Tropea Hotels Posted: Sun June 14, 2009 08:46 PM UTC
Hello - I will be in Tropea on the 21st and 22nd of July....yes, I know, it is late ; Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced hotel or bed and breakfast. So far, I have Villa Giada and La Porta del Mare as possibilities.... Thanks much!
I was there a while ago in July and besides the beach and visiting local towns, what activities, nature, famous things can we see in the area? For example Rome and Florence is full of attractions, I am not expecting that much but I need to justify my drive from Rome to Calabria with something worth to see and do. As for beaches, when I was there one July we couldn't even go to the beach even though the hotel took us because the tide was too strong.. what to do then? Thanks.
Does anyone know any details about the train that supposedly runs from Cosenza town to the Sila mountains? I would appreciate any details. The only information I can find out is a picturesque steam train IN the sila mountains, but I want to travel to there from Cosenza by train.
We are thinking of taking our holiday in Calabria next year and would appreciate it if anyone is able to recommend any nice apartments by the sea(with pool) in the region.
I would be really grateful for help with this as we have never been to the area before.
Hi there,
I am planning to book a hotel in Tropea. It is my first time I do not use travel agency to do it for me and I am a bit suprised by their requierement to pay 30% in advance when booking and rest after arrival. Is this normal and safe? Should I pay special attention to anything when booking hotel myself?
Thank you very much for answer, Sava Matkovitch.
I am going to stay in a small village somewhere in Cosenza for two weeks in August. Below is a list of some of my holiday interests in no particular order. Please feel free to give any sensible suggestions. My forum title lists the questions I would like to ask. Also, I will be driving in Calabria and I would appreciate any suggestions from anyone as long as they are related to the Calabrian region. Relevant names, locations and or street names would be highly appreciated.
1. Restaurants (Nice food with a nice price)
2. Markets ( Where are the best ones? I love the hussle and bussle)
3. Beaches ( Any recommendations and why?)
4. Architecture (Lively areas worth a visit)
5. Festa's or carnivals in August
6. Any tours of places of interest whether they be official or unofficial
7. The usual touristy stuff (what not to miss and what to definately miss)
Thanks to anyone who replies especially if you can answer all seven questions.
Hi, I'm flying in to Rome (Campania)and need to travel by bus to Loreto Aprutino in Abruzzo. Can anyone help with the name of the company that would do this trip?

Ciao all,
I'm a young Canadian female who will be traveling throughout Southern Italy in mid-September. I'm wondering what is the safest way to get from the Atrani/Sorrento area to Tropea for a couple nights stay in what looks like paradise. :-) I'm completely open to buses/trains and transferring, even ferries if anyone knows of ways. I tried Trenitalia but everytime I tried to find out the different regions, I keep getting to the Italian website :S
Also, if any of you know the best way to get from Tropea to Reggio di Calabria, it would be much appreciated!
Thanks and greetings from Canada.
:-)
Hello there,
I'm planning to go to Calabria in september with my bf for 2 weeks approx. Any good tips on how to get there, where to stay and eat, what to do and on nice beaches? We plan to spend 500 Euros p.p. maximum, all included. Thanks for your helpful answers! :-) dewisri
IS there still the inter-Calabria train service mentioned for 5 Euro for 30km, 60km, 90km, 120 km? I was very interested to see the post from 2004 that there is such inexpensive service, so that one would not need a car from Lamezia to Tropea, the lovely beach resort. Does that still exist?
My other question is about how to get to the Lamezia train station from the Lamezia airport, is there a regular bus or something connecting them besides a taxi?
Trying to use the "trenialia.com" officialtrain website, I give up in despair. There is just no way to tell the price of any ticket. None of the pricing links works at all. I switch back and forth from English to Italian because it used to work in Italian but not in English. Now it works in NEITHER language!
Hi,
My husband and I will be travelling to Reggio in Feb 09. I need to visit a cemetery which is apparently between Scido and Santa Giorgia. I believ this cemetery used to be locked and you had to get a key to go inside. I need to visit my grandparents graves there. Can anyone help me with information regarding this cemetery.
WE are in Palermo in May. We thought we would go up to Reggio Di Calabria from there; hire a car and drive North.
2 questions. 1.Best way to get from Palermo to Reggio Di Calabria (safely..with luggage)(IE: Is there a Ferry or train??)
2. Any reccomendations on good place to hire car in Reggio Di Calabria - preferably not in the middle of town as we will be a little nervous driving in Italy at first (we are from Australia)? We want to take the hire car right up and leave at a town somewhere near Florence in a few days / 1 week after a nice back roads drive!
Many thanks for any reccomendations you may have.
I would like to visit a small ancestral town located outside of the city of reggio de calabria. Does anyone know anything about visits to such small towns. It appears to be near the aspromonte mountains and Gambari, which is a skiing & hiking destination. Thanks!

My husband and I are planning to visit Italy in September and will be visiting his ancestral home of Sant' Ilario. Has anyone visited this small village? can you tell me something about it?
Hi. We plan to travel by train from La Mezia to Sicily on Wednesday 30th April. We arrive in La Mezia on 16th April and wonder if we should book the train on that date in case they are full by the time they get to La Mezia? There again it is mid week and not tourist season? Thank you Karen
I'm having diffculty finding direct flights from UK to Lamezia in April and most of the properties I have found only open in May. It seems to me that the Calabria "season" starts in May, is this true? (sounds odd/unlikely to me, especically given other places in Italy are booking; Tuscany, Umbria etc)
I'm thinking of flying to Rome and driving down to Calabria, providing I can find a property that will let me book in April! Am I wasting my time? will the towns / restuarants etc be (mostly) shutdown waiting for May?
Hello travelers. I have 2 questions. We arrive Lamezia mid April, hire car and stay in Tramutola, Basilicata 1 week, then few days Maratea and along the coast, return car to Lamezia airport.
From there plan to go by train to Sicily 1 week. Then undecided, toying with the idea of train to Cinque Terra or Lakes for 1 week??
1. Does anyone know whether the train station (to Sicily)is within walking distance from Lamezia Airport?
2. How does our itinerary sound? We have been to the most popular tourist cities and now prefer to explore lesser known/non touristy areas in the South and Sicily. Would be grateful for any tips/ideas. Thank you
Ciao! My father's family (Forte, Fillippeli (spelling?), Giardino) come from the Domanico area of Cosenza. I have not been able to find out much more than that and am coming to Italy the first week in March. I would like to visit Domanico or Cosenza anyway but am having a hard time finding Domanico information. Does anyone know how far it is from Domanico and would a car need to be rented from Cosenza?
Grazie!
Hi
We are travelling from Syracuse to Bologna via the Eurostar from Villa San Giovanni, stopping only at Rome. The train leaves at 8:11 am, and we will need accommodation the night prior. Where is the best place, town or specific hotel etc to stay. We don't seem to be able to find much in V. S. Giovanni itself. Not too expensive please.
I wish to travel from mainland Italy (Reggio di Calabria) to Sicily with a car on a Saturday in July. I wish to book in advance to save problems. Is this the best way and if so which company should I contact?
can anyone help re the weather in dec/jan?
also, generally what is closed during this time?
as we'll be traveling w/ 2 sm children, any suggestions would help.
especially a hotel w/ a heated pool......grazie!
We are planning to travel to Simeri Crichi near Catanzaro in April, 2008. How would we get from Naples to Catanzaro and from there to Crichi. Is it easy to get a taxi in Catanzaro? Can we get to Crichi by public transporation?
