We are looking for a place to sleep in a safe area, comfortable but not too costy and with easy access to public transportation. Please hand me any information about places you have been at that could fit us. Thank you!

Hi folks,

We are looking for any information regarding Hotel Campo De Fiori in Rome, Italy...we have been reading the reviews on several websites and while many are favorable, we did have a concern from one review...it stated that there was a constant police presence outside the hotel due to a younger crowd gathering at the restaurants and bars in the evening and that there was alot of rowdiness, etc. going on. Can anyone with a recent stay very this...Thank you!

We are travelling all over Italy for two weeks- mostly by train, but we want to rent a car for just two days from Florence to drive around Tuscany and visit a winery or two and stay in a farmhouse. Given the rates for renting a car for just two days are very high, would this be a good idea:

or is there something I am missing?

After a lot of reading, it seems almost all the world war two sites have benn re-built. Makes sense .
We found a small town, not far from casino.
San Pietro Infini.
They didnt rebuild the original town, they just rebuilt a whole town next to it.
Id really like to see the old ruins.
checking out google images of it were very cool.
Anyone been there? And can anyone recomend the best way to fit that in transportation wise?
It looks like it could be a day trip from rome....
we thought maybe renting a car out of rome for a day might be a way to see some smaller villages.
We also might be traveling from florence to naples area, and wondered the best way to make a side trip on that journey to include casino and san pietro

Hi all, I'm planning a trip for my wife for her birthday in June. We will be there end of june to july for 10-11 days. I'm trying to get all of the arrangements organized and start to order flights etc. My thoughts are as follows. Any suggestions I would really appreciate!
Fly into Rome
Go straight to florence stay there for 2 days
Go up to cinque terra for 2 days
Down to naples, capri, amalfi coast for 5 days
Finish back in rome for the final 2 days.
Do i have time to do all of this? What are some things that are "must sees"? This is our first time to italy!
Thanks for all your suggestions

I am planning a trip with a friend to Italy in September this year. I want to travel to Naples, Rome, Florence and Venice. Our budget is tight so we're wondering what would be the quickest/cheapest way to travel. We want to spend two days in each city.
Any advice? Many thanks

We want to possibly rent a car in Italy when we leave Florence to tour Chianti, etc. before going to Rome.
1) Can anyone recommend a car rental company?
2) Is there anything special I need to know about renting a car in Italy that is different than the states?
3) Can I drop off the car outside Rome or do I have to return it to place where I picked it up and take the train from Florence to Rome?
Is there anything else that I am forgetting to ask?

We want to do Tuscany and visit a winery(s). Siena? Would Chianti be better? Can anyone recommend a nice, quaint place to stay near the vineyards for 2 people anywhere in Tuscany? For this leg of the trip, we are not necessarily looking for the city, but some peaceful views and good wine. I am also open to renting a car and driving from Florence to Tuscany and then on to Rome? Is this feasible or recommended or should we stick with the bus/train?

We were going to stop in the Cinque Terre, but I was made aware of the flood damage in that area. I am guessing it may not be up and running by the time July comes? We are flying into Venice and then taking the train to Florence, then on to Tuscany and then to Rome. We have two weeks and we are spending about 2-3 days in each city (4 in Rome). Is there a nice beach town somewhere along the way or just past Rome that we can stay at for a day or two? Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hello,
My girlfriend and I are spending 3 nights in Anacapri in July. Before we booked our hotels we didn't do much research on the island apart from the fact it's a beautiful place to visit. Now it seems it's quite an expensive place to be...
Could anyone advise us on cheap places to eat as we'll be eating out every night. We're on quite a tight budget.
Also what is transport like at night? Say if we wanted to eat in Capri and come back at midnight or something.
Any other advice is appreciated and welcome.
Thank you.

I m just joined , so it will take me a long time to sift through all the good information on the back-posts. I pre-apologize if I ask something that has been covered.
My wife and I are going to italy for two weeks at the end of march.
We have about 10 of the popular travel planniong book , which have been helpful.
But its just overwheleming.
We cant pin down where we want to stay ( cities)
The first week is rome and venice, and we dont care if we tour and shop till we drop...but towards the last 4-5 days, we'd like to be in a smaller town and feel more part of italy. Maybe stay in the same location 4-5 nights and just blend in and slow down.
Still tour and walk and all that, just at a slower pace. We're always trying to cram so much in.
Its just impossible to narrow down where you want to stay.
Some of the choices we're thinking of; cinque terra, naples area ( could maybe feel small-town-ish but yet have acess to a lot if we want. We are also really considering sicily, but dont know if its too expensive.
Sorry for the rookie questions, but we're getting information overload

I'll visit Milano in late March and unfortunately tickets for Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper are already sold out.
Is it possible to visit Santa Maria delle Grazie anyway? And is it worth to visit the church without having tickets for the last supper?

Hello VT members!
I was wondering if it was possible to get train tickets for Italy online and if it was how far in advance? (for example Germany has this, Belgium too - and I find it much cheaper - advance tickets - and also more convenient because I don't have to look for ticket offices etc.
And also - when in Italy (I assume if they exist that it's not possible to buy them online) - have you heard about the 10-ride-across-the-country tickets or similar (my friend bought one to do some travelling across Belgium and it was not that expensive.)
Thank you in advance!

We want to go (by train) from Sorrento to Rome, and to stop for a few hours to visit Naples. We shall have luggages, but I suppose that there are lockers at the train station.
Is it possible to see most important sightseeing of Naples in 5-6 hours?
I was thinking about taking a tour and then continue to walk. But I see that these tours start at 8:30 from train station; I am not sure that we can be so early there and (and to have time to deposit the luggage).
Is any other option?
Our plan is to be there on 2nd January 2013.

We have two weeks in Italy and here is our current itinerary. What do you think? We plan to pretty much travel by train everywhere if possible. We want to split our time between big cities and sight-seeing, as well as relaxation and see a little ocean too. This is our first and probably last big trip to Europe for quite awhile. We live in Iowa and will be flying out of Chicago. Will this work?
Saturday 6/30- Fly to Venice from Chicago
Sunday 7/1- Venice
Monday 7/2- Venice
Tuesday 7/3- Take train from Venice to Monterosso via La Spezia in pm
Wednesday 7/4- Monterosso (Beach)
Thursday 7/5- Monterosso to Florence via La Spezia
Friday 7/6 Florence
Saturday 7/7- Florence
Sunday 7/8 Florence to Siena
Monday 7/9 Siena (wine!)
Tuesday 7/10 Siena to Rome
Wednesday 7/11 Rome
Thursday 7/12 Rome/Vatican City
Friday 7/13 Rome
Saturday 7/14 Fly from Rome to Chicago

There seem to be so many farmhouses to choose from in Tuscany! What we are looking for is a somewhat luxurious place to stay for our honeymoon for 2-3 nights. We'd like to stay somewhere which is not difficult to get to by public transport, has lots of activities near by, and relaxing and delicious things to do on site. We love spas, exercise, delicious food and wine, and beautiful scenery. Does anyone have any suggestions??

We will be traveling to Italy for a little over two months from May to July. We arrive in Rome and have about a week to travel the southern area before taking the ferry to Sicily. We have been to the Amalfi coast and Sorrento area a few times but never to Calabria. We are looking for any suggestions on where to stay and visit? Is it to much to drive from Rome to Calabria in one day, should we stop for a day or two in Sorrento (one of our favorite places)?
How about in Sicily
we are planning to stay there about three weeks. We will have a car for our entire stay and want to take the ferry to and from Sicily. When we leave Sicily we are going to take the ferry to Genoa as we rented a flat in Portofino for 2 weeks and then a flat in Senia for three weeks where we are invited to see the Palio before returning home.

Two of us are disembarking the cruise with luggage from Celebrity Equinox at the Livorno pier on Sunday, April 29th, 2012. Celebrity will not allow us to book a Florence excursion one-way and take our luggage with us.
What would be the best option(s) for transport directly from the pier to the main train station in Florence (Santa Maria Novella)? We received a quote of 160 euros from one transfer service, but that seems excessive.
