It's that time of year again where I need some help and advice from you fellow Virtual tourist's.

Has anyone been snorkelling in Crete, if so what region, and any recommendations to hotels near by for this would be fantastic.

Also if you know of other area's in Europe where the snorkelling is good that would be great. Hey, no need to say Egypt as I know it's Amazing there.

Thanks in advance for your help :O)

Crete Island Crete on a budget
Posted: Thu June 25, 2009 11:14 AM UTC
We will be in Crete for one week from 3 July-10 July and we will be based in Elounda. We are on a budget holiday but I understand Elounda is a upmarket part of the island, is this true and will we be able to eat at modestly priced restaurants?

My research suggests that it is inexpensive to eat out in Crete but I would imagine there are places that cater just for the tourists so will be more expensive. I would like to know where the locals eat out and what places nearby they recommend we visit?

We are interested in the culture of Crete/greece so we would like the opportunity to experience local history, festivals and food. Of course, we are aware that popular landmarks will have tourists but what would the locals suggest that we do to get the most from Crete?

Crete Island Looking for a great base in Crete
Posted: Sat June 6, 2009 12:05 AM UTC
We will bf and me) bespending a week in Crete August 18 - 26, arriving by boat from Antiparos. I understand the west part of the island is really beautiful, but I am open to the east. What I am looking for is a beach or port town, that is charming like antiparos,or sifnos, or symi, that is not really, really big (I think Heraklion would be awful, and maybe Chania to big also?) which is proximate to other great towns, beaches, ruins, and monuments. I don't want to have to drive too too much. Any suggestions?

Crete Island Crete Island by scooter.....
Posted: Fri May 29, 2009 07:05 PM UTC
Hello All,

just looking for some advice on travelling across crete Island by 50 cc scooter. It's my first time to crete at the end of June and I have booked a hotel in Malia - Turns out this was not the best choice for nice beaches so I plan to try to find them on two wheels.....

I basically wanted to get away from the beaches near malia which will no doubt be over-crowded and try to find some thing a little nicer.

The beaches in the south west look incredible and I would love to get to them but would that be a realistic journey on a small scooter? Dont want to be riding all day either.

I should be able to get to the beaches on the east cost (aghios nikolaos for example) as these are only 10 km away however there is no way to tell what the roads are like. This would mean taking the motorway and not sure how that will go with a tiny scooter.

Anyone else here done the island by scooter?

Any advice on this would be great.

thanks a lot!

Crete Island Ferry

Which is more feasible. The overnight ferry, departing at 10:00pm at arriving at 5:00am; the daytime ferry departing at 2:30pm and arriving at 7:00pm? Or, would one suggest flying over land travel.

Crete Island Looking for ideas for studios Gerani area early June
Posted: Thu May 14, 2009 06:52 PM UTC
Hi everyone.

We are coming to Crete in about three weeks time and are looking for a studio in the Gerani area. It seems to be nice and quiet, but with good links to Chania and Rethymno.

I did have a wonderful site but needless to say, I forgot to bookmark it!

Any ideas more than welcome; our needs are simple, close to the beach, shops, tavernas and the bus and a swimming pool for the really lazy days would be nice. Our budget is around 30-40 Euros a night and we will be staying about six nights.

Any suggestions gratefully received as I 6think we need to think about booking quite soon (we don't arrive until very late at night, so do not want to leave it to chance).

Many thanks in advance.

Crete Island Quiet and pretty places on the southside for painting
Posted: Thu April 16, 2009 01:39 PM UTC
Hi all,

Do you have any suggestions on a picturesque area on the southside where a few painters would find inspiration for a few weeks?
If it was in the central area of the island (south-ish of Rethymno) it would allow them to get flights to either of the airports and still not be too far from the destination.

Now.. longer story... I have been backpacking the Greek islands quite a few summers, but I always stayed away from tourist-magnets like Rhodes, Cyprus, Crete and Santorini to mention a few...
Business (go figure) brought me to Crete a few years back, and I got the chance to spend a few days on my own... I ended up driving across the island on the north side, then south... and I loved it.

However, my years of fairly loud disapproval of Crete as a sensible place to visit rubbed off on my mother. She told me a little while that she was going to Greece this year to paint with some friends. When I suggested Crete as a good destination - she instantly discarded the alternative :), and I have to find a way to convince her.

One of the main reasons for my suggestion is the fact that there are multiple airports and much easier to catch a low fare flight into the island (flying in from Oslo).
Additionally, they are multiple people arriving and leaving at different dates as well.. which is easier on an island with multiple flights a week.

In regards to what's picturesque, anything goes. I just have to make sure I don't send them off to a desert or something :)). My mother (and all the rest of us) love the true Greece, and we keep looking for it everywhere we go.
She is totally obsessed with colourful flowers as well as colourful people and boats :). She's probably done with painting little white and blue churches though - if you get my idea.

So.. if you're still with me - thanks for your time and I appreciate any suggestions and comments.

Rgds,
Ørjan

Crete Island Matala in Crete
Posted: Wed April 8, 2009 07:53 PM UTC
Hi travelers...! I will be visiting Crete in just about two weeks! I'm trying to figure out where exactly to visit (we will only have about a week there). We want to visit Chania, but also get a chance to see some of the less developed areas on the South coast. I've been reading about Matala...anything you can tell me about this place? Is it possible to reach using public transportation? Worth the visit? Thanks for your commments...!

Crete Island Samarian Gorge Opening
Posted: Mon February 16, 2009 09:25 AM UTC
Hi, me again :) I had another question-- I really had wanted to do the Samarian Gorge while in Crete, and I've read varying information about when it actually opens for the season (mid-April to May, depending on the weather)-- I'll be going the week of April 20th, so I'm worried it wont be open. Is there any way to find out ahead of time, or is it very last minute? And, if it is closed, can you recommend other hiking areas that would be enjoyable (and challenging)? Do you have any favorites?? Thanks!
