Naples Drive to Rome from Naples
Posted: Mon May 12, 2008 05:43 AM UTC
Hi everyone, my Hubbie and I will be in Naples on 17th Sept 08 we will be spending 3 nights in Sorrento, going to Pompeii, Positano, Ravello etc, we will then plan a drive from Naples to Rome along the coast road. Past Gaeta & Terracina etc.

My question what is there to see along the coast road, is this the best route to take, or are we better on the inland roads? Is there more to see inland?

And can you advise where to stay on the coast rd if this is the route we take.
Thanks VT Mates

Naples Visit Sorrento and Pompeii in 10 hours during a curise port call
Posted: Sat May 10, 2008 11:47 PM UTC
I shall cruise to Naples late this May and would like to visit both Pompeii and Sorrento during the port call. May I take a train from cruise port to Pompeii and then continue the train to Sorennto for a visit before taking the hydrofoil back to cruise port. Can I make it within 10 hours? Should I? Please give me suggestion and/or comment. Thanks.

Naples naples excelsior hotel area
Posted: Sun May 4, 2008 12:09 AM UTC
I read today a bunch of reviews of the hotel and area from another travel site and out of 50 or so that I read three people posted that they had been held up at knifepoint right in front of the hotel. This really sounds nuts to me. Is this a bad area and is something like this possible right in front of the hotel??

Campania Travel from Pompeii to Naples airport
Posted: Thu May 1, 2008 07:13 AM UTC
I would like to spend 2 nights and one full day in Pompeii in July but fly out of Naples early morning. Does anyone know if there is a direct bus or train between Pompeii and Naples Capodichino airport and where I might find timetable information? If there isn't a direct bus or train is it possible to take a taxi and how much would this likely cost? Thanks.

Pompeii Rail / bus travel from Naples to Pompeii
Posted: Mon April 28, 2008 06:19 PM UTC
Hi All,
We're docking for a day in Naples and are desperate to visit Pompeii.
I know we can only get a taste of Pompeii in a few hours, but would love to go.
Tour rates from the ship are stupid prices - is is feasable to get reliable, reasonable public train / bus services to Pompeii from Naples and back again.
If so how much does it cost and how often do they run.
Any other tips would be greatfully received.
Thanks in advance

Sorrento Getting to Sorrento
Posted: Tue April 22, 2008 07:50 AM UTC
Hi everyone, we have a few questions and any help/advice would be appreciated.
We are wanting to travel to Sorrento from Athens - can we fly direct to Naples or do you have to go via Rome? Also, what would be the best way of then getting to Sorrento using public transport (we don't want to hire a car)? How easy is it to get to Pompei - Positano - Capri and other nice places in the area? Last but not least, if we then wanted to get to Venice is it feasible to fly there from Naples or would trains be the answer? As we have been to Rome twice already would prefer not to have to go via there.
Many thanks.

Sorrento Sorrento for the Day???
Posted: Fri April 18, 2008 01:13 PM UTC
Our ship docks in Naples on a Wednesday, early November. We've already been to the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii. Is it easy to take the hydrofoil from Naples to Sorrento? Would there be much to see and do, walking, from where the hydrofoil leaves us off? I understand it is really "off season" so any suggestions would really be helpful...................Thanks, Karen

realmente sarebbero...................Thanks utili, Karen

Naples Faint of heart?
Posted: Sat April 12, 2008 03:31 PM UTC
So, why is Naples for the "faint-hearted"? If I did go to see the sights in Naples, what is worth seeing? Someone mentioned a few churches and the museum, but is there any kind of street or plaza that is worth seeing?

Naples Emphatic answers!
Posted: Fri April 11, 2008 08:18 PM UTC
Ok, so, driving is out of the question. Thank you so very much for the advice. I know I won't be sorry as I sit comfortably in the train watching all the traffic snarled up along the roads! So, my final question. Are you all already laughing? Would it be worth doing a couple of hours in Pompeii (I'm pretty sure that is about the amount of tolerance I can handle- ADHD!) going on train to Sorrento and then back to Naples or should I simply head back to Naples to see the sights there after Pompeii? Oh yeah, I am from Vancouver, Canada, and the drving here is pretty civilized. I have driven in places such as LA, so I figured it wouldn't be that difficult. I will heed your warnings everyone. Thanks.

Sorry. One last question (somehow I doubt that!) If I skip Sorrento and head back to Naples, what is there that might of interest to see and do? Shops? Plazas? Cafes? Best Pizza place?

Naples Time crunch!
Posted: Thu April 10, 2008 02:13 PM UTC
Me again. Thank you all for your answers to my questions. It would seem everyone is in agreement. Could you answer these questions then. Why not rent a car? I could drive to Pompeii and get there by 10:00, do a couple of hours (from what some of you have said 2 hours is enough and I am not one to look in nooks and crannies), leave Pompeii at 12:00ish, head to Sorrento (or would there be a similarly charming town / village to see near by?)and get there by 01:00. Hang out for an hour or so, leave at 2:00ish (or when the train leaves) and be back in time? The ship actually departs at 18:00, so if we are back by 16:30, that should leave lots of time for any kind of delay. Or maybe I am fooling myself!

Sorrento Sorento or Positano Parking a Car?
Posted: Wed April 9, 2008 01:43 AM UTC
Hi Everyone, I have really enjoyed the forum on Sorrento.
My Question is:
We are arriving in Naples from Crete, at 11.30am mid september, we will be picking up a hire car, I had decided to stay in Positano, I am rethinking this as I am concerned about the steep streets in Positano and where to park the car.
Am I better staying in Sorrento and doing my day trips by car to Positano, Pompeii, Capri etc. Or is the parking not so bad in Positano. Are we wasting valualbe time staying in Positano as sights seem to be closer to Sorrento?
We have 5 days to see the sights on Amalfi coast and drive to Rome for 3 days.

Kindest Regards
Linda

Naples More questions:
Posted: Sun April 6, 2008 05:16 PM UTC
I am thinking that I would like to go to Pompeii for sure, but it sounds like Sorrento is worth a visit. Is it possible to do by train. We will be getting a train from Naples at about 10:00 and will need to be back in Naples at 16:30. If we do Pompeii for 2-3 hours, will we still have time to get to Sorrento, spend a couple of hours there and then head back to Naples? Would I do this all by train? or should I rent a car and do it on my own?

Pompeii Finding a Guide for Pompeii in Advance
Posted: Sat April 5, 2008 04:52 AM UTC
Hello All,
I have been to Pompeii before and am knowledgable about the eruption of Vesuvio, but I am bringing 2 friends to the site for their first visit in May and I really want them to get a good tour. Can anyone recommend a good tour guide who knows the history of the place, speaks English well, and would be a good guide for a few hours visit to the site. I'd be equally interested in someone for Herculaneum as well.

We will be staying in Sorrento and have transportation, so we're just looking for a reputable guide we can meet at the sites. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Naples Cruising into Naples!
Posted: Thu April 3, 2008 10:25 PM UTC
We will be cruising into Naples in the summer. I have a few questions I would like answered and if someone could help it would be great.
1. Is Naples safe? If not, where should I avoid?
2. Is it easy to get to the train station from the cruise ship to travel to Pompeii? How do I get there? If I take a taxi, about how much will it cost?
3. I have read that the other site, Hercu... is worth seeing. What is the difference, and is it worth stopping on the way back from Pompeii?
4. Pizza originated in Naples. Where would I get the best, most authentic pizza? How would I get there.
5. Is there a plaza or town center in Naples where there are shops and cafes etc to visit that is a must see?
6. Any other suggestions... quaint towns, villages outside of Naples?

Hello - Can someone recommend a hotel about $200 euros/night (during first 2 weeks of June) that would have a nice thermal pool and nice clean rooms? Also we would love a terrace overlooking the sea.
Grazi!
