Basse-Normandie D-Day Info - I'm clueless
Posted: Wed August 13, 2008 03:03 AM UTC
Hi,

Im not a war or history buff but will be travelling with my brother who is in the army so he's very keen to see the sites.

We will only be in Normandy for a few hours, coming from Paris by train. What are the best, most informative and easy places to get to. As we'll only have the day, I would love to know which locations are considered the best.

Any help is appreciated!

Hubby and I will not arrive at MSM till about 7 pm in early September. What will be open at that time? And do they keep some sort of street lights on so you can walk around in the evening?

Thank for your help.

Bayeux Art to see (other than the tapestry) and budget meals
Posted: Sat July 19, 2008 08:25 PM UTC
We will be in Bayeux in November, primarily to see the tapestry. Other than the cathedral, does anyone have advice for other artworks or buildings to see? We are not interested in WWII history, and we won't be using a car. Also enjoys classical/vocal music.

Also, please advise me on places to eat on a budget: meals under 15 euro, markets or grocieries, bakeries, etc.

Thanks!

Mont Saint Michel Mt St Michel to St Malo
Posted: Tue May 20, 2008 09:07 AM UTC
Hey,
I am planning to go from Mt St Michel/Pontorson to St Malo around noon-2pm. I know the http://www.lescourriersbretons.fr site but they only have one bus in the morning and one later in the afternoon. There are also 3 trains but also in the morning and then again after 4pm.
Does anyone know if there are other buses or maybe regional trains that go to St Malo in the middle of the day?
Thank you!

Caen Portsmouth to Honfleur - left luggage in Caen
Posted: Tue April 22, 2008 12:46 PM UTC
I'm arriving on the overnight sailing from Portsmouth. Looks to me that the first express bus to Honfleur is at about 12.40. So, that gives us about 3 hours in Caen - but with luggage. Does the SNCF, or elsewhere, have facilities for leaving luggage? - or does anyone have any bright ideas?

Thanks

Cherbourg First time going to Cherbourg shopping and need some help please
Posted: Fri April 11, 2008 11:22 PM UTC
Hi

I am new to the forum and need some valued help please.

I have never been out of Britain so I have no idea what to do etc when I go on my shopping trip to Cherbourg.

I am actually going to buy some wine and tobacco. I have looked around on the net and see that as far as tobacco is concerned I am allowed to legally bring back 3kg. When I go, I will be a foot passenger on the ferry as I don't drive so I am wondering firstly if anyone knows if there are any wine and tobacco hypermarkets very close to the port and secondly, how much will I pay for a good wine (any pointers greatfully accepted) and how much will I pay for a 50g packet of golden virginia?

Hoping someone can help

Thanks a lot and take care all

Posted: Sun April 6, 2008 04:35 PM UTC
Hello,
I'll go to france in august and i'd like to stay with my girlfriend for a few days in mt st michel. We were planning to stay 3,5 days in the Loire Valley and 2 days in Mont St MIchel. Do you think that it is enough? How many days I need to see all the atractions and sightseens of Mt St Michel? Late august (21-23th) is still crowded? is it unbearable? Can we sleep there (how expensive it'd be?)
thanks,

Mont Saint Michel Need help for Rennes-Mont St Michelle
Posted: Mon January 21, 2008 02:38 AM UTC
I need your help. I plan to visit Mont St Michel in June 2008.

I arrive in Paris on Fri June 27 around 9:30 am. My plan is to hop on the 1:30 or so TGV to Rennes. I should be there around 3:30.

At that point, is it best to take the bus to Mont St. Michel. I'll get there after 5pm? Or would it better for me to stay in Rennes overnight and head to Mont St Michel the next morning?

Thank you.

Le Havre Best way to Paris
Posted: Sat January 19, 2008 12:31 AM UTC
We will be arriving aboard a ship in April and would like to go to Paris. What is the best way and how long is the trip? I've read posts about the train and strikes, how reliable are the trains? Is there a tour company that will pick up at the ship to go to Paris and isn't priced out of sight? Thanks for any help!!

Mont Saint Michel storing luggage while touring?
Posted: Sun December 23, 2007 11:00 PM UTC
I am traveling from Paris with a group of students next month and we plan to visit Mont St. Michel on our way to another location in Normandy. What is the best way to store luggage for the day? We'll be coming by TGV train to Rennes & then bus to Mont St. Michel - should we opt for storing it in Rennes or is there somewhere in Mont St. Michel?

We are spending an evening at MSM in late February. What are the business hours for the shops? Do they operate on the same hours as the abbey or will they be open earlier and/or later?

Basse-Normandie Flea Markets in the Normandy area?
Posted: Thu August 30, 2007 02:36 PM UTC
Hello! We'll be in Basse Normandie from 2nd to 16th Sept and I'd love to have a good rummage round some flea markets. Does anyone know of any in the area? We're driving so distance isn't too much of a problem, within reason!

Thank you!

Mont Saint Michel Need help visiting Mont-St-Michel
Posted: Sat August 18, 2007 12:40 AM UTC
My wife and I will be taking a day trip to Mont-St-Michel on our way to the D-Day beaches. I checked the SNCF website and we can take a train to Rennes from Paris. We then take a bus from Rennes to Mont-St-Michel (I think it is a bus - it says "coach" but it is via the SNCF site). I have two questions:

1. Will there be lockers or storage at the Rennes train station? We will have our baggage with us.

2. How close does the bus get us to the abbey? Will it go up the causeway?

Thanks.

Bayeux Bayeux SNCF Station to Novotel
Posted: Sun August 12, 2007 08:52 PM UTC
Hi/Salut

I'm coming to Bayeux later this week and I literally have just an afternoon and a morning to see the sights.

The tapestry and cathedral are musts of course but is there anywhere else I should see and do. I'll be on foot.

Any recommendations for lunch?

CAnd finally, could anyone tell me how long it would take to walk from the Gare SNCF to the Novotel on the rue Saint Patrice.

Many thanks

Basse-Normandie Anything you'd recommend for a toddler (and his long-suffering parents!) ?
Posted: Fri August 10, 2007 06:57 PM UTC
We're staying at the 'La Vallee' Eurocamp site for 2 weeks in early Sept and although I know the area is teeming with wonderful things to do and see, I was wondering if anyone knew of a specific place or activity in the area that would keep an 18-month-old fireball happy?!

He loves animals (as does mummy!) so hopefully there be lots of countryside/wildlife walks and farm visits, as well as the obligatory beach trip and swimming!

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Mont Saint Michel Best way to get to Mont St.. Michel from London?
Posted: Tue June 19, 2007 12:45 AM UTC
I'm going to be in London for a week, then France, using Paris as my base. I'd like to figure out the best way to get to Mont St. Michel for a day trip. Would it make more sense to:

1) Take a ferry to the town nearest Mont St. Michel and take the last train to Paris after my visit to the Mont OR
2) Go to Paris, and visit Mont St. Michel the following day

Thanks,
Emile

Basse-Normandie Strategic position
Posted: Thu June 7, 2007 12:59 PM UTC
Hi everyone,
I'll be in Normandie the 3rd week of July, I'll have my own car available for the holiday. Can anyone suggest me which are the more strategic places for the accommodation? I would like to easily reach: Rouen, Eu, Dieppe, Etretat, Fecamp, Honfleur, Deauville, Trouville Sur Mer, Caen, Bayeux. I was thinking about Honfleur as "barycentric" departure point. What do you think? Do you suggest me some other places that I can't miss?
Any suggestion will be appreciated!
Thank you very much in advance!
Cheers
