Baltimore Questions about BWI Amtrak Station
Posted: Wed October 31, 2007 09:58 PM UTC
What is the best way to reach the Amtrak station and avoid heavy traffic if coming from Parkville?

Also, can anyone tell me where the Quicktrak ticket kiosks and outbound tracks are?

If my train is at 3, how soon do I need to arrive?

Baltimore What is quickest way to BWI from DC on day before Thanksgiving?
Posted: Sat September 29, 2007 07:48 PM UTC
On the day before Thanksgiving, I need to get from DC (Georgetown) to BWI to take a Southwest airlines flight to Manchester, NH, then travel to Boston. My choices are train, then bus shuttle to the Terminal, or bus from DC. It's one of the busiest travel days, so I'm worried about packed highways. Since the airport will be so busy, I think I should allow 2 hrs to get through security lines at the airport itself rather than the airline-recommended 1 1/2 hrs. I don't know how much time to allow myself to get from DC's Union Station to the airport on that busy day. Would it be better to get a flight from IAD (Dulles) to Boston?

Baltimore Commutes from Baltimore
Posted: Wed September 26, 2007 12:41 AM UTC
Hi, my partner and I are moving to Baltimore. We currently live/work in Philly and DC, and for at least the next couple of years will be sticking with our jobs. So, we're both trying to find the best mix of quick, yet economical commuting routes. We know we'll use the MARC for the DC commute, but it's the Philly one that's difficult...it looks like most of the older posts recommend Amtrak, but that has skyrocketed from $500 to $944 since those last posts! Any other suggestions? Even if you know an easy way to get to the Wilmington Septa station, that might be helpful...we can take the Regional Rail from there!

Thanks!

Baltimore BWI to DC...?
Posted: Mon September 24, 2007 03:32 AM UTC
Im into BWI in the next few weeks and wondering if it is faster and or cheaper to use MARC than using the BWI Express bus to the Greenbelt Metro station...Im guessing that MARC would be faster and more direct than using bus and then Metro...
Would anybody have any suggestions please...?

Baltimore Using MARC Trains - Getting to DC
Posted: Sun July 15, 2007 08:13 PM UTC
I was looking at a day (week day) trip from Baltimore to Wash. DC. I see that there are 2 MARC train lines. The Penn Station one seems to have more times. However, the Camden Line schedule says it stops at Washington Union Station whereas the Penn Line stop simply says Washington? Does anyone know for sure if that's Union Station too or where the Penn Line does stop in Washington? Also, how easy is it to find your way around Union Station? Are there signs to follow to get to where they sell the MARC tickets and signs that are easy to follow to find the MARC trains from there?

Baltimore Help On Moderate Restaurants
Posted: Mon July 9, 2007 06:42 PM UTC
I am going to be staying in Baltimore (Inner-Harbor, Pier 5 hotel) the first week in August, with my wife and 2 kids. In other forums, I have seen others writing that the Inner-Harbor restaurants are all expensive and everything is ala cart.

I am looking for any suggestions and/or links to family friendly or moderately priced restaurants in the area.

Baltimore 4th of July Fireworks
Posted: Sat June 30, 2007 08:52 PM UTC
Hi all. I recently moved to Baltimore. I love the city, and have found many of your B'more pages really helpful in exploring my new home.

I live in Federal Hill, so I'm in a great spot to catch the fireworks this 4th of July. My mother will be visiting, so I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for a good spot? I don't think she'll be able to handle the crowds of Federal Hill or the harbor. I seem to recall a suggestion for a little-known rooftop restaurant that had a great fireworks view from a few years ago. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Baltimore Parking costs
Posted: Mon May 7, 2007 01:27 PM UTC
Hi, everyone!

I was wondering if anyone could tell me about the parking costs at Penn Station. I've found a garage nearby, but the webpage didn't have a price listed for a daily rate, or a monthly rate. Are there garages nearby that do early bird specials?

Thanks so much for your help!

Baltimore Commuting to Johns Hopkins hospital from Bethesda
Posted: Mon April 23, 2007 03:51 AM UTC
I'll be commuting to Johns Hopkins Hospital from Bethesda for the next year (one year only). I'll need to be there by 7:30a-8a (get on the road between 6:30a-7a) and I will be leaving from between 5p-6:30p. It won't be a fun commute, but I'd like to minimize the pain for a year. The other caveat is that my wife needs to be within walking distance of the metro. The two areas my wife and I are considering living in are:

1) Grovesnor area of North Bethesda: I'll have easy access to 495 and my wife will be able to walk to the metro.
2) Downtown Bethesda: My wife will still be able to walk to the metro. However, I'll have a little more difficulty getting onto 495. The best option would seem to be head onto the East-Side Highway and then head north on Connecticut Ave to 495.

I'm wondering if anyone has insight into the commute overall from Bethesda during those hours, and the commute from Downtown Bethesda to 495. I'm worried that the latter will be troublesome, however we would prefer to live in downtown Bethesda for its amenities.

Thanks in advance.

Baltimore Commuting from Downtown Baltimore to NW Washington DC
Posted: Thu March 29, 2007 05:12 AM UTC
I am about to move to downtown Baltimore with my husband (who will work in Baltimore) and am trying to decide if I should keep my current job in NW Washington DC. I looked into the Marc train, but the school I work at is 1.7 miles from the closest metro station. There is a Metro bus that would get me there, but that seems like it would take so long- marc train to union station, to metro stop, to a bus stop. I'm thinking about driving and trying to avoid peak rush hour times. Has anyone done this commute? any advice for me? Am I crazy for doing it? what are the best times to avoid traffic in the morning and afternoon? Thanks for any help!

Baltimore Travel advice needed
Posted: Sat March 3, 2007 01:56 AM UTC
I am planning a trip to Camden Yards this summer. Can you suggest a good place to stay outside of the city that would allow us to take a train to the ballpark? What towns would be good choices, and what train would we need to take to get to the inner harbor and the ballgame? The hotels near the stadium are booked/and or too expensive!
Thanks!

*Flea Market (suggested by Ellen)
*Baseball Legends/Babe Ruth Birthplace
*American Visionary Art Museum
*...and catch up with Frank's walking tour before the Crabfest

I am staying at the Tremont Park Hotel. Can someone suggest transportation to each of these places?

Thanks, and see you Friday!!

Baltimore if you somehow missed signing up for Baltoberfest....
Posted: Mon August 28, 2006 03:30 PM UTC
...and still want to attend, this is a copy of the email that went out to all those on the 'guestlist.' [also, cross posted in the misc forum]

If you've already RSVPed for Baltoberfest, thank you! If you haven't, think of
this as a gentle reminder that we'd like your responses by Friday, Sept. 1. The
info we need for your responses is on Baltoberfest's homepage.

In addition to the "official" Baltoberfest activities, there are some others to
consider:

Friday, 4pm: Happy Hour at the Brewer's Art, http://www.belgianbeer.com/.
Please note: This is in the Mt Vernon neighborhood; while no "official"
Baltoberfest activities take place here, this is a not to be missed area of the
city. Mt Vernon Place is quite possibly the most beautiful square in the US.
(A taxi from this neighborhood to Patterson Bowl should be under $10.)

Sunday, 4pm: Ringing out Baltoberfest in true Barvarian Biergarten style at
Blob's Park. http://www.blobspark.com.

Also, please be aware that the Baltoberfest site is updated, well, occasionally,
and we've made sure to include answers to the more obvious questions you may
have (i.e. approximate cab fare from BWI airport to downtown, etc.). You can
also find the locations of all the events. Should you still have questions, we
will, of course, be happy to try to answer them! (Also, you should probably
expect another email or two from us before the 15th.)

Look forward to seeing you all in less than three weeks!

Baltimore Baltoberfest: RSVPs
Posted: Tue August 8, 2006 06:02 PM UTC
We're beginning collecting RSVPs for Baltoberfest, the big VT meeting to be held beginning September 15. Please check out the Baltoberfest member site, or the meetings and events board for that date.

Of course, feel free to contact any of your hosts should you have any questions.

Also, please note that while we all like pleasant surprises, should you just decide to arrive without RSVPing, we cannot promise to accomodate you for any of the events. That said, hope to see you all in Baltimore!

Baltimore Morning Commute From DC to Baltimore

Question: What is the morning traffic like on the reverse commute, from DC to Baltimore? Any approximiations of how long it takes from NW DC to Downtown Baltimore?

I need to do this for just a few days, and determine if I should just take the train (which is about 1.5 hrs from where I live).

Thanks!

Hi All

I've been in this area for a few years but haven't really done too much touristy stuff. My parents are coming to visit in Oct from South Africa and we will spend about a week around Baltimore.

What would be your Top 5 Must see or do things in the Baltimore area? Day trips or just places I must take them to get a real feel for Baltimore.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice. I will have more questions and a need for aproval once we work out their schedule better. They will hopefully finalise their tickets this week.

Baltimore CanI lock my backpack @ Penn Station while I hang around Baltimore for the day?
Posted: Wed July 12, 2006 03:09 PM UTC
Heyo, I have travel plans to come to Baltimore from Washington DC in the morning, and will be taking the greyhound or train to NYC in the evening. Hence I have kind of a full day to explore Baltimore and to check out Peabody Institute (which is one big reason why i'm going to Baltimore!).

Questions (hope someone can help me)
1) Can I lock my backpack at the Penn Station (using MARC from Washington DC) for the day and collect it in the evening? If not, any other options?

2) What's the economical way to go to NYC from Baltimore? Should I take greyhound or take a train(which train)? Does the cost differ a lot?

Baltimore downtown evening
Posted: Fri July 7, 2006 12:19 AM UTC
A few questions about spending an evening downtown--hopefully you all can help!

1) Where in the harbor would be the best place to grab a bite to eat, and avoid the crowds from restaurant week? We aren't looking for a $60 meal that night, but would like something casual but nice. Is that possible?

2) Where are the best places to park?

3) We were planning to go from the harbor to the ballgame that night. What's the best way to get to camden yards from the harbor?

So embarrassing that I'm from Baltimore myself and can't answer any of my own questions!
