Siauliu Apskritis Getting to Hill of Crosses
Posted: Wed May 14, 2008 01:10 PM UTC
Hi, we would like to go to Hill of Crosses in the coming August, anyone could give us some idea should we go there from Vilnius or Kaunas. Which way is more convenient, more frequent bus running? We plan to have one-day trip, and take a taxi from Siauliu to Hill of crosses. Should we ask Tourist Centre to call a taxi to make sure it waits for us for returing to Siauliu?

Thanks,

Lithuania Cybańce (Cibonys)- Village History
Posted: Sun April 27, 2008 07:02 PM UTC
Hello, all...
I would appreciate it so much if someone could answer some questions about Cybańce (Cybance) in Alytus County for me. I am trying to determine if this is indeed the town my grandfather emigrated from in 1903. I believe the village is known today as Cibonys, but back then my records indicate it was Cybansky, in the Kolesniki (Kalesninkai) Parish, the Orany gmina, Wilno-Troki powiat. I think the church in the town was Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, or something like that. It was part of Russia at that time. Can anyone verify any of this? If this is his village, I intend to plan a visit to learn more about my heritage. I look forward to hearing from you!

Vilnius Where to eat?
Posted: Fri April 18, 2008 01:38 PM UTC
Hello All,

Me and my Mrs. will spend five days in Vilnius in June.
I find it sometimes difficult to find nice restaurants to
eat at when being in a new city. So I would appreciate if
you folks could recommend some places in and around old town.
Places with local dishes costing around 15 Euros would be nice.

Thanks,
Martti

Vilnius Searching for Lithuanian town formerly called 'Krivsun' or 'Krivsonin' on River Neris (Vilia)
Posted: Thu April 10, 2008 10:04 PM UTC
Planning a genealogical research trip and trying to identify the current name of a town between Kovno and Vilnius, that an 1899 letter refers to as 'Krivssun' or Krivsonin, which was an agricultural colony on the River Vilia / Neris. Perhaps it wasn't too far from Vievis ("Eveye"). Other clues I have were that they worked for a poish nobel by the name of Romer and also another polish noble named Aginski / Oginski who had distilleries. Does this ring a bell for anyone?

Vilnius Budget Accommodation
Posted: Wed April 2, 2008 09:11 AM UTC
Have went through a lot of hostels, a private room for two costs at least 50euro. I believe the same price is good enough to stay in a hotel as well? Any hotel/hostel around the price could you recommend? The euro is 20% higher than the time I started planning for this trip.  I am okay with mix-dorm but my friend has never done that. Thanks.

Thank you for your replies. They were helpful .
I have looked up Air Baltic. Is there a reasonable way to get from Budapest to Warsaw? Then I will go to Vilnius from there. Is there anything I will need different to go in and out of Poland? Also what is the weather like in Prague first two weeks of September? When do they get there beautiful fall color?
Thanks

Vilnius Day trip to Minsk?
Posted: Thu March 20, 2008 05:09 PM UTC
Thinking of a visit to Vilnius next month, and the possibility of a day trip to Minsk - if that's possible!

Has anyone done that?

Do you waste a lot of times at border crossings?

Do you get a visa on entry, or does it have to be in advance?

Does anyone in Vilnius offer organised transport there/back (presumably easier than taking a rented car in/out)?

It might seem an odd request, but I've been to Vilnius countless times and although Minsk is just along the road, I've never been! Just curious.

Lithuania 2.5 days in Vilnius
Posted: Tue March 18, 2008 01:28 PM UTC
I will stay in Vilnius for 2.5 days. I wonder if it is worth spending a day travelling to Kryziykalnas. My plan is:

29/4: arrive Vilnius in the evening
30/4: travel to Siauliai for Kryziykalnas
1/5: morning to Trakai, afternoon at Vilnius, and then take overnight train to Warszawa

It takes almost 7-hour round trip for going to Kryziykalnas, should I skip it?

Vilnius Vilnius to Riga - with stop at Siauliai in between
Posted: Mon March 17, 2008 04:45 PM UTC
Hello...my sister and I will be in Vilnius in early May and will be taking either a bus or train to go to Riga from there. Along the way we would really like to stop at Siauliai and see the Hill of Crosses for a couple of hours.

The www.toks.lt website is under construction so I cannot check routes. I was thinking that we would probably have to take the 6:41 train from Vilnius to Siauliai and then take the 14:42 train from Siauliai to Riga. I have checked Ecolines and the times are not convenient. Basically, I am hoping to find a Vilnius-Riga route that a) runs regularly and b) stops in Siauliai. Is this possible?

Thanks so much.

Lithuania Travel by bus (Estonia+Latvia+Lithuania)
Posted: Thu March 13, 2008 12:43 PM UTC
Will travel to Tallinn, Riga, Sigulda, Vilnius by bus in late April. Tried to check bus schedule and fares on web (www.eurolines.ee) but got contradictory prices. For example, from Vilnius to Warszawa, if I use LTL as currency, the fare is LTL105 for train departs at 2130; if use EURO as currency, the fare is 30euro and only departs at 1500 on the same day (1/5). Any tricks here?
