Prague Botel Albatros
Posted: Fri November 6, 2009 08:42 PM UTC
I'm planning to visit Prague in March next year. I've a hotel reservation already however I came across Botel Albatros which offers very reasonable rate. I'm wondering if I should cancel my reservation at Hotel Atlantic and change to this Botel. Has anybody any opinion? I appreciate the fellow travelers' input.
By the way I am a mature woman and will travel alone.

Czech Republic Sumova-
Posted: Fri November 6, 2009 10:18 AM UTC
Hello there-!

We are planning a hiking (with some skiing) trip in the Sumova region (over the new year).
So far it seems quite simple to get to the area from Prague, however, we are unsure which is the best option, bus/train? Which are the best places to use as a base?

Our main problem is accommodation, room, or room with cooking fac.
Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Prague St John of Nepomuk's dog: The creation of a myth
Posted: Fri October 23, 2009 09:38 AM UTC
If you have been to Prague you probably have seen the plaques below the statue og St John og Nepomuk on the Charles Bridge. (see picture on: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e2/John_of_Nepomuk.jpg) People touch both the plaques, and there are different beliefs as to what magic powers they possess. Some say the one on the right can be touched for good luck or you can make a wish, others say that when you touch it you will return to Prague. The plaque on the left depicts a dog. There are various myths connected to this plaque: Touching it means good luck or bad luck, you can make a wish or you can touch it to make sure that the wish you made when you touched the other plaque, is kept a secret.

Now, here's an interesting story concerning the dog plaque:
I visited Prague for the first time in 97. At that time the dog on the left-hand plaque was completely black. Everyone touched St. John , but as far as I could see, no one touched the dog. As a joke I went over to the dog and touched it. My friends did the same and some other tourists saw this, laughed at the joke and touched the dog as well. I said to my friends that when we come back in a couple of years, the dog will be just as shiny as St John. Of course, I didn't believe this myself, but I came back two years later, and the dog was shiny as gold. Now everyone touched both St John and the dog. Coincident?

These myths about good/bad luck must have developed after 97. Does anyone have pictures of the statue from 97-99? Or do you know anythin about this? I would really like to get to the bottom of this.

Cesky Krumlov Linz to Cesky Krumlov
Posted: Mon October 12, 2009 02:00 PM UTC
I am planning on travelling from Hallstatt to Linz and then going to Cesky Krumlov. I have read that the train from Linz to CK takes around 5-6 hours. As for shuttle buses they need to be booked in advance. But as my travel plans are subject to change, I cannot decide on which to book the shuttle. Does anyone know if there is a public bus available from Linz to CK and how much that will cost and how much time it takes? Thanks

Prague First time visitor..... looking for something special
Posted: Sat October 10, 2009 10:30 PM UTC
Our business takes us to Italy frequently and I've been dying to visit Prague for quite some years now.
I've got all the guidebooks, but am looking for something special that isn't touristy and is special.
We've got 5 full days there (although we'll be jet lagged for the first few).
We like art, food, culture, and history.
We already have received recommendations for the 19th century romantic art museum and the military museum.
!something special!

Prague Transport from Airport
Posted: Tue September 29, 2009 09:18 PM UTC
Could someone please tell me HOW I get into the city centre of Prague?

I arrive at the airport on a Saturday morning at 09.05 and have to get to Leonardo Hotel, Karoliny Svetle27, Praque 1.

Am I correct in thinking I pay one price for a bus to take me to a metro? If so, which bus is this - does it terminate at the metro and what stop would I need to get off at the metro?

Thank you.

Prague Prague Airport to Karlovy Vary by bus
Posted: Tue September 29, 2009 01:22 AM UTC
I have gone to the Czech train and bus website (Jizdnirhady) to look at the connections from Prague airport to Karlovy Vary by bus.
I see that the buses run from Florenc bus Terminal located in downtown Prague to KV. At first I thought I'd have to take a bus from the airport to Florenc terminal, and then a second bus from there to KV. But on closer inspection of the connections details, one of the stops listed 20 minutes after it leaves Florenc is "Prague Terminal 1" which looks to be the airport to me. If this is the case, it would obviously make sense that I take the bus from here since I'll already be at the airport, rather than making an extra trip into the city.

Can anyone who may be familiar with this, or with the bus schedules, or who has done it themselves confirm this for me, or is "Prague Terminal 1" referring to some place other than the airport ?

Thank you in advance for your replies.

Prague Christmas Day Mass in English
Posted: Thu September 24, 2009 04:01 PM UTC
Hi,

My husband and me are going to be in Prague for Christmas and being Catholic we would like to attend mass - preferably in English so we can understand it. I've tried looking up some info and it seems that there is an English speaking Mass at St. Thomas church. Does anyone know at what time this would be held on Christmas day please? Also any directions/address to get there from Old Town - Na Porici, Praha 1 would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Prague 1st time visitng Prague HELP :)
Posted: Thu September 17, 2009 09:07 PM UTC
Hello fellow travellers,
Once again I am asking you kind people for advice!
Me and my girlfriend are attending a wedding in Prague the week after next and I have managed to try and get us some time to experience the lovely city.
It looks like we will only have a few days at most to experience the best of Prague unfortunately.
We are stayting at the Mucha hotel Sokolovská 12
186 00 Prague 8, Praha, Czech Republic.
Can anyone recomend some nice bars and restaurants we should visit during our stay?
Also are there any must see places to visit while we are there?
Nice places to view the city as we sip some local drinks would be fabulous if any one could help :)
Given my very limited knowledge of the city I guess places close to our hotel would be advantageous it at all possible.

Thank you all so much

James

Many thanks for reading theis request and any advice is very welcome.

Hi,

My husband and me are considering spending Christmas in Prague from the 24th-29th. How do people celebrate Christmas there? Will there be any festivities outside? Will shops, museums and other places to visit be open if not on Christmas day at least on the following days - Saturday and Sunday?

Many thanks
