| Boston | USS Constitution's Cannons Posted: Sun May 4, 2008 08:57 PM UTC
Where were the original cannons for the U.S.S. Constitution made? I live in the northwest corner of Connecticut and have heard it said that this ship's cannons were manufactured in Salisbury, CT. I have also heard that the town's name can still be found prominantly labeled on the cannons today. Is this true?

| Boston | Best way to get from Boston to NYC Posted: Sat May 3, 2008 02:58 PM UTC
Hi,
I'm going to Boston for work from 7th to 14th June. Pity I didn't get confirmation earlier or I could have got some Red Sox tickets... anyway, I decided to stay in NYC until the 19th and fly back from JFK. What's the best way to get to NYC on public transport? |

| Boston | 2 Adults + 3 kids = True Suite Hotel? Posted: Tue April 29, 2008 07:11 PM UTC
Going to be in Boston for 3 nights in July. We are 2 adults and 3 kids (2 x 13 year olds and a 9 year old). Going to do most of the tourist stuff so downtown is good, but we could also go out to the "burbs" provided there is direct mass transit. In some of the cities that we have traveled to we have been fortunate to find a true "suite" hotel - meaning 2 separate bedrooms with a common living room area with pull out couch. That works really well for us. Typically this arrangement is less money than getting 2 adjacent hotel rooms. Anyone have any recommendations?

| Boston | Three Weeknights in Boston Posted: Tue April 15, 2008 05:04 PM UTC
Hi--
I'm heading to Boston in late April (28th, 29th, and 30th) for just 3 nights. I'll have work to do during the day, but it would be nice to get out for some fun in the evenings. I guess I'd be focused on food, some decent bars for the 30s age set, that kind of thing. I'm staying near Logan at the Seaport, which is near the Trade Center from what I can gather on the map. Anyone have ideas or suggestions for good places to go? Thanks a million! TC |

| Boston | Places to stay/Areas to avoid/29.99 Hotel Posted: Tue April 15, 2008 04:19 AM UTC
Hi there,
I'm gonna be in Boston in two days and am looking for a place to stay (I decided today that now was the time to visit that friend I'd told many times I'd visit). I've a found a few options on Craig's List - I don't mind a shared bathroom but I want a private room. The cheapest I found was $50/night. Any suggestions of websites I should also check out for cheap accommodation would be welcome. Any particular areas I should avoid? So far, what I've found would be either in Somerville (Davis station) or near Bowdoin station. I assume these are safe areas, correct? Also, has anyone ever heard about the 29.99 Hotel on Everett Street (near the airport)? I found a couple of websites with good reviews, but nothing else. $30 a night is pretty cheap, but I'm also wondering about the area. And the fact that it's not widely advertised. Thanks. |

| Boston | The T Posted: Sat March 22, 2008 11:57 PM UTC
I need to get from Stonehill College which is Easton MA to basically downtown Boston. Is there public transportation in Easton? Should I ride the commuter train into a town on the outskirts of the city. I have a car, but I don't really like driving in huge cities.
I guess my question is this: how far around Boston does the public transportation go? |

| Boston | How's the weather? Posted: Sat March 22, 2008 06:05 AM UTC
Hi Alan and everyone!
We are definitely getting excited...we leave on Tuesday. Needless to say, my house is a disaster area with suitcases and piles of clothes everywhere! I need to say thank you to all of you who have answered all of my (sometimes "silly") questions about weather, clothes, shopping... I posted to another website that my friend recommended and some of the people on the other board were not very nice and posted rude insults (although some were helpful also). So thank you! According to the forecast, it seems colder than expected. Is it in the 30s? BRRRRR! I'm scared! :) You know what happened to my friend that's traveling with me? She tried on her layers just to see what it would feel like and the coat she bought couldn't close. She leaves tomorrow and is just so upset. She gets there on Easter Sunday and can't find anywhere that's open that she can pick up another coat (all the stores here only have Spring and Summer clothes). thanks again and please keep me up to date on the weather in the next few days. kali |

| Boston | Boston Accomodation Posted: Thu March 20, 2008 11:38 PM UTC
On my trip to the States I'm dropping in on Boston first (Boston-NYC-Chicago-San Francisco-Las Vegas)
It is proving THE most difficult location to find a hotel which suits my needs. Key to it all is location, I won't be driving so I'll be relying on Public Transport and walking around sightseeing. The hotel has to have an internet connection available - preferably wi-fi. The budget isn't strict but preferably around $200 per night. Currently looking at these: Bulfinch Hotel at 107 Merrimac Street http://www.bulfinchhotel.com And Double Tree Guest Suites Boston at 400 Soldiers Field Road http://doubletree1.hilton.com/en_US/dt/hotel/BOSSB The Bulfinch looks to be in a much better location but is around 490 more per night than the Double Tree Guest Suites - and the room is much smaller. Any assistance, other hotel option etc...would be greatly appreciated. |

| Boston | Camping on Cape Cod Posted: Thu March 20, 2008 10:19 AM UTC
I posted this on the Provincetown forum but didn't get any replies. Can anyone recommend any nice campsites on Cape Cod? Ideally one near Provincetown and one the South end of the Cape. We have a small two man tent and prefer peaceful campsites even if undeveloped over higly developed and commercialised campsites. A scenic spot/nice view would be great. we'll be visiting in June as part of tour of Boston and New England and we are probably staying two nights on the Cape.
Many thanks, Sam from England |

| Boston | Boston Red Sox ( excuse the postus prematus) Posted: Mon March 17, 2008 10:36 PM UTC
We will be visiting Boston the first second week of June and thought a Red Sox game would be in order.
Not knowing much about Red sox or the stadium please advise - where should be sit to feel part of the action ?( neither of us would be capable of catching fly balls but we like hot dogs and beer) Where should we buy tickets? ( I saw a site called tickets america- is that the place? Would you go to a afternoon or evening game? We are staying in beacon Hill area ( Liberty Hotel) so what is the best transport options Do you think the Red Sox Mariners game would be good and will we be killed if we route for Mariners ( being from Vancouver is seems the right thing to do - to support our fellow West Coast brethren) Also -- are ther any recomended walking tours of Boston ( not 30 people and a guy with a umbrella sticking in the air to follow) |

| Boston | Where to locals shop for clothes? Posted: Wed March 12, 2008 05:14 AM UTC
Hi again,
Are there any outlet malls in Boston (near the city, accessible by the T)? Or can you tell me where local Bostonians shop for clothes (affordable, lots of sales, etc)? We are not interested in high end or boutique stores. Family type stores like Old Navy, Ross, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Macy's, Burlington Coat Factory, J Jill, etc are what we're looking for. Also, where did Filene's move to? They closed the downtown crossing store for renovations, right? Thanks, kali |

| Boston | grocery and department stores near Faneuil Hall and TD Banknorth garden Posted: Mon March 10, 2008 11:01 PM UTC
Hi,
Can you tell me if there are any affordable (not fancy like Whole Foods) grocery stores or Wal-mart/K-mart type department stores within walking distance to the basketball arena and Faneuil Hall (we have groups staying near both places) to buy breakfast foods/snacks and odds and ends should we need it? Thanks, kali ps It still seems very, very cooooooold there! :) It's 78 here in Hawaii today and it's overcast and cool compared to normal. |

| Boston | Accommodation in Boston/Cambridge 23-25 June Posted: Mon March 10, 2008 10:12 AM UTC
My husband and I are hoping to stay in Boston/Cambridge for a couple of nights in late June as part of a fly-drive tour of New England. We are looking for a motel/hotel which is clean and hopefully less than 220 US$ per room per night. We would prefer to be able to park up our hire car and use public transport to get about the city as it stressful to drive in a city we don't know.
Can anyone recommend any accommodation/location. We wondered if any of the universities let rooms during the summer vacation? Any advice gratefully received. Thanks Sam from England |

| Boston | St. Patrick's Day in Boston Posted: Tue March 4, 2008 05:34 PM UTC
Hi,
I'm a 25 year-old female from NYC planning a visit to Boston with a few college friends for St. Paddy's Day. We want to go to the parade but we don't know the best spot to watch from. Also, what is there to do after the parade - like bars and restaurants where everyone goes out afterwards? We're planning to get to Boston on Saturday, March 15, so we'd like to make some plans for the weekend before the parade, too. What are the best neighborhoods and is there anything Irish or St. patrick's themed going on in the city on Saturday or Sunday? Where can we get good Irish food or just good, affordable food? Any concerts or museums we shouldn't miss? We're up for anything, and would prefer an Irish-theme. Thanks!!! |

| Boston | Don't know where to get help on this question! Posted: Tue March 4, 2008 12:47 AM UTC
My mom was one of eleven kids from Dorchester.... during WWII my mom and five of her brothers all joined various US Armed services. All went in and all came out!
Family history as passed down to us was this: somewhere in Boston there was either a park or a square or some type of memorial that had bricks or some such plaque for those families in the Boston area that had the most kids in the service. And Apparently my Grandmother had one of these bricks / plaques, whatever... made in her honor since she surely had tons of kids contributing to the war effort. We are having a family reunion in July this summer and we want to find this square, park, whatever it is --- IF it still exists. I don't know how to BEGIN to find it. Wouldn't know where to look... Any ideas? THANKS! |

| Boston | Colder than usual? Visiting in end of March and getting a bit worried Posted: Mon March 3, 2008 08:05 AM UTC
Aloha again all! It's the worry-wart from Hawaii. It's getting closer to our trip (last week in March) and it seems to me that the weather is colder than it usually is???
I have the temps for Boston on my iphone and well...your high temp is 25*F lower than our LOW temp here. According to the history at wunderground, the avg temp is supposed to be in the 40 or 50's during the last week in Mar. Is that still possible, being that it's still so cold there only 3 weeks before? I was thinking about it and the hottest temp there right now is just a bit warmer than the chill room where the salad is kept at Costco. brrrrrrr! I think our tops will be fine with the layering and the jackets/coats that we found, but is jeans enough (maybe with tights or nylons underneath)? I couldn't find cordoroy as someone suggested before. Also, will we look dumb wearing beanie type hats? My jacket doesn't have a hood, so I'll have to wear a hat but don't want to stick out like a tourist. Do we need waterproof shoes? Can we just spray our sneakers w/ waterproofing spray? I have leather ankle boots, but my husband and daughter only have sneaker/running shoes. Thanks so much again for all of your help. We're getting excited ... but also freaking out a bit about the cold weather you guys are having! |
