Any tips, warnings or any other help would be great. Also has anyone flown through Ivory Coast airport. Im wondering how safe or not safe it is

Lake Malawi - Rent a cottage Posted: Fri July 3, 2009 01:17 PM UTC
Can anyone tell me if there is accommodation for rent at the south end of Lake Malawi? Hotel acommodation on the internet seems to suggest that Malawi is aiming at the luxury end of the tourist market.

Day trip to Nairobi National Park, Langata Giraffe Center and Daphne Orphanage Posted: Fri July 3, 2009 10:48 AM UTC
Hi,
I am going on a day trip to Nairobi National Park, Langata Giraffe Center and Daphne Orphanage. My travel agent cited me 100 USD (including game drive in NNP), but I should pay for park fees and entry fee in both giraffe center and Daphne orphanage.
Is this the price, or can i get it cheaper onsite?

Amsterdam to Cairo/Alexandria! Posted: Fri July 3, 2009 10:09 AM UTC
Hi All!
I am plannning an Egyptian get-away this winter during Christmas time. I will be starting from Amsterdam and would like to get to Alexandria or Cairo. But I cannot find any good budget flights that may be operating on this route. All that I find is way over budget!
Can anyone tell me any cheap flights from Amsterdam to Alexandria or Cairo? And which city should I choose to stay in, Alexandria or Cairo? I would also like to visit the Sphynx and the Pyramids. Is it all possible to be done in 4 days? Any help is highly appreciated as I dont have any idea about how and where to go in Egypt. Also, how will be the weather in that part of the world at that time of year????
Thanks again!

Koja, Uganda Posted: Fri July 3, 2009 12:38 AM UTC
My family ended up in a Polish Setllement Camp called Koja in Uganda.
My Auntie would like to go back to visit Koja, if this place still exists.
I believe it was on Victoria Lake.
They left there for England in 1948.

Info on Timing and Distance re the Suez Canel Posted: Thu July 2, 2009 11:27 PM UTC
My wife and I are planning a boat cruise from Dubai to Venice. We transit the Suez Canal and stop at Port Said.
My problem is trying to determine if the transit of the Suez Canal will be done in daylight or whether it will be a night time cruise. My travel agent is not able to answer the question. The itinerary states"
==========================================================
Depart Sharm-El-Sheikh, Egypt. at 4.00PM (1600 hrs) on Saturday
At Sea Sunday
Arrive Cairo (Port Said), Egypt 8.00am (0800hrs) Monday.
==========================================================
Based on that schedule can someone with local knowledge give an opinion whether or not we will be in the Suez Canal during daylight?.
I would also like to know.....how far is it from Sharm-El-Sheikh to the "start" of the actual canal, and likewise.....how far is it from the "end" on the Canal to Port Said.

How much would it cost Posted: Thu July 2, 2009 04:26 PM UTC
Hi,
I am going to Egypt with a friend during Christmas time. We want to sleep in a youth hostel and we have already looked the price for the plane ticket. The thing we don't know is how much it would cost there to eat, travel (either by autocar or taxi)and do some activities. We will be there around three weeks, in cairo. How much is the cost of living in Egypt? How much should we have to make sure we will be ok for three months?

How to enter Al Azhar Park?? Posted: Wed July 1, 2009 07:08 AM UTC
Is the only entrance on Salah Salem road? Are people allowed to walk to the entrance? The reason I ask is because the Lonely Planet book says you have to take a taxi to go to the park. I want to know if I can walk there from the downtown area, since it's only a few kilometers. Thanks!

Budgeting for 2 weeks - safari, etc. Posted: Tue June 30, 2009 10:37 AM UTC
Hello VT users, I will be going to Kenya for about 2 weeks in late July and I am doing some budgeting for the trip, especially the costs of safaris. I understand that the costs differ massively depending on how luxury/budget I want it to be, type of accommodation, which national park I am planning to go to, etc.
As I will be based in Nairobi and will only be able to find a tour operator once I get there, I would be extremely grateful if someone could give me a ball-park figure (a range) of how much the safaris will cost, assuming that it is a budget to mid-range safari with a reputable and established operator. Camping or lodging is fine with me.
I was expecting I wouldn't be a lot way off if I budget a day at around US$100? Is this too much/low for my criteria above? And in what currency do safari-goers normally pay for safaris? Do they accept Kenya Shillings, as well as Euros, GBP and USD?
Many thanks for your help in advance.

VT Staffer Needs Help with Press Project Posted: Mon June 29, 2009 05:42 PM UTC
Hi, Everyone,
This is Courtney, VT staff member and I need help with a little press project we're working on. The Guardian newspaper in the U.K. has challenged us to help answer a question from a reader about tour companies in Algeria. If we answer it and they publish the response, they'll post a link to VT, which would be great! (I'm also going to see if they can post the member name of whoever answers.)
Here's the question--thanks so much in advance for reading and responding. We always appreciate your input, especially when it comes to press projects!!!
Question:
I'm looking for a camel safari in the Sahara desert, preferably in Algeria, and need recommendations on a good tour company. I expect to travel from mid-September after the Ramadan, and as I'm looking for time for contemplation in the dessert I want to avoid heavy tourism. I'm used to independent travel, so prefer a small group, and am fairly hardened to harsh living conditions overseas, but have not experienced a desert before.
I live in France, so would wish to travel directly from there.
Aneeza
Take care,
Courtney

Rental Car in Namibia Posted: Mon June 29, 2009 11:18 AM UTC
Greetings from a new subscriber! My first enquiry! I am intending touring by car in Namibia/Botswana for four weeks in September 2009 and am looking for guidance re a reputable rental car company in Windhoek that will not charge an arm and a leg!! I will use a Toyota Corolla or something similar as I am not intending to head off into 4WD territory. But, I shall be spending days on gravel roads. I have had contact with Savannah, Odyssey, Value and Avis (most expensive!) and am favoring Savannah. Has anyone had any experience with Savannah?? I am from New Zealand and am familiar with driving on gravel so that does not concern me. Any advice will be most welcome - thank you!

INJECTIONS- Do we need any before we go? The best medication to take with us?

Seychelles - costs for accommodation and food Posted: Sat June 27, 2009 11:03 PM UTC
Hi,
we would like to go to Seychelles in September with our 1,5 years old son. We would like to spend there 2 weeks (7 days Mahe, 3 days Praslin, 4 days La Digue). But we are afraid of big costs of this holiday (for about 2 weeks) and whether it is suitable for a little baby. I would like to know:
1) Is it real to find some good accommodation under 40 euro per person on that islands? I have read that there are some cheap accommodations, but i dont know, if they arent too far from beach, or if they are free yet (because its only 3 months before our trip and the number of cheap rooms can be limited).
2) Food - what is the average price in cheap restaurants there? What are the prices in supermarkets?
3) Transfer in Mahe - i have heard that buses are cheap there, but are they comfortable and safe for traveling with a baby? Can i easy visit main beaches in Mahe with buses? What are prices for taxi there?
4) Transfer in La Digue - i have heard that bicykles are best choice for traveling there, but what to do with a small baby there, have they some child-seat for bicykles?
5) Ferrys between islands - is it comfortable for a baby? I know that between Mahe and Praslin i can use a plane, but cannot use it to travel to La Digue - and I have heard that a boat between Praslin and La Digue isnt much comfortable... Whats your opinion?
6) Health care - is in La Digue some hospital, or just a doctor?
7) Whale sharks - can i go swim with them, or only dive?
Thanks for every advice

activities Posted: Sat June 27, 2009 05:42 AM UTC
Hi people,
I will be in CT from 16-19 Aug. Can someone advise me about Shark cage diving/ Breaching locations- I am confused about 'Dyer island' & 'Seal Island'. Operators taking you to D-island claim both are similar, those taking you to S-island claim the other is commercial and hence justify their higher price for a trip to S-island. Can one spot whales on this trip or does one have to take a seperate tour for whale watching. Do whales come close to the boats or as someone suggested that one can very easily see them from the shore? Apart from hermanus which is the best place to see them from- closer to Cape town?
Is a trip to Robben Island worth it considering we are in CT for 3 days only.
We are hiring a car. Is it worth taking an organised tour to Cape Peninsula or can one find a guide once we get there? Or is a guide even necessary?
Anyone done deep sea/off-shore fishing? Is it fun/exciting? We are quite excited about it. What chances of the trip getting cancelled due to bad weather?
Thx
