Baltimore if you somehow missed signing up for Baltoberfest....
Posted: Mon August 28, 2006 02:30 PM UTC
...and still want to attend, this is a copy of the email that went out to all those on the 'guestlist.' [also, cross posted in the misc forum]

If you've already RSVPed for Baltoberfest, thank you! If you haven't, think of
this as a gentle reminder that we'd like your responses by Friday, Sept. 1. The
info we need for your responses is on Baltoberfest's homepage.

In addition to the "official" Baltoberfest activities, there are some others to
consider:

Friday, 4pm: Happy Hour at the Brewer's Art, http://www.belgianbeer.com/.
Please note: This is in the Mt Vernon neighborhood; while no "official"
Baltoberfest activities take place here, this is a not to be missed area of the
city. Mt Vernon Place is quite possibly the most beautiful square in the US.
(A taxi from this neighborhood to Patterson Bowl should be under $10.)

Sunday, 4pm: Ringing out Baltoberfest in true Barvarian Biergarten style at
Blob's Park. http://www.blobspark.com.

Also, please be aware that the Baltoberfest site is updated, well, occasionally,
and we've made sure to include answers to the more obvious questions you may
have (i.e. approximate cab fare from BWI airport to downtown, etc.). You can
also find the locations of all the events. Should you still have questions, we
will, of course, be happy to try to answer them! (Also, you should probably
expect another email or two from us before the 15th.)

Look forward to seeing you all in less than three weeks!

Baltimore My First VT Meeting: Baltoberfest
Posted: Fri August 25, 2006 08:26 PM UTC
Okay, I'm not ashamed to admit that I am a little fearful of attending this huge meeting, as it is my first VT meeting ever! So, is there anything I should know about meetings in general? Anyone I should stay away from? (just kidding!)

I am trying to find out where to buy the Phillip's Crab Cakes. I saw a show on the food channel that said they ship them across the country. I would like a location to buy them close to Flint, Michigan.

Baltimore Baltoberfest: RSVPs
Posted: Tue August 8, 2006 05:02 PM UTC
We're beginning collecting RSVPs for Baltoberfest, the big VT meeting to be held beginning September 15. Please check out the Baltoberfest member site, or the meetings and events board for that date.

Of course, feel free to contact any of your hosts should you have any questions.

Also, please note that while we all like pleasant surprises, should you just decide to arrive without RSVPing, we cannot promise to accomodate you for any of the events. That said, hope to see you all in Baltimore!

Baltimore Morning Commute From DC to Baltimore
Posted: Wed July 26, 2006 02:17 PM UTC
Question: What is the morning traffic like on the reverse commute, from DC to Baltimore? Any approximiations of how long it takes from NW DC to Downtown Baltimore?

I need to do this for just a few days, and determine if I should just take the train (which is about 1.5 hrs from where I live).

Thanks!

Baltimore Top 5 Must sees for Foreigners? Locals Please recommend.
Posted: Thu July 20, 2006 03:09 AM UTC
Hi All

I've been in this area for a few years but haven't really done too much touristy stuff. My parents are coming to visit in Oct from South Africa and we will spend about a week around Baltimore.

What would be your Top 5 Must see or do things in the Baltimore area? Day trips or just places I must take them to get a real feel for Baltimore.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice. I will have more questions and a need for aproval once we work out their schedule better. They will hopefully finalise their tickets this week.

Baltimore CanI lock my backpack @ Penn Station while I hang around Baltimore for the day?
Posted: Wed July 12, 2006 02:09 PM UTC
Heyo, I have travel plans to come to Baltimore from Washington DC in the morning, and will be taking the greyhound or train to NYC in the evening. Hence I have kind of a full day to explore Baltimore and to check out Peabody Institute (which is one big reason why i'm going to Baltimore!).

Questions (hope someone can help me)
1) Can I lock my backpack at the Penn Station (using MARC from Washington DC) for the day and collect it in the evening? If not, any other options?

2) What's the economical way to go to NYC from Baltimore? Should I take greyhound or take a train(which train)? Does the cost differ a lot?

Baltimore downtown evening
Posted: Thu July 6, 2006 11:19 PM UTC
A few questions about spending an evening downtown--hopefully you all can help!

1) Where in the harbor would be the best place to grab a bite to eat, and avoid the crowds from restaurant week? We aren't looking for a $60 meal that night, but would like something casual but nice. Is that possible?

2) Where are the best places to park?

3) We were planning to go from the harbor to the ballgame that night. What's the best way to get to camden yards from the harbor?

So embarrassing that I'm from Baltimore myself and can't answer any of my own questions!

Sportsfans!

If you're in the area, I'll be getting group tickets soon for this game, a big VT outing on the eve of the even bigger VT meeting, Baltoberfest, which begins 'offically' the next evening.

The game is at 7:05 pm at Camden Yards.

Please drop me an email if you're interested, and I'll fill you in on all the details!

Baltimore Commute from Baltimore to DC and Baltimore to Wilmington
Posted: Fri June 9, 2006 06:45 PM UTC
Is living near Baltimore and commuting to Wilmington and DC do-able? My boyfriend was recently offered a job in DC at the NRL and I am considering transfering to Wilmington. If we live near Baltimore, will it be a horrible commute for the both of us? Also, where is a reasonable place to live near Baltimore?

Baltimore Baltoberfest (VT meeting) update
Posted: Thu June 1, 2006 02:43 PM UTC
[Please note, this is cross posted in the misc forum, and also emailed to all those who have signed up for Baltoberfest]

Again, if people are interested, we will do a group outing to see the Orioles
play the Red Sox on Thursday, Sept. 14. If we have enough people, we can get go
through group ticket sales, and get a discount (and other fun little
things....that will remain a big surprise!)

So far, there are plenty of tickets left, but the later we get in the season,
the harder it will be to get good seats.

Please send a message to Baltoberfest if you're planning on attending this game.
Given the mercurial nature of people actually showing up to VT meetings, we will
work out advance payment. (Most likely a check, drawn on a US bank, sent to
me~~Ellen. Should you be outside of the US, we'll work out something....)

We know that many people haven't yet made their arrangements for
Baltobefest....BUT, we'd like to get an idea if group sales even makes sense.
Please reply by June 15...which will give us plenty of time to make arrangments
for payment, etc.

And, a note of seating and pricing: Right now, thinking of upper reserve, 3rd
base side. I'll put a photo of the view of the field from this section on this
site....the ticket prices should be in the $20 range, before discount, and most
likely, no more than $15.

If you want more information on the Os, the stadium, etc. check out,
www.theorioles.com, or, as always, email us.

That's it for now.
Talk to you again soon, and see you in Baltimore, hon,

Baltimore Baltimore VT meeting--September 15
Posted: Wed May 24, 2006 09:33 PM UTC
[This email has been sent to all those who have signed up for Baltoberfest. I'm posting it here, and have posted this in the misc forum for those interested, but not yet signed up.]

Greetings from Baltimore, now with the official slogan, 'get in on it!"

Larry, Frank, and I (Ellen) have been fielding various questions regarding hotels. We have a few suggestions:

--Our intrepid travel helper, Hexepatty, has been making calls to try to secure group rates. It has not been an easy task, and we thank her. What she has learned is that the very same weekend of Baltoberfest, sees the opening home game of the Baltimore Ravens (American football team). Therefore, rates are high, and increasing. In addition, rates in central Baltimore are not inexpensive even when the Ravens aren't playing. Our suggestions: try to book a room ASAP.....and, think about possibly rooming with someone.

--Hexepatty was able to negotiate with one hotel, in a good location, for a pretty good rate. ($118 including taxes.) She needs at least 10 people to secure this rate. Should you be interested, please contact her.

--Many people want to combine a trip to Baltoberfest, with a trip to ournationscapital. Hotels in DC are more expensive than they are in Baltimore. We would suggest trying to get a chain hotel in the BWI airport area. That way, you could take the MARC commuter train (during the week) or Amtrak (on the weekend) south, to Washington; and, take the light rail north into Baltimore.

A note about the weekend:

--on Thursday, Sept. 14, the Baltimore Orioles will be playing the Boston Red Sox. If people are interested in attending this game, we will get tickets, although we will need payment first. When the Sox comes to town, Camden Yards turns into Fenwick South, and the game should have a near sell-out crowd. We would like to get tickets early, but, at this point, we would like to gauge interest. Please let us know if this sounds good to you!

We will be providing updates, along with maps, and all the additional fun things we have planned (including a little 'competition' among your hosts). Please stay tuned.

And, of course, feel free to contact us via this email or any one of us individually.

Until next time....your Baltoberfest Hosts

Baltimore Moving to Baltimore
Posted: Mon April 10, 2006 08:42 PM UTC
It looks like my fiance and I will be moving to the Baltimore area for work reasons. Her family lives near Harrisburg, PA and we are looking to live just outside the actual city either near I-83 or in the Owings Mills area. I would appreciate any town/community recommendations anyone can provide. Also, is the metro subway from Owings Mills to downtown safe? We don't want to live right in the city (been there, done that) and would like to live more outside but still be able to get in for work.

Thanks!

Baltimore Baltimore to Annapolis public transportation
Posted: Sun April 9, 2006 11:02 AM UTC
I'd like to go from Baltimore to Annapolis for a day trip using public transportation. Would I have to go to BWI and take a bus? Or, is there a bus I can take from Downtown? Municipal websites are very confusing.

Also, how long would it take to get there? I'm debating whether or not to rent a car. I understand parking is hard to come by in Annapolis and therefore would prefer public transportation.

thanks.

Baltimore Dragon Boats?
Posted: Sun December 18, 2005 11:49 PM UTC
A friend of mine had a picture from the Maryland area (I think from Baltimore) of this park with boats that visitors could rent to explore the area. The boats were shaped like traditional Chinese dragons. Does anyone out there have any more information about where this area is actually located and about these boats? I'm doing research for a novel that I'm currently writing that is set in Baltimore.

Thanks in advance for your help.
