Budapest Planning a trip: Prague to Vienna to Budapest and feeling overwhelmed
Posted: Thu May 15, 2008 10:48 PM UTC
I'm planning this trip for three (me, my mom and sister)---we've never been on a trip together so I'm trying to make it special. We will be staying 4 nights in each city and would love to have some advice on what to do and where to stay. I do know we would like to stay in the city center for all three cities. I'd love to hear some suggestions about local restuarants or any day excursions you think are worth taking out of or in any of the cities. We really want to get a feel for the culture/history of all three cities. Any unique experiences that we shouldn't miss? Any advice on transportation to and from the airports or between cities?

We fly in to Prague on 7/12 and will leave on 7/16---considering masna apartment
Vienna from 7/16 to 7/20---considering Apartment Pension Sacher
Budapest from 7/20 to 7/24---unsure moderate price range

Thanks in advance for your suggestions

Budapest ID in budapest?
Posted: Thu May 15, 2008 09:50 PM UTC
as i understand it you are required to carry ID at all times in Budapest. unfortunately my main ID is my passport and i have been told i am best to leave it at the hotel. i dont have a drivers licence although i do have an old student card. would this be enough, as i really dont want to have to shell out £50 on a driver licence just to go to budapest! is there any restictions on what is acceptable?

Budapest Budapest to Krakow
Posted: Thu May 15, 2008 12:21 AM UTC
Hello!

I am trying to get info for a trip from Budapest to Krakow, Poland. I looked up on the "MAV" website and I was confused on the trains they listed. I want an overnight train with a direct connection, so I dont have to get off and change trains. I saw there were some with 0 stops, but when I click on it for details, it seems to be three different train numbers. I also can not figure out how to get a price and if I am able to book the ticket online. Can someone help clarify all that for me.

I also searched eurolines for a bus and I think I did something wrong because it says that it only takes 7 hours and is 34 USD. Can someone let me know if that is correct, and if not, what the real info would be.

Thanks!

Budapest where to stay?
Posted: Mon May 12, 2008 08:13 PM UTC
Driving with family of four to Budapest for a week in the early summer.
We would like to stay in a reasonably priced panzios near public transportation. Safe area that is clean. Amenities are not particularly important, but air conditioning I understand is important. Don't need to be directly down town and have heard that the Buda Hills are nice. We would prefer somewhere that we can walk to local restaurants. We speak English and German and would prefer a panzios that had staff that spoke one of these languages.

We stayed recently in Vienna about 1/2 hour out of town. Very nice place for 30 euros per person per evening with a excellent breakfast.

We plan to spend our time visiting the city and perhaps some of the surrounding countryside. I would welcome ideas on where to stay and things to see and do. Information on currency would also be welcome.

Hi,

Is it not possible to book online a ticket from Prague to budapest on www.bahn.de.

I have registered all of my information, however, I cannot get past the search screen to actually book the ticket. Either the my ticket cannot be booked online or I am missing something.

Any recommendations for some cool/interesting pubs that are away from the tourists spots. Also, perhaps any hotels that are in the same area and out of the touristy areas.

Thanks!

Budapest Hungarian Post
Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 01:42 PM UTC
Maybe someone could help me determine if I could ship a standard Samsonite suitcase around 10 kg with dimensions 79 x 54 x 31 cm from Budapest to Dubrovnik. I tried the website and phoning without much success. The charges from DHL and UPS were both over 100 Euros. If the post cannot handle this, does anyone know a local trucking company that might do this? Looking forward to my bicycle trip in Hungary. Thanks. Michael

Budapest Budapest to Warsaw by train - advance ticket purchase
Posted: Mon May 5, 2008 11:12 AM UTC
I plan to take an overnight train from Budapest to Warsaw on May 21st.
The "Savings Price" mentioned here
http://www.mav-start.hu/ajanlatok/kulfoldi_utazasi_ajanlatok.php?mid=147669b9fcaa34
seems like a good deal and I would certainly get 3 or 4 persons compartment.
Do I undestand it correctly that I have to add "seat reservation" fee mentioned in the chart below other prices to get the final price of the ticket?
Also, any ideas on the real availability of these "special offers" and how to check it? My plan was to write an email in English to Wasteels.hu, but other options would be highly appreciated (any experience calling MAV on such issues and getting an English speaker?)
And finally, where to get some information on the "regular price" for one way Budapest to Warsaw trip (not the one from jizdenka.cz, but the one that you actually pay if Sparprice is no longer available. So smth like walk up fare for airlines)

Thanks in advance for any useful hints!

Budapest Cheapest of the cheap hostels that accept dogs
Posted: Sun May 4, 2008 10:07 PM UTC
Szia,

I was wondering if anyone knows of VERY VERY VERY cheap hostels (don't have to be of great quality) that accepts dogs.

I would like it to be easy to get to from the airport, but apart from that the only thing I care about is a CHEAP price and that it accepts animals.

Is it easy to find rooms in 1 or 2 star hostels that accept dogs. I see plenty of 3 star plus places that do, but these are too pricey for me.

How much is the average price for the cheapest of the cheap hostels in Budapest (double room)?

Can you take dogs in taxi's, trains, trams, buses, metro?

Any help welcome on any of the above points.

Budapest Accommodation Outside Central Budapest
Posted: Fri May 2, 2008 10:26 PM UTC
Hi. I wonder if anyone could recommend any reasonable hotels (or apartments) on the outskirts of Budapest or even in a town close to Budapest.

We'll be travelling to Budapest by car, and do not wish to take it into central Budapest. Ideally we are looking for a hotel that is about 20 - 30 minutes from central Budapest.

I'm probably asking for too much, but it would be good if the hotel/apartment was in walking distance (10 minutes or so) of a metro stop or station and in a safe area.

Many thanks

Budapest 9 weeks in Budapest
Posted: Thu May 1, 2008 02:13 AM UTC
Hi there,
I'm from Toronto Ontario, and looking to get some general information about Budapest. My husband is going to be in Budapest, starting August 18th or so, for 9 weeks. We have a 1 year old son, and we would really like to accompany him on this exciting trip.

Accommodations will be taken care of (just not sure exactly where in the city yet). Basically just looking for an idea of things to do, language spoken, friendly city? Foods to try, currency, places to shop, etc. Just normal every day stuff, since we'll be doing normal every day stuff...for NINE weeks!

Since we're bringing our son, does anyone know of certain "department" type stores that may have a website, so we can get baby gear, ie. stroller, high chair, or perhaps used goods stores? Just so we don't have to lug everything from Canada on the flight over. Just want all our bases covered.

Any info/advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for reading and take care,
Erin

Budapest Budapest Hotel Advice
Posted: Tue April 29, 2008 12:16 PM UTC
Hi all,

I hope you can help. I can taking my girlfriend to Budapest for her birthday in September and would like some advice on where to stay and what is a must to do/see while over there.

We are both in our early 20’s so we are looking for a hotel close to the centre (near attractions/nightlife) for around €100 per night. If anyone can recommend a hotel that fits the bill I would really appreciate it.

Also, could people recommend what is a must to see/do which in Budapest as I want to make this holiday as romantic/memorable as possible.

Any information you can give would really help, I am doing some research myself but there is nothing better than people’s 1st hand experience of Budapest to get the most of the city.

I want to make this a romantic holiday so if anyone can recommend things to do/see to make it as romantic as possible I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,
AM

Budapest Bicycling in Hungary
Posted: Mon April 28, 2008 03:42 AM UTC
I'm planning to bicycle from Budapest to Zagreb. I'll probably leave Budapest around June 3. I'd like to spend about a week, riding about 50-100 km on riding days and layover days hiking and sightseeing. Does anyone have a suggested route? I was planning to stay in hostels or places that might be in Lonely Planet. Anyone have any information for me? Care to come along ;-) Michael

Budapest November things to do?

Hi, we are going there in November for 3 nights. Found a good deal for the Alfa Apartment Hotel on Erkel street. Is that a good location? Also, can you give me some advice on things to do in November. I was thinking a boat ride on the Danube, or some walking trips. Also, do you know some good day spas near by so I can do the girl thing and get spoiled?

Budapest Airport transfer for 5 people: minivan, or 2 taxies?
Posted: Thu April 24, 2008 10:45 AM UTC
Hi!
We are 5 girls travelling to Budapest. It seems to be difficult to get all 5 into one taxi, therefore I wonder: what is the best option we could choose?
2 taxies (which companies then? I ve read it is wise to book in advance) or a
minibus?
I also found this company on line: http://www.budshuttle.com/ Hav eanybody used them before? They are charging 9000 HUF one way for a minivan. Is it ok price or we still get it cheaper taking 2 taxies?

Budapest Transporting a package from Budapest to Dubrovnik
Posted: Wed April 23, 2008 01:35 AM UTC
I will be traveling from Budapest to Dubrovnik but have a 10 kg suitcase that I'd like to forward to Dubrovnik. After the shock of finding out that DHL charges over $350, a friend in transportation said they probably airfreight and try UPS. They were more reasonable at about $150 but I can't imagine businesses in Europe would pay that amount to move 10 kg of freight. Does anyone know the name of a trucking company that might be able to take my package or are the rates really that high? Thanks. Michael

Budapest Strasbourg - Viene - Budapest - Prague - Berlin
Posted: Mon April 21, 2008 10:57 PM UTC
Hello all, I will be traveling in some countries of Central and I want your help to know if you can write me some options to travel between Strasbourg - Viene - Budapest - Prague - Berlin. Is it possible to do everything by train? Or by bus? Is there any kind of "pass" that I can buy for all the trips? Does it have buses between these cities everyday?
My plan is:

Strasbourg 4 days
Viene 5 days
Budapeste 4 days
Prague 3 days

in the 5th day travel between Strasbourg - Viene
in the 10th day travel between Viene - Budapeste
in the 14th day travel between Budapeste and Prague
in the 17th day travel between Prague and Berlin

I do not like to travel during the night or arrive late night in the cities, but if necessary it would be ok.
Thanks a lot!
