Tourist visa to Sudan Posted: Mon August 24, 2009 07:12 PM UTC
Hi, I am a U.S. citizen and am interested in getting a tourist visa to Sudan to visit my boyfriend, who is currently living in Khartoum. I am currently living in the U.S., but will be working in Addis Ababa for a few months later in the year. I was wondering how likely is it that the Sudanese embassy will grant a tourist visa to an American and if it would be better to try to get the visa from the U.S. or from Addis. Also, what's the process for the letter of invitation? Does my boyfriend need to submit the LOI to the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and get the official invitation from the Ministry before I submit the visa application to the Sudanese embassy? Thanks.

Prince Hotel Khartoum Posted: Mon May 18, 2009 09:24 AM UTC
Hi there,
I'm travelling to Khartoum soon to work for a few days. My company has booked me into the Prince Hotel. Can anybody tell me anything about this hotel or direct me to its website please? I can't seem to find anything online about this hotel and my company usually book employees into the Rotana Hotel so as none of my colleagues have stayed in the Prince hotel before I'm anxious to find info about it.
Thanks in advance!

Accommodation Shendi Posted: Fri February 27, 2009 06:12 PM UTC
Hi
My boyfriend is in Shendi for about 2 months for PhD research and I am trying to help him find a place to stay. The hospice that was recommended was really bad but he does need something cheap. Maybe a paying guest situation with a family or something?
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks,

Suand travel -safety Posted: Sun December 7, 2008 03:26 PM UTC
I am thinking about a short trip from Sudan from Dubai sometime in March or April. I would only be for 5-6 days and I would most likely stick to Khartoum, with a side trip to Meroe and vicinity.
I essentially have two questions :
1) Safety : On various websites you reed a lot about rebel attacks, unrest etc. I.e. : How safe is Sudan at the moment (excluding the south & Darfur) ?
2) Permits : I read you need a permit to visit archelogical sites. How long does this take to arrange ? And : Are travel permits necessary for travel outside of Khartoum (i.e. to Meroe) ? The various foreign office sites contract themselves on this. Some say yes, some say it is only necessary for travel to the west & south.
Thank you,
George

Travelling to Sudan before Christmas Posted: Tue December 2, 2008 11:53 PM UTC
Hey everyone
Well the plan is for me to travel to Sudan Dec 23. I am a sudanese canadian but I've never been to sudan. I'll be staying in Khartoum for 2 weeks. Now from all the different websites I've read, travelling to Sudan, even Khartoum, is not very safe. Also, I'll be visiting my dad, who said not to worry about the visa, and that he would get me a counter visa from a travelling agent
Anyone been through this procedss before or have any advice? Only 2 weeks and a bit before my trip!

Yet another visa & ferry question Posted: Thu November 27, 2008 01:38 PM UTC
So I heard from someone that got their Sudan visa in Cairo that she didn't need a letter of introduction. This likely has something to do with her having Egyptian Residence. I have Jordanian Residencey (we're both US citizens), is it naive of me to expect similar luck? If I can avoid the hassle and money of getting a LOI, I'd really like it.
Also, taking a look at this thread http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?messageID=14874286
it looks like the ferry has moved from Monday to Saturday. Can anyone confirm this? I tried to register and post on the Thorn Tree, but it doesn't seem to want to let me.
Thanks,
Nick

Any tourist-oriented things to do in Juba? Posted: Fri November 14, 2008 07:35 AM UTC
I'm transiting through Juba next week and have business elsewhere in Southern Sudan, but while I'm transiting, I have a half day to be a tourist, if this is possible in Juba. Is there anything of interest to see in the city - any monuments or historical sites? Or anything else I should do (I don't plan to do any work in Juba and don't want to see work-oriented places like the UN compound or something like that).

Getting kind of nervous... Posted: Wed November 12, 2008 03:04 PM UTC
So, I've been planning my december Sudan/Ethiopia trip, and I have to say I'm getting more and more unsure whether or not it's a good idea. The latest travel warning is a real ***-show ( http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_934.html ). My main travel destinations are along the path from Wadi Halfa to Khartoum, inshaallah Kasala, and the Gederaf border crossing to Ehiopia.
The travel warning says that all travel in Sudan is a really bad idea right now, but they say that about a lot of places. Certainly, the excecuted Chinese workers in Kordofan don't make me feel to good. I was hoping I could get a sense from people who either are currently in Sudan, or can get in contact with people currently in Sudan, or just have good knowledge, what the situation is like. I really want to go, but not if it's just too stupid.
For what it's worth, I'm a kind of scrawny white guy, and I'd be traveling with a five foot blonde girl.
Thanks,
Nick

visiting Khartoum Posted: Mon November 3, 2008 12:06 PM UTC
Dear
I'm planning to visit Khartoum next month for around one week. My family will join; I have two kids 3 & 6 years old.
Please advice about good hotels and places to visit.
Is it easy to rent a car and drive in Khartoum or it's better to use public transportation?
Finally, I heard that Khartoum is expensive, but how expensive it is?
Thanks in advance

Bringing dog to Khartoum Posted: Thu September 4, 2008 09:24 PM UTC
Hi,
I am planning to move to Khartoum for a year in October and am going to bring my dog with me. I have been to Sudan before so I know the general situation but wonder if anybody could share with me his/her recent experience -- stuff like what happens at the Khartoum airport, what they ask for, what surprises could await me?
Many thanks for help and all the best,
A

3 weeks to spend in Sudan/Ethiopia Posted: Mon August 11, 2008 04:16 AM UTC
I am an American student, studying for the 2008 fall semester in Jordan learning Arabic. A friend of mine is studying in Cairo, so hopefully between the two of us we'll have some handle of Arabic. We were planning on meeting up when our programs end in Cairo, and heading South.
So, those of you that know the area well, what's a good way to spend the time?
My research has found this ferry from Aswan into Wadi Haifa, which is always described as 'weekly,' but which day of the week? I'd like to get my Sudan visa here in the states, but I ship out to Jordan in a week or so, so I can't afford to mail my passport to new york. How tough is it to get a visa to go from Sudan to Ethiopia? Also, how feasible is it to get a ferry from Port Sudan to Sinai?
So I guess my three main questions are:
1. Given three weeks to play around with, what are the main places to go in Southern Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia (and is it even worth trying for Ethiopia, or should I just stick to Egypt and Sudan)?
2. What's the best way to go about getting visas?
3. Should I plan on just retracing my steps to get back to Cairo, or can I go from Ethiopia to Port Sudan, and get a ferry to Egypt?
Thank you so much,
Nick

Anybody can help ? Posted: Mon May 26, 2008 10:18 AM UTC
I am living in Philippines as a foreigner. Just today a local lady asked for my help, because "I know many foreigners", but unfortunately I know nobody in Sudan.
Her close friend, a Filipino lady, is working in Khartoum, Sudan, as a house helper. She is in trouble. She is for long time locked in a room, sometimes with no food, no payment, and she wants to come back home, but she is so desperate, thinking even about suicide. Philippines do not have an embassy or consulate in Sudan. Do you have any idea how we can proceed with this ? Any local organization that can help ?
Thanks

travel with kids to Sudan Posted: Thu April 17, 2008 02:00 AM UTC
Can anyone offer some advice on traveling and living in Khartoum with kids? ie. what to bring, what's available in the baby/child needs departments, etc. Also wondering whether mosquito nets are available to buy in Khartoum or is it best to bring them? And, what sort of electrical plugs are used in Khartoum?
