Haarlem A place to jam as a musician
Posted: Tue May 13, 2008 06:54 PM UTC
Hey guys.

I'm a danish guy who recently moved to the Haarlem/Amsterdam area and I was wondering about a thing. Where (if there is a possibility) can you jam? Best would be in the jazz or "pop/soul/funk/commonpartymusic"-genre.

Anyone? :)

Best wishes,
Thomas.

Amsterdam Amsterdam and beyond
Posted: Sat May 10, 2008 12:26 AM UTC
Hello dear Vters,

My boss just told be yesterday that I have to pack and be sent to the Hague for 2 weeks starting 13th May next week. :-)

So this is a bit last minute. Love to hear from you guys as to what I should / can do during the weekends -

a) I have been to Amsterdam and the Hague so hoping to go to other NL cities which have a different twist.Day trip or overnite? Any suggestions ?

b) Is there any major festivals or events or exhibition during the two weeks of
13-26 May that I should not miss ?

c) I was also hoping to visit one of the Scandinavian countries during one weekend ( eg Copenhagen )

- is it easier to travel by air or by bus / train ?
- how long is the journey ?
- is it easier to visit Sweden or Norway compared to Copenhagen ?

d) I saw in one of the forum thread that Schipol airport is somewhat like Terminal 5 condition . Is that true and when does the holiday in NL starts and ends ?

e) If there is any nearby and easy to access European cities of countries worth considering other than Copenhagen please shout :-) . France is out of the question because it is part of my annual Pilgrimage.

Many many thanks

Amsterdam Amsterdam to Brussels train
Posted: Wed May 7, 2008 01:00 AM UTC
I'm planning on taking the InterCity train from Amsterdam to Brussels. Because reserved seats are not an option on these trains, is a ticket purchased for a specific day good for any train that day?

I've read on this board that the ticket lines at Centraal Station are always long, so would I be better off buying my ticket online? Or is there a better option in Amsterdam?

Thanks!

Amsterdam Driving Amsterdam to Brugge
Posted: Thu May 1, 2008 02:53 AM UTC
On May 10 we plan to drive from Amsterdam to Brugge and to return to Schiphol Airport on May 13 for a flight the next day. On the trip to Brugge what would be the fastest, most direct routing? On the return to Schiphol Airport what would be the most scenic route? We'll have all day to spend on the return trip.

Amsterdam hotel for June 14-17
Posted: Mon April 28, 2008 10:13 PM UTC
for Saturday night thru Tuesday morning. Price range around 320 USD. Don't need any internet, TV, mini-bar, or bar. I want a real 60" queen, not 2 twins pushed together, No Smoke, and quiet as possible. I expect to be overpriced and cramped, but not be above a noisy bar. Yes, I know Amsterdam is a party town! I've spent over 3 hrs reading reviews on hotels.nl (not impressed), and Travelocity (higher quality). Narrowed down to: Golden Tulip, on quiet no-vehicle street; Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky; NH Museum Quarter; NH Amsterdam Center, real queen beds; Sofitel; and Holiday Inn Airport! Your advice means alot to me. THANKS.

Amsterdam Hotel panic! Now a hostel?
Posted: Mon April 28, 2008 04:12 PM UTC
Hi all,

I'm planning to visit Amsterdam this weekend (02-04 May), but haven't been able to find a hotel room (our budget is around 140 - 180 EUR per night) through all the usual websites. I've personally called 14 hotels and they are *ALL* booked (or out of my price range).

Can someone recommend a decent hostel, perhaps? Preferably, one which is:
-clean
-safe
-centrally located
-fun (though this is probably a given, if the first three requirements are met)

Is there any hope of just showing up on Friday without a booking and hoping that someone might have cancelled their reservation in the meantime?

Many thanks,
Srik

Amsterdam Let the good times roll (and all that sort of thing)
Posted: Sun April 27, 2008 06:14 PM UTC
Hi everyone!

Am back after ages: a friend of mine has come over from Washington D.C., and we plan to come over to Amsterdam for two nights (02, 03 May).

Will be grateful for any tips on friendly bars and events.

Also, would be v pleased to be shown around by nice natives (preferably of the female persuasion!). My friend and I are 29, Indian, reasonably interesting and good looking.

I've been to Amsterdam a couple of times but those were many moons ago.

Cheers and world peace,

Amsterdam Long waiting times at Schiphol!
Posted: Sat April 26, 2008 11:19 AM UTC
Please be aware of extremely long waiting times at Schiphol the coming days!

Make sure you are there 3-4 hours before departure, it's madness because everybody is going on holiday at this moment...

I missed my flight today because I could not check in on time because of the huge lines :-(

Do online check-in if available!

Cheers,

Amsterdam Use of tickets
Posted: Thu April 24, 2008 06:32 AM UTC
I will buy the 15-strips for use on trams or buses in Amsterdam. I will mainly travel between the Central Station, Van Gogh Museum and the Red Light District. I note that the number of strips I need to validate depends on the number of zones I will travel. Can any VT members advise me whether my said destinations are within the same zone? Is there any map or link I can find out the zone areas?

Schiphol SHORT PRIVATE TOUR OF AMSTERDAM FROM AIRPORT
Posted: Sat April 19, 2008 06:01 AM UTC
4 of us will have a 2 hr. 55 min. layover in Amsterdam, then continue on to the
United States. Would we have enough time to hire a private driver and he take us on a small drive into the city, perhaps a knowledgable person who could point out any spots of interest? Or, should we take the train I have read about and count on it getting us back on time? Or, should we just ditch the idea and miss seeing this wonderful place I have read so much about and am just heartbroken I will not be staying there for any time? However, another time will come around. Thanks

Amsterdam One Evening in Amsterdam
Posted: Thu April 17, 2008 07:24 PM UTC
I am in Amsterdam for one day in May this year. I arrive at 9:00 by the morning train from Antwerp. I have to park my luggage in some budget hotel (Euro 60 kinds)and go to Putten for work. I return from work at say 6:00pm local time.

1) What would be the best way to spend the evening? I mean the 'Must See' / Must do in Amsterdam.
2) What would be the most convenient area where I should stay.

Posted: Thu April 17, 2008 01:36 PM UTC
Hi dear Vts,

We are a Brazilian couple with a baby boy(18 months old)and we are going to Amsterdam on Aug 30th.

1) How propably will be the wheather? Cold, comfortable?
2) Could you please suggest us a budget place to stay ,also easy place to reach by bus or tram, as we will have many things to carry...the stroll, luggage and the baby :)
3) Is it easy to find baby food on the supermarktes? Such as Nestle, Gerber?

We are worried how to feed our baby...as it will be his first time abroad... and our first time with a baby.
