Basel Visiting Basel this month
Posted: Fri October 9, 2009 03:50 PM UTC
I am planning on visiting Basel this month end. Will be there for a week. Basel being border to France and Germany, Is there any good places in and around that area that I could take a quick peek and return back to Basel in the evening as I would be crashing out there during the nights.

Basel Train Tickets

I've got a DB ticket, Basel- Strassbourg, without any exact date (only the period) and seats. What are my actions? Should I stamp it somehow before boarding? Can I occupy any seat in the wagon of my class? Thank you.

Basel Night train from Milan to Germany and the Netherlands - does it stop at Basel?
Posted: Thu June 11, 2009 07:55 PM UTC
Hello.

I have a somewhat weird question to ask you.

There is a night train from Milan to a number of German cities continuing to the Netherlands as well. However, the timetable suggests that it only services German stations in the early morning. I know that many night trains have "maintenance stops" here and there and they spend a lot of time waiting unannounced at some stations during the night. It would be very convenient for me to get off at Basel or nearby, say Freiburg or somewhere in Northern Switzerland in the middle of the night (don't ask why, it's complicated to explain). That is why I wanted to ask you if somebody noticed this train stopping at unannounced train stations. Or do you know whom I can ask? I guess nobody would mind if I am getting OFF the train (rather than getting on, which is a problem for some night trains).

Thank you in advance

Basel Basel as base for 4 nights
Posted: Thu January 8, 2009 01:16 AM UTC
Hi, Driving from Munich to Basel and keep Basel as base for visiting Luzern, Zurich, Interlaken etc. Hotels around Basel seem a little more reasonable compared to Zurich. Some good hotel deals also showing up across the border in France.

Any other options for reasonable hotels/B&Bs ... how are border check points if staying in France(US passport)?

Thanks in advance!

Basel Christmas in Basel
Posted: Thu December 11, 2008 08:55 PM UTC
Hi everybody,

First time writing in this forum, and i really need any short of ideas. I will be travelling to Basel for Christmas with my wife and my two year old daughter. I've been there before so i have a short plan of going for example to Colmar (France) and Freiburg (Germany). But there will be 3 more days left free. Any ideas ? Also i plan travelling by train as i found it last time really convinient, i heard there is a prepaid pass, does it worth buying it and how can i do so (sites etc) . Do you think this is ok or a car would be necessary ? What about christmas specials around the area? (markets, festivals, events) As i will be spending my night time in Basel any suggestions for restaurants ? (local cuisine). Finally where can i get homemade chocolate ?

Thanks a lot,

Basel Basel VT Meet, Autumn.
Posted: Sat October 25, 2008 06:27 PM UTC
Dear travelers,

This forum is dedicated to our Basel VT meet in November, 2008.

My suggested dates are 29th, 30th of November and 6th and 7th of December, during the Weihnachtsstadt Basel.

The details plan on the meeting is still open for suggestions. I was thinking to do one of the famous Basel 3-countries trip, or just stroll around the city, or the vicinity Basel Land, or some late autumn hike (but the cold weather is a concern).

So, veteran Swiss VT members, please recommend what's in your mind. I'm just a 2 year-old alien novice in Switzerland. :)

Please feel free to post your available and preferred date and I will set up in meeting page accordingly.

Cheers,
James

ps. This meeting in opened for all travelers. It's an all-day event.

Basel Basel questions
Posted: Sun October 12, 2008 11:02 PM UTC
I plan to spend part of a day in Basel's Old Town. I have two questions. Since I will travel to Basel on German rail from Freiburg, how far is the DB rail station from Old Town?

Are Euro's accepted in Basel without exhorbitant exchange rate (since it is the middle of Euro country). I don't expect to need Swiss francs again anytime soon, so I hope not to have to get any (or very few).

Basel Cologne-Basel-Paris
Posted: Tue May 13, 2008 04:15 PM UTC
Hi everybody,

We are from Malaysia - will be driving (van-6 adults, 1 kid) from AMS to Basel via Koln (German) and will be spending time in Basel for 1 or 2 nights, before heading to Paris the day after. We are is a tight budget, so we choose to drive as it would be much cheaper for the seven of us.

I hope that everything would be fine. How's the road from Cologne-Basel-Paris look like? As we come from the left-side driving country...I hope there won't be much hassle for us. Anybody want to share the experiences of driving from Germany-Basel-Paris?

Your help is very much appreciated.

We'll be travelling through Basel in the summer en route to Italy. We need a hotel with rooms that can accommodate 2 adults and 3 children, but most websites only seem to allow you to book up to 2 children. Does anyone have any suggestions, please? Many thanks.

Basel River cruise dock in Basel
Posted: Thu February 28, 2008 04:51 AM UTC
Hello,

I'll be on a Grand Circle Travel river cruise starting in Basel and want to know where the river cruise boats usually dock. I'm trying to figure out where to stay in Basel the day before. I can't seem to find the exact area on a map.

Can someone help?

Also, do you think doing a river cruise (Basel to Antwerp) in late November a bad idea? Is it too cold to enjoy Basel this time of the year?

Also, will the city be decorated in Christmas lights at this time?

Thanks for any help.
