Getting to St. Jovan Bigorski Monastery Posted: Fri June 19, 2009 10:58 PM UTC
Hello.
This summer I am planing a trip to Macedonia and one of the stops should ideally be the monastery of St. Jovan Bigorski near Debar. How do I get there and at what time in the afternoon/evening will the monastery and its churches close? I see that the monastery is within a doable walking distance from the main road between Gostivar and Debar. Can I assume that the local buses can drop me off and pick me up where the road/path/whatever from the monastery meets the main road? Is it a normal practice? Alternatively, how much would a taxi cost from either town? I speak Bulgarian and Serbian so I don't expect any language difficulties in explaining to the bus drivers where and how I want to reach the monastery.
Thank you in advance

Hi
I am holidaying in Bulgaria in a couple of weeks, flying into Sofia, but thought i could do a side trip for a day or two into eastern Macedonia.
I will have a car, is there anywhere in the east/north east of any interest.
Reading the lonely planet, it sounds a boring part of the country, but i dont always trust lonely planet so wanted some local info if anyone has any?
In terms of inetersts,i am interested in walking, good scenery, mountains, adventure sports or if in towns/cities - good architecture, some nice bars, cafes...
any help is appreciated

Want to drop by Skopje for one day Posted: Mon June 8, 2009 03:17 AM UTC
Hi,
I will be in Greece next month and wanted to visit Skopje from Kalampaka. It seems that there is a bus to Thessaloniki. How do I go to Skopje from there? How long does it take? My only options are bus/train as I do not want to take taxis.
Also, I would like to know how far away Ohrid is from Skopje and how to get there.
Thanks.

Bank notes Posted: Tue May 26, 2009 06:56 PM UTC
Just returned from a trip to Skopje and found a few banknotes in my back pocket. There's 160 Denars in total (100, 50 & 10). It's not worth changing them at a bank, so, the first person who wants them to send me an address and they'll be in the post to you.

Definitive Bus times: Skopje - Pristina Posted: Wed May 13, 2009 01:45 PM UTC
I have been on the Skopje Bus Station website but the link to the English translation of the timetable doesn't work.
This is what I need to know
1. On a Thursday, what time doe the buses leave Skopje bus station to Pristina?
2. If the bus leaves at say 9am, what time do we need to arrive at the bus station?
3. Will we need to buy the tickets the day before or can we just turn up and get them?
4. Can we take luggage on the bus?
5. Is it a straightforward process getting the ticket, or will we need to learn some Russian?
Many thanks

Working Monasteries? Posted: Sat April 4, 2009 06:33 PM UTC
Hello,
Macedonia has several monasteries where you can stay for very little money and/or some help around the place. I would like to stay in a couple of them this summer, and i wonder if you can help me find them.
I already know Treskavec near Prilep, St Petka in Velgosti near Ohrid, St Joakim Osogovski near Kriva Palanka and Monastery of St Spas in Trstenik near Krusevo...Are there more?
Thanks,
Dennis

Train Skopje to Kalambaka Posted: Sun February 22, 2009 09:57 PM UTC
Hello,
Planning to go by train from Skopje to Kalambaka, Greece. According to the Bahn Europe website, a train leaves Skopje at 7:20am and arrives in Kalambaka at 3:30pm.
My question is whether it is possible to buy a ticket in Skopje all the way to Kalambaka -- or if it will be necessary to buy the ticket to Thessaloniki, and then buy the onward train ticket to Kalambaka there?
Thanks

What to do in Skopje Posted: Tue February 10, 2009 09:25 AM UTC
I'll be travelling by train to Kosovo this Easter. The only way to do that is from Skopje. Which means I will unfortunately have to spend 8 hours in Skopje on my way to Kosovo and 12 hours on my way back, between the night trains Beograd-Skopje and the IC trains Skopje-Fushë Kosovë. How on Earth do you spend 8 + 12 hours in Skopje?

Train tickets from Vienna to Skopje Posted: Sun February 8, 2009 09:54 PM UTC
Dear all,
I was trying to get train tickets from Vienna to Skopje for an organized tour this summer. However, in the Netherlands they say only to sell 'interrail'tickets which will cost me about 350,- euros to get from the Netherlands the Skopje and back. I think it would be cheaper to get only the normal tickets and not some sort of interrail ticket, but I can't find a place where I can buy these tickets.
Does anyone know where to buy traintickets for in the Balkan? Thanks in advance!

Thessaloniki airport to Strumica Posted: Mon February 2, 2009 09:40 AM UTC
Hello!
I have booked my flights to Thessaloniki from England but need to get from thessaloniki to Strumica in Macedonia. This trip will need to be made 3 times, once for myself and then once to pick my parents up from the airport and then once to take us all back to the airport. My boyfriend is Macedonian and he cannot come across the border. Has anyone got any suggestions or reccomend a safe way of traveling there. Both flights land about 1am.
Thank you!

Group Travel to Ancient Places Posted: Sat January 3, 2009 04:21 PM UTC
Hello VT Members,
We have a group of 5 students enrolling for their Masters Degree in Tourism from the University in Cameroon. They are hoping to write a project linking Africa and Europe, but taking keen interest in the Ancient places of that has made history for the centuries. Therefore based on this reason we have carefully selected Macedonia to be the first point of visit, to learn and discover the rich history that has made this country a special one over the centuries.
We therefore need assistance in arranging this visit which is due for later January 2009.
Please VT Members, I count on your immense support and assistance to make this historic visit a memorable one in the lives of the students; and as well be able to realize their project.
Kind Regards,
Mrs. Tabi

Obligatory Health Insurance in Macedonia Posted: Sat November 8, 2008 06:50 AM UTC
Hello,
I heard that Macedonia requests a valid health insurance at the border since 01/09/2008.
If you cannot proof that your insurance is valid in Macedonia, you will have to buy one at the border. I believe it is about 5 euros for up to 6 days, but it can be as expensive as 120 euros for 6-12 months.
It is advised to take an official international statement from your insurance company that your insurance covers Macedonia, in addition to your normal insurance papers or card.
Did somebody already have problems at the border? Please tell your story here!
Cheers
Dennis

Cheap bed in Orhid, Macedonia and/or a free, secluded place to camp. Posted: Tue September 2, 2008 01:36 PM UTC
Cheap bed in Orhid, Macedonia and/or a free, secluded place to camp.
1) I am looking for the absolute cheapest dorm/hostel/or bed in Orhid town for 1 or 2 nights. I've been told it's as cheap as 5euro (300 dinars) in September (since tourist season is over), but I am going there in the beginning of September so I am not sure. I think I need a name, address of a place?
2) If I can't find a 5 euro/night bed I prefer to sleep in my 1-person tent in a quiet corner of Orhid lake (on the beach, and not too far from the center). I will have to leave my backpack in the tent (when I go sightseeing), but I will, of course take my valuables with me, but the backpack has to stay, so I'd like to know if you have camped at Orhid before. I prefer not to pay to camp.
Thanks.
