Leipzig Now living in Leipzig and looking for a long-term apartment: which area is nice & good value?
Posted: Mon March 13, 2006 08:33 PM UTC
Hello,

I have been living in Leipzig these past 2 months at a university residence for researchers, and must move out soon. I am considering a move, to either a furnished apartment or one with a kitchen already installed. Can anyone make a suggestion as to what part of town is both nice (I'd like to hold on to my hubcaps once I get a car... ;-) ) and good value (not inflated prices like Zentrum, but served by the tram system)?

Best regards,

JME

Leipzig Considering a move to Leipzig: what can you tell me?
Posted: Sun July 31, 2005 06:57 AM UTC
Hello,

I am a researcher, originally from Montreal, Canada, and now living in Tsukuba, Japan. I may have an opportunity in Leipzig, and I would like to find out more about the place.

My brother, who lived in Germany in the past, did not have kind words about the place, and evoked the issue of ethnocentric groups made up disenfranchised youths, but it's possible that he was being unduly alarmist. My wife is Japanese, and I would like to go somewhere where she and I can fit in.

Is it an open-minded, safe place? Is it feasible for us to be comfortable there with just English, until we master a little German?

What is there to do, see and eat? We love food, particularly French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese and Thai. Is there a jazz place? Latin dancing? How is the weather? How is the health system: long waiting periods like Canada, tremendous inequities like the US, or well managed, like Japan's?

Please advise.

Leipzig Aythra
Posted: Fri June 24, 2005 05:33 AM UTC
I've read that they've found the world's oldest civilization at Aythra, just out of Leipzig. Can anyone tell me whether there are any dig sites there that are open to tourists yet, and whether there's anything worth seeing? (I've been to some decent archaeology attractions in Switzerland and Greece, so I'm just wondering...)

Leipzig Need advice on hotel / nightlife
Posted: Wed June 22, 2005 07:47 PM UTC
Hallo!

Does anyone have any suggestions on:

1. A relatively cheap, central hotel which is quite near the hauptbahnhof? Something that would cost around 45-60 euros per night.

2. What are some of the best areas to go to in terms of nightlife for the 25 - 35 age bracket?

Danke!

Leipzig 2 days enough for Leipzig?
Posted: Sun February 20, 2005 03:40 PM UTC
Hi everybody,

thinking about travel plans for the next months I came up with the idea to visit Leipzig. It would be around Easter time and I would have 2 days (1 night), Friday and Saturday. Friday being a holiday (Good Friday) with maybe a few things closed - would it be worthwhile driving there for two days? Is it enough to get an idea about the importance of that city with regard to history, music, literature etc?

Thanks for your help.

Leipzig Two-Way Radio Rental in Leipzig
Posted: Thu January 27, 2005 09:15 PM UTC
I am interested in renting four 2-way radios for use in Leipzig and would prefer units that have a range of at least 6 miles.

If I can't find any to rent, I'd be happy to buy them [if they aren't too costly]

I would prefer to set up the details from the US before I leave for Germany, so I don't have to worry about it once I'm there.

And before you suggest it, we do not want cellular phones. As I understand it security will no longer let people bring cell phones into the venues during Treffen.

Anyone got any tips?

Leipzig English in Leipzig
Posted: Tue January 25, 2005 09:34 PM UTC
I will be travelling to Leipzig in May and a freind who has been there once and does not speak German claims she had quite a difficult time conversing with shopkeepers, etc. I'm afraid she was just afraid to try speaking to someone in a foreign country [this was her first trip abroad].

Although I don't speak German, I do speak Italian and some French [although I suspect neither will help me much]. So I'm wondering if it will be very difficult for me to get by alone without speaking the language.

Thanks!

Leipzig Leipzig to Altenburg
Posted: Thu August 5, 2004 03:38 PM UTC
Hello, new friends,

We're spending one day in Leipzig before traveling to Posterstein for my son's wedding.

1) Anyone know of a good 1/2 day bus tour we can take? Our hotel is right near the zoo where I want to visit my "cousins", and I want to pay homage to Papa Bach.

2) How do we get from Leipzig to Posterstein? Altenburg may be close enough, but I'm having trouble finding the right site to get a train schedule.

Thanks all, for your help.

Leipzig What to do in only 3-4 hours
Posted: Tue June 15, 2004 01:57 PM UTC
My husband and I are travelling to Leipzig, Vienna, and Venice with a choral tour next month. Most of our days are scheduled with the tour group, but we have a few mornings and afternoons free. We have one free morning in Leipzig; one afternoon, one morning, and one evening free in Vienna; and one afternon and two evenings free in Venice.

In Leipzig, we're already scheduled for a tour of the city, focusing on Bach, we'll hear the Thomanerchor, and eat at the Auerbach Keller.

In Vienna, we're scheduled for a city tour including the Musikverein and State Opera, Eisenstadt, Esterhazy Palace, home of Liszt, and we're singing at the Bergkirche and St. Stephensdom.

In Venice, we're scheduled for a tour of the city including Doge's Palace, and we're singing in San Marco.

Do you have suggestions for things we could do that aren't already scheduled in the short periods of free time we have? Maybe something that's sports related, or at least not a museum?

Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated!
