Athens Opinions and suggestions needed on area where to stay
Posted: Sat May 31, 2008 03:20 PM UTC
I will be going to Athens for a few days in September and am looking forward to it (last glorious visit: 1983). I will visit Hydra as well.

Ideally, I'd like to stay within striking distance of Plaka (staying in Plaka itself does not appeal to me, but maybe I am wrong), I want to stay in a lively area, nothing too trendy (I suppose that rules out Kolonaki) just a pleasant, informal area within max. 15 minutes' walk of Plaka.

I'd like the low-down, the unvarnished truth on the following areas from people who know Athens very well:

1) What's Psiri like? (I read it was a former working-class area turned uber-trendy, is that true?)

2) What's Monastiraki like to stay?

3) What's Gazi like?

4) What's Anafiotika like?

I suppose what I'm asking you in a roundabout way is: What is the most pleasant and interesting area in which to stay in Athens close to Plaka?

Athens Accessing the Acropolis
Posted: Tue May 27, 2008 09:39 PM UTC
Reading multiple postings, I hear differing opinions regarding the best way to get to the Acropolis, western or southern access. In viewing the Theatre of Dionysius and Odeon of Herodes Atticus, is one better than the other? How much time should you allot for the Acropolis?
Thank you for your help!

Athens Good music place?
Posted: Tue May 20, 2008 12:10 PM UTC
Hello all!
I´m going to Athens this coming wednesday (yippiee!) I wonder, can anyone give me a tip on some good music-restaurants where they play good (and with good here I mean original, unique) traditional folk-music? I guess every area has its own sound, and maybe the Athens area too? I like it hard-core, not too touristic, if you get my point.
Anything else happening that I shouldn´t miss in Athens the coming week? A festival? A market? A celebration? I wanna know it all!
Thanks!
All the best!

Athens Athens - Omonia district
Posted: Thu May 15, 2008 10:31 AM UTC
Dear VT travellers,
i need your help: I’ll be in Athen from 21st until 23rd of August and I was looking for a cheap hotel. The cheapest ones that I found were all in Omonia Square or in the nearby streets, but some friends of mine and also some comments on the web say that it’s dangerous , it’s a bad district and it’s not advisable going out in the evening.
Is it true or it is enough to pay attention? Is it worst than the peripheric districts of Milan?
We are 5 people and 3 of us are typical Italian machos!Shall we change hotel or not?

Thanks in advance!

Athens From Airport to Divani Palace- Metro vs free transfer
Posted: Thu May 15, 2008 03:57 AM UTC
We are scheduled to arrive at Athens airport on 5/21 at 4:15. Doing a land/cruise package thru Trafalgar tours and free airport transfers are included. We are going to buy Metro tickets anyway. I have read that I can buy a Metro ticket at the airport that will include Metro transport into the city center from the airport and city metro/bus/tram x24hr. I'm assuming the airport transfer will be by shuttle or car and its going to be right around rush hr. Will it be faster to take the Metro into the city or use the airport transfer? Our flight home is 5/31 leaving at 7:20am and I'm planning to use the free transfer for that. Thanks for all your time and advice!!

Athens gettin to lavrion (or piraeus) from athens airport
Posted: Sat May 10, 2008 01:02 PM UTC
In a few weeks I will be arriving in athens at about 10:15 am, and would like to go straight to syros. I notice that there is a ferry from lavrion to syros that leaves lavrion at 2 pm. What would be the fastest way by public transport to get from the airport to the lavrion ferry terminal? It seems pretty easy to get to rafina from the airport, and I wonder if a bus from here continues to lavrion.

My other option would be to take a ferry that leaves from pireaus to syros at 1 pm. Would this be a more reasonable option? Also, would you advise I take the metro or bus 96 to pireaus?

Thank you

Yassou! I've read some great things about the Economy Hotel (Klisthenous 5, near City Hall), but also some bad things about the neighborhood around Omonia station after dark. Is it safe?

Cheers and thanks

Athens Ferries from Athens & between the Islands
Posted: Wed May 7, 2008 10:02 AM UTC
Hello,

I am wondering about prices, times & ports & even if ferries are the right way to go. If you have any advice (for a 1st time traveller!) it would be much appreciated. We are traveling at the end of August this year, hoping to go from Athens to Naxos then Santorini. We are also hoping to fly from Santorini back to London...if there are any suggestions re this that would be great!

Cheers =)

Athens Advice on hotels near Piraeus port
Posted: Sat May 3, 2008 02:48 AM UTC
My husband and I will be taking the ferry from Santorini to Piraeus and arriving quite late- around 1 AM. We fly out of the Athens airport the next day at 11 AM, so will only be spending one night in the city. Our options are:

1. Stay at a hotel near the port and take the metro or taxi to the airport in the morning, or

2. Take a taxi directly to a hotel near the airport at 1 AM and spend the night at an airport hotel.

Option 2 is much more expensive. We would prefer to stay near the port if possible, but only if it is safe to spend the night there and arrive at a local hotel that late. We have never been to Greece, but my experience in other countries (including our own) is that the area by the port is sometimes a little seedy.

Has anyone spent the night down there? If so, any recommendations for a safe, reasonably-priced hotel?

Thank you very much.

Athens how get from airport to Attica Zoological Park
Posted: Mon April 28, 2008 02:07 PM UTC
I've planned my trip to Athens in start of june 2008 (6 days). In last day, our plane return us to home in evening. So we decide to spent our last day in Attica Zoological Park in Spata.
In map I see, where Spata is, but when I searching, how to go there, it's very hard to find, what is the best way, when I using the public transport and not the car.

If I leave my baggage in locker, in airport, then what I must to do, to get the Attica zoo. And how return to airport.
Thanks for answer ...

Athens really cheap hotel/guesthouse
Posted: Sun April 20, 2008 04:17 PM UTC
Hi,

I wondered if anyone can suggest a hotel/guesthouse for me, I need 2 nights accomodation in Athens from 22nd June and was looking at Athens Backpackers but at €25 per night for a dorm bed is expensive and I wondered if for a few more euros if I could get a private room? Am not looking for anything fancy just clean. I have been looking but the only places I have found for my budget is in Omonia and as a single female traveller it would be ok for 1 night but am not sure about 2nights?

Thanks for your help as always!!

Athens Daily Food Budget for Mykonos Island
Posted: Thu April 17, 2008 05:08 AM UTC
Hi there,

Can anyone tell me or give me a rough idea of how much to budget for eating out in Mykonos Island? As a rough guide for lunch just a sandwich/crepe from a cheap cafe or street vendor, and for dinner the cheapest kind of restaurant you can get, pizza places etc?

For instance backpackers going through Europe, how much would you budget for per day on food?

Thanks in advance,
Isabel :o)

Athens Aaccommodation Athens, Santorini & Rhodes Late Sept, to Early October
Posted: Tue April 15, 2008 01:15 AM UTC
We have arranged a stopover in Greece from 28th September to 6th October on our way home to Australia. Intention to see major Athens sights, fly to Santorini for 2 nights, then either fly or take ferry to Rhodes for 3 nights, then fly to Athens for 2 nights prior to catching flight home 4:15pm on 6th October.

We require good 3 star accommodation, clean room and bathroom, most likely need airconditioning as it may be hot, within walking distance of tourist attractions and transport (metro).

In Athens thought we might stay at the Hotel Attalos at 29 Athinas St. Has
anyone stayed at this hotel or can recommend a good hotel, do not mind staying in a small hotel. We attempted to book the Athos Hotel but Bookings.com said no rooms available.

In Santorini we would like a Greek style hotel in town or walking distance, with ocean view. Expect to pay extra for this but as we will be there 2 nights will be worth the extra money to have the view. Will be there 29th & 30th September, leaving for Rhodes morning of 1st.

How many hours is the ferry trip to Rhodes and does it go each day. Is it better to fly and have more time in Rhodes.

Rhodes accommodation, have made a posting in Rhodes Forum , but would appreciate any accommodation recommendations. Have considered City Centre Rhodes Town Hotel, Mediterranean Hotel. Have read in forum about Minos Pension & Roof Garden Lounge but have not followed up. Will be in Rhodes 3 nights returning to Athens by air on the 4th.

Will appreciate all replies.

Athens EARLY MAY WEATHER
Posted: Sun April 13, 2008 09:09 PM UTC
Hi VTers,
We are really excited to be coming to Greece and the islands. We are coming there on May 6 to May 15. First in Athens and then cruising to Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes, Patmos, & Crete afterwards.

We cannot find a site to tell us the weather and HUMIDITY for May 6-15 for Athens and the islands.

Does anyone know a good site or can tell us the approximate temperature & humidity for that time period?

Thank you all for the help everytime we ask any questions!!

Athens Limited Amount of Time in Athens.
Posted: Sun April 13, 2008 12:02 PM UTC
Hi There,

I will be travelling to Athens in October but only as a bit of a stopover between Paris and Mykonos. I arrive in Athens at 3.30pm and then depart the following day at 12.30pm. I then return to Athens 6 days later at 2.30pm and then depart the following day at 8am.
I would like to be able to see at least the Acropolis and get some shopping in. Can anyone suggest a way I can do this as I don't think there will be time to do any tours? It would be great if there were night tours but I am guessing there aren't any.

Thanks :)
