| Interlaken | Train Tickets Posted: Wed July 9, 2008 02:58 PM UTC
Hi, I am travelling next week to Switzerland with my wife and children. I will be landing in Zurich and taking a train to Interlaken where I stay for 4/5 days.
Could anyone suggest me what ticket (one-way) I should buy to travel from Zurich to Interlaken? I am planning to buy a 'Swiss Pass' for the next 4 days which also gives free tickets to my children. Is this a good choice or is there some other ticket I should buy for a family? Finally, please suggest me a few nice places to see in and around Interlaken. Thanks in advance. -K |

| Interlaken | I am looking for a summer hiking trip close to Interlaken! Posted: Sun June 29, 2008 09:11 AM UTC
Hei everybody!
I am going to stay in Interlaken in the beginning of July (8th to 13th), and I am planning to go for a hike in the region. Grindelwald, Kleine Scheidegg and Jungfraujoch all seem like fantastic places to visit, but from what I have read, Niederhorn – Gemmenalphorn is fantastic too! Basically everything looks wonderful, and I have a hard time prioritizing. Does anyone have any suggestions? And would you know of any nice place to be and watch the sunrise in the early morning? (probably everywhere :) Thanks! |

| Interlaken | Interlaken versus Zermatt Posted: Sat June 7, 2008 04:06 PM UTC
We are two 'over 60s' who have visited Zermatt twice (summertime) and loved it,but feel we should try another part of Switzerland in late September. We thought of Interlaken. The Jungfraubahn trip seems very expensive although the cost isn't a problem if it is really worth it.Last year we did St Moritz to Zermatt and really enjoyed the trip on the Glacier Express but it was a very long time to sit on a train.
We are not very fit so don't want to be changing trains too much. If we do go to Interlaken is it better to fly to Geneva or Zurich. We will travel from there by train. |

| Interlaken | Swiss Model Trains? Posted: Fri May 30, 2008 08:57 PM UTC
My husband and I recently returned from a fabulous trip to Switzerland, where we enjoyed the wonderful Swiss Rail system. This included the Golden Pass train, as well as the Berner Oberland Bahn, and the Jungfrau Bahn trains, going to the Shilthorn and Jungfrau peaks. When we were in Interlaken, we saw some gift shops selling models of these trains. Does anybody possibly know if there is anywhere I can order these trains from? It would make a fantastic 30th birthday gift for my husband!
Thank you, Jennifer |

| Interlaken | Weather and wildlife in late May? Posted: Sun April 27, 2008 06:42 PM UTC
Hello,
We are excited about our upcoming trip exploring the Berner Oberland region. Using Interlaken as our base, we will be exploring and hiking in the nearby areas, including Lauterbrunnen, Murren, and of course the Schilthorn and Jungfrau. Would anybody who lives, or has traveled to this area during this time of year be able to provide any insight as to the weather we should expect? Of course, we know it will vary depending on the elevation, but any suggestions for how to pack would be helpful. Also, any idea of what kinds of animals and vegetation we could expect to see? Thank you! |

| Interlaken | Interlaken - Junfraujoch Posted: Sun April 13, 2008 01:41 AM UTC
Hi,
I will be travelling from Paris to Luzern with a Eurail pass and arriving at about 17:14 on a Sunday. Hopefully from there I make my way to Interlaken and arrive there at about 19:49, well almost 8pm. Do hotels at Interlaken accept checkins at that time ? The next day, I'm planning a first morning train to Jungfraujoch and back the other route to Interlaken. 1) I understand there's a cheaper ticket - how do I get this and which train do I take ? I guess I buy it at the counter ? 2) Since I'm a eurail pass holder, do I get discounts? 3) How does the route work ...Does the train stop somewhere near the top, then we get off to look around then take the next train ? 4) In case there's really cloudy weather - how do i know - I guess I ask the hotel staff on that day ? What are the alternatives (as in Plan B) to look around Interlaken area ? Since it costs a fortune to get up there, I don't want to waste so much money to go up see just clouds. But God forbid bad weather - this is probably a once in a lifetime journey there for me. 5) Any good , nice, clean, friendly budget hotels in Interlaken - not too far from the train station (within 1/2 hour to 1 hour walking is fine) ? Many thanks, E |

| Interlaken | Skiing in May? Posted: Tue February 19, 2008 01:53 AM UTC
We are going to be staying in Interlaken from 21 May through 25 May 2008. It seems that we are right between the winter (until 20 May) and summer (starting 1 June) ski seasons for the region! While we realized that the timing of our trip may not be feasible to skiing, does anybody happen to know if it is possible, and where? Thanks!

| Interlaken | Questions for trip to Switzerland in the summer of 2008 Posted: Sun December 23, 2007 04:18 AM UTC
Hi Everybody,
I did post something similar in the "Switzerland Forum", but we weren't sure of things at the time and thought of going in May/June. After thinking and talking about the possibilities we have come up with a generalized trip plan which still needs work! But in the mean time I hope to find some answers to a few questions that I have about our trip to Switzerland. We will be travelling in the summer to Europe mainly to visit my family and friends in Belgium. While we are there we will be renting a car and like to go for a trip to Switzerland, we would like to stay in one area for 1 or maybe even 2 weeks. The 1 week is certain, but instead of a second week in the same area we may stay a week (or maybe only 3 days) in another area in Switzerland, but we are not sure yet. We found the area of Interlaken very attractive and we are looking for an apartment/chalet/cabin. While in the Interlaken region we would like to visit the town and it's surrounding area. We also hope to do the following trips: see the mountain regions of Pilatus, Rigi and Jungfraujoch. I have the following questions about this trip: *What are the things we CAN'T MISS during our week in Interlaken? *I have read about the regional pass (7 or 15 days) for trains, buses and boat trips. Is this same ticket also valid in the Lucerne area? *Is it possible to visit Zermatt and the Matterhorn in one day as a day trip from Interlaken or is this too far and too much in one day? *Does anybody know of any good apartment/chalet/cabins? All tips are welcome! Thanks in advance, Ann |

I'm looking for the most economical way from Interlaken to Schilthorn. We will only be in the area 1 day, so multi-day rail passes won't help. We are a group of 40 Girl Scouts, so if you know of any group rates and/or discounts, that helps, too!! Thank you!

| Interlaken | Jungfrau in early December - what are the correct trains from Interlaken (if running) Posted: Sun November 18, 2007 06:29 PM UTC
I have a possibility of having around *two days in the Zurich area the early part of December. I see it takes roughly 2 hours to get to Interlaken from Zurich.
1. Are the trains that go to Jungfrau running during this time of the year? 2. If #1 is yes, is it possible to wear hiking boots into the glacier, or do I need special snow boots? 3. Is the trip to Jungfrau doable as a day trip from Zurich? 4. I'm a Florida-California type who's used to being in New York in the winter ... how much colder does it get in those mountains? Would I be OK with layers (camisole, shirt, sweater or fleece shirt, scarf, and a good jacket)- hat and gloves - or do I need to purchase any special clothing. 5. I plan on going by myself - is it dangerous to go sightseeing for a woman alone this time of the year ... in two senses - first, is it very lonely up there, second, with hiking boots, is it easy to slip on the snow (I'm not too clumsy but like to take pictures). If going to Jungfrau does not sound like a good idea, could you suggest other places nearby where I could experience some of the season (yeah, want to get real cold ... he he) and see some Christmas decorated villages and pretty snow scenery? Thanks! |
