Me and my husband will spend 4 days in Moscow between 17 to 21st February.
We'll stay at the Kempinsky. I'd like some tips for restaurants in the nearby.

I have also heard about an abandoned outdoor car museum, also, somewhere not far... would it be a good idea to hire car & driver for the day? can anybody recommend one? Not going until a bit later in the year,,, just trying to get a bit of info. thanks

Hey advice anyone, id like to do 2-3 weeks in Russia...around the golden ring type of areas but no itenary yet done, i have done tours in other countries but wouldnt mind just doing my own thing or hooking up with a couple others and renting a camper van....is this difficult in Russia??

From what ive heard you must state where u will be staying each night to obtain a visa....would it be a nightmare trying to do your own thing instead of a tour as far as language barrier ect???

Im very open to what i do but just looking for ideas....im off to Vietnam/cambodia in april and originally had tagged on Moscow-St Peteresburg for an extra 10 days but changed my mind as the extra travel and cost for 10 days didnot add up.....instead i will do Russia as a seperate trip in 10-14 months time and spend more time in Russia, kinda 2-3 weeks

Any advice would be helpful, thanks

Dear All,

I am visiting Mascow,Russia for a week from 16-jan-2012 through 21-jan-2012. Could you suggest a nice 4* or 5* hotel to stay in the city center (where the action is). I prefer to go out in the evenings, hence downtown is preferred. Any others tips welcome. Also how is the weather during this time.

Thanks in advance,
P

I’ll be on my way to study in Spain in August the 29th and have decided to take a little “detour” before my classes begins in December the 5th.

So I’ll land in Moscow Domodedovo December first at 4 AM. I’ll be leaving at December 4th at 7 AM, which give me 3 full days to enjoy the city.

I’ve already read all the “TOP QUESTIONS” and even opened a topic about the weather and, all set, now is time to work in my staying and trip schedule.

I want to stay at a hostel since I intend to go there only to sleep. One important thing is I’ll be carrying bags worth 1 month of staying Spain (2 big bags) so it needs to be easy to go from the airport to it. Also it’s important that it have a locker where I can keep my things safe.

I did some research I found some interesting ones. Chocolate Hostel, Godzila, Buddy Bear, Moscow Style and Green Mango.

Would you guys recommend any in particular? Also, the more it’s close to the Red Square and all the main attractions the better.

About the schedule I’ve made a little draft as follows:

Day 1

Kremlin

GUM (shopping)

Tverskaya Ulitsa

Pushkin Cafe

Eliseevsky market

Respublica Bookstore

Kamergensky Street (eat)

Day 2

Kitay-gorod

Arbat Street -

Tretyakov Museum or Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts

Panaroma museum of Borodino battle on Kutuzovsky

Cofee at hyatt ararat

Day 3

Metro stations: Novoslobodskaya, Mayakovskaya, Novokuznetskaya, Kropotinskaya, Kievskaya

Novodevichy monastery (tumulo do gogol, chekov, bulgakov)

Stalinskie Vysotki

Those where collected from other travellers lists, but I’m not sure if I’m leaving something behind.

I’m interested in history, arts and people in general.

Would you guys suggest anything?

Yes, in December I'm heading to Moscow again. I've been here enough to feel like an expert. Questions on travelling here (leisurely budget style) are welcomed.

This time I'd like to explore small-town Russia. Now I'm travelling on a small journalism/photography assignment. The aim is to capture winter Russia, thus the choice of December. Any advice where I should go to find hard-core authenticity? Drunk tractor drivers having a race, head-scarved babushkas with goats, men jumping into snow after the banya, that sort of thing? I know these are cliches but the travel mag that's paying for my trip wants just that. I'd ask Pasha, the Russian fixer supreme, but he reaction to my premeditated search for cliches may be dangerously violent.

Also any advice on renting an 4WD truck? Possibly with a camper.

For all of you have visited Moscow, or other Eastern European metropolis', how do they treat foreign women and tourists in general? My other question is, are women allowed in the Gentleman's Clubs and Strip Clubs? Or do they cater solely to men, as in women aren't even allowed in the door? Sorry I'm trying to figure out the schematics of everything over there.

Thanks a bunch!

Hi all!
On my way to India I'll have 2 or 3 days stop-over in Moscow. I was wondering if these few days could be a good amount of time to enjoy a bit the city or maybe too short (or why not, too long..). I should be there at the end of January. Is there any place really not worth to be visited at that time of the year?
Thanks for the advices!

Hi-
A few questions about Moscow-
My friend and I arrive late afternoon and will be there that night plus a day. will that day be enough time to see Moscow? What are the main "can't miss" attractions? can we walk to and from most of them? And easiest way to get from city center (staying at the Sheraton Moscow) to the train station that will take us on to St Petes...thanks!

Hello there.

I have just booked a flight to Istanbul where i have to changes plans in Moscow Sheremetyevo airport from F to D

I only have an hour & 1/2 to make the connecting flight. I was just wondering what is the process of changing terminals is it a short walk and easy to do.

Im thinking there is passport control for transit passangers (like in Beijing)and would i have to fill out a arrival card?

but i shouldnt need to obtain a transit visa since i do plan on getting one to enter St Petersburg later on in the trip.

I plan to visit Moscow in October for some archive research. I will also have some time to myself and would like to explore Moscow or, if possible, practical, and not too too dangerous, the countryside. The real countryside, with cows, collective farms, headscarved babushkas, drunken tractor-driving muzhiks and such. I'm now preparing for the trip and have a bunch of questions. Here:

(1) Any advice on where to go for visa support?

(2) What currency is it better to bring to Russia? Suppose $US or Euros? Cash only?

(3) I will be staying here 3-4 weeks. I'd like to rent an apartment. Offers are abundant but they all sound the same and kind of cheesy "A cozy apartment in a nice neighbourhood" doesn't really say much but they all sound pseudo-British. Also Russia is notorious for scam so I suppose I need to be careful not to lose my deposit money, or find that the rate is higher than promised when it's too late to make other arrangements etc. Any specific recommendations? A reliable agency or even better a specific landlord? It needs to be a quiet safe convenient location. Ideally, it should have good internet, telephone line with international access, washer etc. A large desk with good lighting would be nice. Is that too much to ask for? A room will do to. I'm hoping to spend no more than $2000 on accommodation.

(4) Car rental. I get claustrophobic unless I get out of the city once in a while. Will my Canadian license be accepted in Russia? Any advice as to where specifically I could rent a car inexpensively and hassle-free?

(5) If I want to explore the countryside, where should I go? The Golden Ring is promoted so intensely that I'm afraid to run into massive kitsch there and tourist rip-off. Where should I do to see what life is really like outside major cities? I'd love to inflict myself as a guest at someone's dacha. I will be able to make a few trips during my stay.

(6) How is weather in October? The least important of my concerns but still..

(7) Any safety advice? I'm no weakling but I'm a woman and my Jewish heritage is obvious. How xenophobic or anti-semitic is Russia these days?

(8) Will a notebook bought in Toronto work in Moscow? What's the voltage there? Is Russian Wi-Fi same as everywhere else?

(9) I read a lot about visa registration but can't make sense out of it. Any specific advice here?

(10) What are good presents to take to Russia?

(11) Any souvenir shopping hints?

A lot of questions, I know. On my part I promise to visit this board towards the end of my trip and make my own input to help other first-times.
