LAX Parking Posted: Fri June 19, 2009 09:37 PM UTC
I notice that most of the hotels along Century Blvd. charge a lot of money for parking while staying at the hotels. Are there any side streets/residential areas where one could park nearby and walk to the hotel?

Car hire Los Angeles (at airport or in city branches) Posted: Wed June 17, 2009 03:02 PM UTC
Hi
I am planning a holiday in California in August and want to rent a car when I arrive at LAX airport.
However browsing the usual car hire companies (Hertz, Budget,...) I got confused.
A quote from Hertz for 3 weeks with pick-up at the airport will cost me around $900. When I change the pickup location to a hotel branch in the city (Century City), the price drops to $570 for the same car and same period.
The difference is a "Hotel concession fee recovery" for the hotel and "airport concession fee recovery" for LAX. And there is a "Customer facility charge" included at LAX and not at the hotel. Could this make such a big difference?
Are there some other hidden charges that I am missing and will be charged later?
Any information and advice on this is more than welcome.

Advice on renting an RV in LA, California Posted: Mon June 8, 2009 10:17 PM UTC
Hi, I'm kinda new to this.
My girlfriend talked me into booking a campervan holiday in America.
I want to fly to LA and then go from there. But I'm a bit spoiled for choice in rental options.
Does anyone have any advice/experience?
My cousin said not to go with one of the really big companies, like Cruising America or Road bear. Because they just charge you through the nose without providing good service.
But there are literally dozens of smaller rental companies in the area, and I just can't tell who's good and who's not.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Nick

Time in LAX Posted: Sun May 31, 2009 04:53 AM UTC
Hi, my partner and self are flying into LAX from Australia (first time, YIPEE!)
We arrive at 7am(tues) on Qantas flight and then fly out at 11.45am to Kentucky with continental airlines. Wondering if anyone can suggest what to do for nearly five hours in between? Obviously we need to pass customs to begin and then make way to other terminal (which one, how far?). Should we just hang out or do you think possible to check in bags with Continental early and go for a walk or even short bus tour? Appreciate any info and cant wait to visit your fabulous country!! xxx

Hi all
Travelling to Los Angeles for my 60th in September with my partner.
Is it best to book ahead to get the best deals for room rates, or do you get a better deal by walking in and get the best room rate on the day?
Any info would be appreciated.

Driving around Posted: Thu May 21, 2009 09:28 PM UTC
Hi
I will be in LA on work in the first week of June. I plan to rent a car. I live in Asia but have rented and driven cars in NY, NJ and Orlando and found the experience quite plesant - no honking, polite drivers letting you cut lanes, enough space before people change lanes etc. Can I expect the same in LA or since the company will be picking up the tab for my transportation, should I use cabs. I am comfortable driving upto 75 mph, but even with a GPS, need to slow down at exits and turns.
How much will a mid-size car with full insurance coverage and GPS cost me?
Thanks for all your help.

Aussie Cop dropping in on LA Posted: Mon May 18, 2009 03:16 AM UTC
Hi. My best mate since I was 5 and I are travelling to the U.S from Sydney getting into LA on Thursday 20 August. We will be there for the Weekend and then hiring Harleys and riding up the coast to San Fransisco and across to Yosemite and down ending up in Vegas for a few days from weekend of the 29 August.
We would love to know where would be a great place to stay and hang out with some locals and tell a few stories over a few beers. We would love to do an aussie bbq cookup if any LA locals would be up for hosting a bit of a day/night of it and get a local crowd together.
Would love to hear from anyone in LA or might be on the trip on the way along.
Cheers

Ontario/Catalina Island /hotel question... Posted: Thu May 14, 2009 06:11 AM UTC
Hi,
It's a little tricky trying to put this together so I may as well ask someone who may have some great ideas based on their experience!!
I will be attending a two day meeting in Ontario, CA on June 11 and 12th..so was thinking I'd stay the 13th (Saturday) and fly back up to San Francisco on the 14th sometime (Sunday). I will be staying in Ontario the night of June 10th and the 11th (Wednesday and Thursday) but was thinking I'd find a hotel along the ocean somewhere for Friday night and look for a place to eat overlooking the ocean on Friday night and then maybe look for some nightlife.
Then I thought it might be fun to take a daytrip to Catalina Island on Saturday..find some more nightlife on Saturday (hey, I'm single) and head out to Ontario on Sunday for an afternoon flight back to San Fran (actually Oakland airport).
Sooo....I was thinking it might be easeir since I'm flying into Ontario to just get a round trip ticket out of Ontario..rent a car Friday night...drive to somewher like Huntington Beach or Long Beach and stay Friday night...maybe stay near where I can take a Catalina express ferry (I think downtown Long Beach has a harbor) at 8:30 on Saturday morning..stay the day arriving evening back in Long Beach. Then Sunday I'll grab breakfast somewhere..maybe after a drive or a jog or both...(maybe head down south a bit?)..before driving back to Ontario airport to depart....
If this seems doable, can anyone suggest a cheaper to medium priced hotel in the Long Beach area that is near the departing port for the Catalina express?? Or if there's a better idea or port to depart from, that's ok, too...just trying to maximize the time I have and having never been to Catalina I thought it might be a good day trip in June...
I'd like to find a hotel in the $50-$80 range...medium priced in that area...
Any suggestions would be appreciated...oh..also I just figure it's eassier to fly in and out of Ontario in stead of having to pay extra for dropping off the rental car back at LAX ..not to mention that I figure LAX will be croweded and more hassle trying to dump off the car and then shuttle to the airport...seems Ontario would be less hassle despite the hour or so drive back there on Sunday...
Your input will be greatly appreciated!!

Rush Hour Driving from Century City to Angel Stadium in Anaheim Posted: Mon May 11, 2009 05:04 PM UTC
Hello all,
I am going to a baseball game tomorrow (Tues) night. I will be leaving the Overland exit area off the 10 freeway at 5pm. I need to get to Angel Stadium by 7pm. The most direct way to go is the 10 East to the 5 South. Is there a better way to get there that would have less traffic? Or is any freeway south at that time going to be bad?
Thanks so much for the help!!

First trip to L.A. Posted: Thu May 7, 2009 08:08 PM UTC
My brother and I are going to be traveling to Los Angeles in mid Sept this year and I am needing advice on what to do and where to stay. We are definitely traveling on a budget , we are going to be renting a car so transportation is already taken care of. We are looking for a cheap hotel (100.00 or less per night ) in a good area and we are going to splurge on a very nice restaurant so any suggestions there would be great. We are looking for something that's not a chain... We will be staying for 1 week and we are the typical tourist and interested in all the tourist locations, we are also wanting to check out the celebrity cemeteries. And finally .....What's the weather that time of the year (Mid-September ) ?

Getting around town Posted: Wed May 6, 2009 02:32 PM UTC
Can you tell
We are coming to Los Angeles from Scotland in September and want to do all the tourist spots. Public transport is our aim. We are staying in Marriott Hotel Downtown. Can we go to 3rd St.Promenade from here and also Disneyland. I am a senior-travelling with my adult son. I would also like to go to the Fashion District. We will be able to find our way to Hollywood/Universal Studios.
Also is there anything to do in the evenings around Figuera St or locally?

Place to park car Posted: Mon May 4, 2009 03:46 AM UTC
I posted this under the San Francisco forum, but I wanted to know it for LA as well: Does anyone know a safe and cheap place to park outside the city, so that I can simply ride in?
I may be able to park it at a friend's house for a few days, but just in case I want to make sure. I always hate driving through that city.

LA Metro Posted: Mon April 27, 2009 07:55 AM UTC
Will be staying in North Hollywood and wonder how safe it is on the metro? We were thinking of taking metro rather than car to Hollywood and Highland and then onto Union Station but worried about the safety aspects.
I have heard that it is not so bad for the first part as it is mostly families like us, but it is the Union station journey that worries me.
Thanks in advance for your hel[p

Or should I expect deserted clubs? Me and my mate are into live music, dj/dance part of the things, and any idea will be greatly appreciated

Cheap accomodation Posted: Mon April 20, 2009 09:12 AM UTC
Hello everyone!
my boyfriend and I are going to LA for a week and we are looking for a nice and cheap place to stay around LA. HeŽs never been to CA before so we are renting a car and just drive around the famous places like downtown LA, Santa Monica, Venice Beach, Malibu, Santa Barbara, Hollywood, Universal Studios, Orange County, San Diego, etc. We are looking for something that is NOT right in the center of LA or Hollywood or anything like that because weŽll have a car to drive around anyway. We just need something nice, clean and cheap. No luxuries. Parking and breakfast will be a plus.
Any suggestions or recommendations will be much appreciated. Thank you guys!
