Tunis Dining in Tunis

I'll be in Tunis next week for a EuroMed meeting. The hotel will be very comfortable but I fancy escaping one evening to eat somewhere else. Can anyone recommend a restaurant in Tunis?

Tunisia One Week in Tunisia!
Posted: Sat October 24, 2009 10:32 PM UTC
We are traveling to Tunisia for one week. How can I maximize my visit there? What is a good place to stay in Tunis? I'm thinking we will spend 3 nights in Tunis and 4 nights elsewhere - but where? There are SO many choices. We like beach/pool, museums, archaelogy (El Jem). Is it easy to get around? Should we rent a car? Is it convenient to stay in, say, Hammamet and get to Tunis or better to stay in center city? Is it easy/fast to get from Tunis to Djerba? Or Mahdia? Or Monastir?

Tunisia EL KANTAOUI, EL MOURADI CLUB HOTEL
Posted: Fri October 23, 2009 04:30 PM UTC
Just booked for 7 days at Christmas. Do not have a clue about Tunisia, not a thing. Any advise would be helpful. Just two questions really, what weather to expect and is it true it is better to take pound coins for tipping. And that is the full total of my knowledge of Tunisia. Any advice would be helpful, thanks

Tunis One day in port: guide or on our own?
Posted: Tue October 13, 2009 05:46 PM UTC
I've been reading through the threads and have gotten some great information, so thanks to all those who have asked and answered before.

We'll be on a cruise, in port from 8:30 to 4:00 in late April. It will be myself and two children (girl 15, boy 11) who are very interested in history and culture. I have minimal knowledge of Arabic, currently taking a course two hours a week. The children want to see Carthage and the Medina, and eat "real" Tunisian food. They're not picky eaters, and adapt well to new environments.

Would it be better to hire a private tour operator before arriving in Tunis? Any recommendations for one? I've read people find taxi drivers at port to take them around, but am curious as to what the going rate for a trip to Carthage then back into old city would be. For those experienced travelers and residents, which would be the better choice for a woman with her two children-tour or taxi/on our own? We're not interested in doing much shopping, or doing the ship's tour.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Tunisia TIPPING IN TUNISIA
Posted: Sun October 4, 2009 01:17 PM UTC
Please can you advise on how much we should tip a taxi driver. We have pre-booked a car to take us from Tunis airport to our hotel in Gammarth.

Also, what should we tip porters in the hotel for dealing with our luggage?

Tunisia Local Tour among Tozeur, Douz and Matmata
Posted: Sun September 27, 2009 07:56 AM UTC
Hi all,

An individaul planning to go to Tozeur to visit the oases, then go to Douz by public transportation via Kebili and join a local tour/book a guide by 4W to take me to the south of the desert (over night in the desert) all the way to Ksar Ghilane, drop me off in Matmata. Not sure if they only do round trip back to Douz. Any independent travellers have done a similar trip please share your experience. How much do they charge and when and where did you make the booking? Thanks in advance for your advice.

cheers,

Tunisia Tunisia in 2 weeks by solo-any advice
Posted: Sat September 19, 2009 03:27 AM UTC
Hi all,

A few more question for getting around Tunisia in mid-Oct:

1. for a woman traveller with one piece of hand carry luggage, what is the best option (train or bus?) to go between a) Tunis and Sousse and b) Sousse to Douz. Do I need to make reservation for the seat? Is the price fixed or I have to bargain?!

2. Is it safe for a solo woman traveller to join the local tour to visit the Sahara from Tozeur? and from Douz to Ksar Ghilane? If not, what is the better option? Woud it be better to book the tours from the local tourist offices? Is it safe to book the tours from the local hotels and if yes, do I need to bargain?!

3. Here's my draft itinerary. Would like to ask for any suggestion/comments - all by louage/long distance bus/train. Is it too aggressive or any area that can be skipped? Any trap or danger travlling among these areas?
Day 1-3: Tunis, Carthage, Sidi Bou Said
Day 4-6: Kairuouan, Sousse, Mahdia, Kairuouan
Day 7-9: Kebili, Tozuer, and the salt lake
Day 10 - 12: Douz, Ksar Ghilane, Gabes
Day 13 - 14: Gabes, Matmata, Medenine, Tataouine

Thanks a lot!

Tunisia Tunisia in 2 weeks by public transportation-any advice?
Posted: Thu September 17, 2009 06:15 PM UTC
Hi all,

I am planning a solo trip to Tunisia in mid-Oct for 2 to 3 weeks by public transportation. Have been to Turkey & Morocco all by myself. Is it safe for a solo womon traveller to join the local tour to Tozeur or from Douz to Ksar Ghilane? Would I expose myself to unnecessary hazzle if I just book the local tour from the hotel there? Any experience or advice to share?

Is two weeks too much given I don't fancy beaches and seaside resorts?

Thanks!

Sousse Travel by train
Posted: Wed September 9, 2009 07:51 AM UTC
Dear All,

I am supposed to fly to Sousse this weekend.
Definetelly I don't want to miss my chance to travel a bit and visit
couple of another cities in Tunisia.
As I understood, the train connection between Sousse and e.g. Tunis,
Mahdia, Stax is very good and flexible.

Is it really so?
Can I really travel e.g. to Tunis city and come back in several hours?

Please let me know how secure is to travel there by train?
Is there is any recommended dress code?

Any other related advices are welcome as well.

Thank you.

Tunisia Holiday alone!!!
Posted: Mon July 13, 2009 12:26 AM UTC
Hello, I am a single female looking to travel to Tunisia on either July 22nd or July 26th for 7 nights. I have the choice of not going on holiday or going alone since my friend had to pull out at the last minute. Now, I dont mind travelling alone but if there is anybody there during these dates and staying in the Port el Kantoui area (possibly Mouradi Palm Marina or Abou Soffiane) would you like to meet up and keep me company for a bit? I'll probably feel more comfortable when I get there it is just the thought of being alone in restaurants etc that fills me with dread!! Karenx
