Could you please give me your opinions on the folowing: 1. What will the weather be like during December 2. Is it busy or a ghost town in Crete at Christmas 3. Any reviews on the Blue Palace Hotel (Spa) 4. Any personal favourite places. e.g. Hotels & Restaurants Really appreciate your help. Many thanks Gary |

| Crete Island | Plane, Bus connections Posted: Sun April 27, 2008 07:03 PM UTC
I will be flying to Chania in early June and I want to get to Rethymno. Is there a bus fromt the airport directly to Rethymno or do I have to switch in Chania?
I have looked at the KTEL site so please do not post it up again. I can figure it out but I'm hoping this is a faster route |

| Crete Island | Iraklion to Chania Posted: Sun April 27, 2008 06:31 PM UTC
On a Monday in mid-May, we need to do the following:
1) Starting from Iraklion, we will take a LOCAL bus to visit the Palace of Knossos. - How long usually would it take to tour the whole site? - When does it open in the morning? - Which LOCAL bus we should take to get there from Chronaki Street? - How can we get to the Iraklion's KTEL bus station after visiting the Knossos? 2) Then, take KTEL bus from Iraklion to Chania via Rethymnon I saw separate schedules for the two legs: Iraklion -> Rethymnon, then Rethymnon -> Chania. - According to the schedule, e.g., a bus would arrive at Rethymnon at 17:00, then right at that time, another leaves Rathymnon to Chania. Is this a seemless transfer (i.e., without changing bus) or one has to change bus (means, if the first leg is delayed, one has to wait for about an hour for the next bus to Chania)? - Is there any direct bus between Iraklion and Chania? - Is there any luggage locker at the KTEL bus station (so that we can leave our luggage there prioir to visit the Knossos, then go straight to the bus station after)? - How far is the KTEL station from Chronaki Street (in case we have to leave the luggage in the hotel that morning)? Thanks in advance for any help! |

| Crete Island | transport to plakais Posted: Tue March 11, 2008 09:29 PM UTC
Hi
I'm hopefully heading to sunny crete sometime mid may (thinking 9th) for a week. I'm flying into herkalion and want to get down to plakais. The flights i've looked at will have me in herkalion about 1.30. Is there bus (s) I can catch to get me to plakais that day or will i need to stay somehwhere overnight? Apparently the bus has a winter / summer schedule and I'm not sure which one it will be on! Also does anyone know the youth hostel in plakais? I was going to base myself there. i want to do some trekking, swimming and sunbathing. Am i going to the right place?? Thanks in advance! Kitty |

| Crete Island | Lest We Forget Posted: Sun February 24, 2008 07:33 PM UTC
At 73 yrs. I have travelled world seeking out lost, forgotten and remote war graves at 120 locations. I am planning a pilgrimage with a difference for Sept.2008. I aim to visit the small towns/villages in CRETE where the Cretans paid such a high price for me to have the FREEDOM to travel as I do. My family and I were war victims in Liverpool and I want to take my pipes to Crete to say not only "WE WILL REMEMBER THEM" but "THANK YOU" I have been to the big military war cemeteries in Crete but now feel it is time to REMEMBER the ordinary people like myself who once shouted to the winds of Crete "NO SURRENDER". The story of the courage of these people is fasting fading from websites and many feel it is better to forget even if it is for the sake of not upsetting 'some' tourists. FORGET ? Me ? Never. Perhaps the next generation may learn to forgive ???????
My wife and I will be travelling around Crete for four weeks staying where God lands us. Can anyone tell me of four bases from which I can reach the mountain/coastal-towns/villages which faced the wrath of the invaders in 1941. My tibutes will take the form of simply playing my bagpipe in tribute, placing a smnall wreath and bowing my head in a silent prayer. No Generals, no politicians and certainly no speeches. Should any wish to join us they are welcome but I do ask that none try to gain 'brownie points' from what will be a low frofile act of remebrance. Bill Jenkins Liverpool UK |

| Crete Island | South Western Walking Trail Posted: Tue January 29, 2008 05:40 AM UTC
I can't recall where it fully starts, but it ends up in Elafonissi, the trail is about 3 days long (the part I'm trying to recall anyway), there are many ruins along the way and some amazing towns and trails, most of which you can only get to on foot of by boat. i know a section of the trip is dangerous and they recommend a boat for a general section of this part. But the rest is fine, we are very interested in this for our Crete stay and want to experience it.
I will find out the name of the town we are thinking of starting it, its a fishing village on the very south coast (of course)..... I'll find that out later, it was in a book I was reading. I'm wondering if anyone here has done this walk, how hard is it, how long is it and do we need a guide and is it easy to follow the trail? |

| Crete Island | Sorry, just want to clarify Posted: Sat January 19, 2008 03:45 AM UTC
I'll be in Crete for 4 days in June (5-9). The first 2 days in Rethymno, the other 2 in Heraklio. I then board a ferry from Heraklio to Thira. Except.... that no matter what line I search I can not find a ferry that travels from Heraklio to Thira. Does anyone one how often they would run or even IF they run? I can't rememebr if I asked this before... I'm a sick kid right now and the only thing that makes me feel any better is thinking about warm sands and refreshing waters...

| Crete Island | Where to stay for Greek Easter Posted: Mon January 14, 2008 01:59 PM UTC
Hello to all
I would love some help about where to stay for Greek Easter. It will be a part of a 3 week trip to Greece for my wife and I with about 10 of those days being in Crete. I would like to find a place in Western or Central Crete. My concern is that if we choose a small town there will be nothing (including restaurants?) open. On the other hand a smaller place may give us a more unique Easter experience...Generally speaking we are not party goers or beach dwellers particularly. We are going to Greece (Crete) to experience the food, beauty, culture and hitory of the place. You have been most helful on htis forum before. Thank you |

| Crete Island | Accomodation: Chania and plus Iraklion? Posted: Sun November 25, 2007 04:17 PM UTC
We are planning to arrive H/Iraklion by boat from Santorini (mid-May). Then take a bus to base in Chania for 4 nights (thanks to everyone's suggestion). At the end, we will fly to ATH from Chania.
However, we would love to visit both Knosos and Iraklion in the east (in addition to Chania and Samaria Gorge etc at the west). With the distance between them and Chania (120km? We do NOT plan to rent a car), would it be a good idea for us to stay in Iraklion for the first 2 nights, then move onto Chania for another 2? Or, if we still base at Chania, is there any fast bus to take to Iraklion/Knosos? What is the frequency of such bus and how long will it take one-way? Thanks in advance for any tip! |

| Crete Island | Crete in May or June Posted: Tue November 20, 2007 09:09 AM UTC
We are planning to spend about two weeks in Crete in May or June. My friends who have visited the Island in April said that it was too cold to swim at that time. I am wondering we can swim in the sea around May (I guess June is definitely possible.) One thing is that I am not a big fan of polar bear swimming and really hates swimming in the cold water. What will be the water temperature around the middle or end of May?
Another thing is about accommodation. We want to stay in a studio with a kitchenette and swimming pool private or common use around Chania area. Where can we start our searching? Any good internet website for reservation? |

Been trying to find this on guidebooks and on websites without success. We are in Crete from Tuesday 23rd October to Tuesday 30th October. Is Samaria gorge still open for walkers? Some of the guidebooks say it closes mid-October.
