I'm trying to gather whether or not it would be realistic to see both ancient Mycenae as well as Epidaurus in one (long) day from Athens, using public transportation. There are many many guided tours that follow this path, but I'm hoping to be able to save some money and do it on my own.

Can anyone offer any advice?

My wife I would like to visit wineries in Crete.

We are arriving by ship to Corfu. How far is the Old City of Corfu from the ships arrival point?. How would we get to Kassiopi as you have made it sound well worth a visit.

Dear VT travellers,
i need your help: I’ll be in Athen from 21st until 23rd of August and I was looking for a cheap hotel. The cheapest ones that I found were all in Omonia Square or in the nearby streets, but some friends of mine and also some comments on the web say that it’s dangerous , it’s a bad district and it’s not advisable going out in the evening.
Is it true or it is enough to pay attention? Is it worst than the peripheric districts of Milan?
We are 5 people and 3 of us are typical Italian machos!Shall we change hotel or not?

We are scheduled to arrive at Athens airport on 5/21 at 4:15. Doing a land/cruise package thru Trafalgar tours and free airport transfers are included. We are going to buy Metro tickets anyway. I have read that I can buy a Metro ticket at the airport that will include Metro transport into the city center from the airport and city metro/bus/tram x24hr. I'm assuming the airport transfer will be by shuttle or car and its going to be right around rush hr. Will it be faster to take the Metro into the city or use the airport transfer? Our flight home is 5/31 leaving at 7:20am and I'm planning to use the free transfer for that. Thanks for all your time and advice!!

We will be going to Petra, in two weeks time 29th May. As the euro is poor at the moment here in England, would it be better to wait until we get to Lesvos to change cash, or would we get a better rate using ATM machines. We have the type of debit card that does not charge for transactions abroad. Hope someone can advise us, thankyou. J.A. COX.

I have a family trip booked to Kos in July, for myself my partner, her two daughters and a friend.


(so 3 girls, 15, 15 and 10)


the 10 year old is quite disabled. She is a bit unsteady walking and is very obsessive in an autistic like way.




We had booked the Aqua Club, but apparently it has gone out of business, so we have been moved to the "aegean view" It has very mixed reviews on trip advisor, but I think between the lines it will probably suit us (I am a bit wary about reviews from people I have not seen posting here or there as well).




we do wnat to try and get to see some of the island. All the girls will be happy on a nice beach, and wil tolerate some sightseeing, in short bursts. I think we will need to hire a car to do any sightseeing, as any kind of queuing is a bit of a problem for the little one. Anyhting with animals works well. as does anyhting where she can get wet (and not drown)..






so.. any ideas.. and where to look for car hire.. and any commenst about the hotel itself. Thanks.

Has anyone taken a 2 day tour of Meteora from Athens? There are several offered through many different companies. Each includes about 2 hours in Delphi, then the next morning in Meteora.

I know this is not a lot of time in either place, but unfortunately will be in a time crunch so don't have much more than this.

Can anyone offer any reviews of such tours?

We are due to visit Chalkida for a wedding in June and have been booked in to the best western Lucy Chalkis, but wasnt sure if this was ok? Also, our flight back is 4 days after our friends wedding, she is from Chalkida and thinks we shoud stay on there for the rest of our holiday after they go back to the UK but her soon to be husband has seperatly reccomended that he thinks we should spend the rest of our holiday in Athens. Not wanting to cause a argument beween them I was looking for some independant advice please?

In a few weeks I will be arriving in athens at about 10:15 am, and would like to go straight to syros. I notice that there is a ferry from lavrion to syros that leaves lavrion at 2 pm. What would be the fastest way by public transport to get from the airport to the lavrion ferry terminal? It seems pretty easy to get to rafina from the airport, and I wonder if a bus from here continues to lavrion.

My other option would be to take a ferry that leaves from pireaus to syros at 1 pm. Would this be a more reasonable option? Also, would you advise I take the metro or bus 96 to pireaus?

The small print with Auto Europe simply says permission needed prior - any thoughts on trying to island hop with a car - are there reliably car ferries available on my intended route between Mykonos, Naxos, Santorini and Crete? and if yes, expensive?

or a real pain and better to just pick one up here and there on the islands? One complete rental would at least help with not having to commit to dates along the way and the price is not to bad for 10 days with pick up in Thessaloniki and drop off in Crete!

Hi, am inclined to head for Greece in a few days time - looks like I will fly to Thessaloniki and get a rental car to drive to Metorea and a few sights - not a lot of time but want to see that and the scenic route down to Delphi with probably a visit to Corinth and maybe somehow get to MYstra - any other must see suggestions appreciated - was thinking id have the car just for 3 days and drop off at Athens airport and fly to Mykonos or Naxos and then island hop to Crete and fly back from Crete to London.

or should i just fly straight to Mykonos (tho now ive sort of got the want to see Metorea) and see the most i can of the island route which'd include Naxos, Mykonos, Delos, Santorini and a bit of Crete to do the Samaria Gorge if open.
Id hope to see the advantages of going while ?still spring to see wildflowers and maybe snow tip mtns in appropriate places.

but..should i do it to drop the car off at Rafina and catch a ferry down to the islands instead of trying to fly? can i count on driving around in Athens a bit to just park easily and get to the Acropolis and museum and dash off to Rafina? - as id count on a return trip one day to see more of the mainland sights.

Yassou! I've read some great things about the Economy Hotel (Klisthenous 5, near City Hall), but also some bad things about the neighborhood around Omonia station after dark. Is it safe?
