turn,a young employee walked up to us and told us we couldn't take the ferry. I quote: "You cannot take this ship,it is for people from this city only".
So we went back to the German part of the island and saw the bisons in the much smaller park there.

Is this ferry off-limits for tourist all the time? Or was it because we were early and it was still rush hour for the many commuters? We didn't see any signs except the main ones, leading us to the ferry.
Does anybody know?

Poland What gifts to bring?
Posted: Sun May 4, 2008 08:12 PM UTC
Hi
I am taking my family to Poland for 2 weeks in June. I am the only one who speaks Polish, and we will be visiting with family between our tour. I have a few elderly relatives and the rest are between 40-55. Coming from the US, and specifically Florida, can anyone recomment some appropriate gifts to bring that would not be too fragile or heavy? Thanks

Krakow Accommodation Outside Central Krakow
Posted: Fri May 2, 2008 10:27 PM UTC
Hi. I wonder if anyone could recommend any reasonable hotels (or apartments) on the outskirts of Krakow or even in a town close to Krakow.

We'll be travelling to Krakow by car, and do not wish to take it into central Krakow. Ideally we are looking for a hotel that is about 20 - 30 minutes from central Krakow.

I'm probably asking for too much, but it would be good if the hotel/apartment was in walking distance (10 minutes or so) of a bus/tram stop or station and in a safe area.

Many thanks

Poland On Compulsory Reservations and Discounted Fares
Posted: Tue April 29, 2008 09:47 PM UTC
I asked this question in the Czech Republic Forum and got no response, so I thought I'd try here...

My wife and I want to take the early morning EuroCity from Krakow to Prague. I've been told it's the best value only to buy a ticket to the Polish-Czech border, then buy a ticket from there to Prague (in the Czech Republic, the companion ticket is 1/2 price). But on the particular train we want to take, reservations are compulsory for the entire trip (including the Czech portion).

My question: is it possible to reserve seats for the whole trip while buying fare just to the border, then buying the discounted ticket from the conductor in the Czech Republic? Thanks for your help!

Poland Duszniki Zdroj advice about it, and how to get there from Sweden
Posted: Sun April 27, 2008 09:14 PM UTC
Thanks all for helping out on other questions. Have just found relatives there, and want to visit. I speak only English so it will be difficult.
We are a middle aged couple and want to drive there from Stockholm. Any advice on the route would be great. We will have to stay in hotels or a hostel. Any leads would be great. Also thought I might try a dentist there too since just broke a filling...any horror stories?

Also, is this the only name this place goes by? Do they call it something else as I don't see much about it. What is it like...what should we expect? We also thought about going to Krakow...wonder how close it is in hours.

Absolutely any advice will be much appreciated as we should be leaving in the next few days...Thanks.

Katowice Kotowice or Krakow
Posted: Thu April 24, 2008 10:43 AM UTC
My wife and I are traveling to Katowice airport then going to Zakopane. due to timings we are getting a taxi from the airport direct to Zakopane however this is expensive.Considering on our return that we should either stay for one night in Krakow or Katowice before catching 12.30Pm flight home to Glasgow. We have visited Krakow on three occassions and enjoyed it . Wondering if we should get all the travel out the way at the one time and go direct from Zakopane to Katowice. Is this possible and if so what is the best way to do it and how long would this take. Is Katowice a nice place to stay just for the one day.Is it easy to get from the town to the airport in the morning. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Katowice Katowice Train Station.
Posted: Tue April 22, 2008 06:07 PM UTC
Hi there,

Im going to Katowice very breifly in July, we're landing then pretty much getting the train directly to Novi Sad, Serbia (over night)... Our plane lands at 21:00, and the train leaves at 23:50.

First question - Would we be able to easly get a taxi from the airport directly to the train station at that time?

Secondly - I've heard a few negative things regarding the Katowice train station. Apparently it's over-run with homeless people, especially at night!!.. And ive read that they could get violent... i'd just like to know how bad it REALLY is?.. Would a group of 7 british tourists be safe enough on the train station at that sort of time? or should we SERIOUSLY consider a different option?

Thanks for any information and advice.

Krakow bus or train to krakow from Katowice
Posted: Mon April 21, 2008 04:50 PM UTC
Hello,
15 June (sunday) i arrive at Katowice at 17.30. I can take the bus (from wizz air) to Krakow and it will take me there in 2 hours. Is there a faster possibility (and cheap!) I was thinking about taking the train. Is there a train leaving from Katowice airport to Krakow, or do i have to go to the trainstation first?
What would you recommend me to do, take the (mini)bus, train or the normal bus (What is the fastest and cheapest way to do)?
We booked a hostel, close to the trainstation in Kakow.

And then we like to go out to a disco at Krakow. What is a good place to go (i don't want to go to a disco where all English or foreign people come). Where do the Krakow people go out?

Thanks a lot,

Warsaw Is Warsaw worth a visit
Posted: Mon April 21, 2008 11:35 AM UTC
We are looking to incorporate Poland into a 2 month trip to Europe. I have to say I am getting a bit spooked by all the warnings in regard to safety in Warsaw. Would it be better to skip Warsaw and spend the time in Krakow and the Tatra Mtns? Would we be missing out by not going to Warsaw? Also are there any other towns we could include - looking for a week in total in Poland. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Krakow best time to visit May or November
Posted: Mon April 21, 2008 10:13 AM UTC
I need some suggestions...would it be better to go to Krakow at the end of May or the end of November? I would like to see the Krakow area sights, Auschwitz, salt mine, ect... Is everything open in November? I don't mind if the weather is cold if it means less crowds. Also, any ideas for things to do for me (I'll be staying for four days).
Thanks!
