How Long To Spend In Cape Town& Whether To Fly To Kruger National Park Posted: Fri September 19, 2008 02:13 PM UTC
We're currently working on the principal of visiting Cape Town and allocating 5-7 days to do Table Mountain, Robben Island, Cape Peninsula (both The Point & Cape of Good Hope), Simonstown, Route 62 and Franschoek Valley, as well as maybe Hermanus.
The question after this is whether we fly internally to Kruger National Park (neither of us drive) and spend 1-2 nights there or whether we just stay and go to Aquila Game Reserve for 1-2 nights?
I think in total we are looking for around 8-10 nights in South Africa, so bearing in mind these requirements what would people suggest?
Is it worth the hassle going all the way to Kruger by plane or is the Game Reserve a more sensible option? Are we allowing enough time to do the other stuff around Cape Town?
Thanks,
Jeff

Cape Town - Time of year weather - Scuba Diving - and the Strand ? Posted: Sat September 6, 2008 08:56 PM UTC
We are trying to decide the best (weather wise) months to go to BOTH Kruger Park and the onto Cape Town. Keep in mind we live in Arizona and would prefer to get out of our hot weather (June-Sept)
In Cape Town it looks like we can stay at the Strand Pavilion, which looks like it is a nice bay area ... Is this a good area to stay or is it better on the western side (Atlantic) or farther east on the Indian Ocean?
Any suggestions on scuba diving locations and companies.
Thanks Richard

Driving from Kruger Park to Cape Town Posted: Fri September 5, 2008 08:57 PM UTC
How long in distance and time is it to drive from Kruger to Cape Town? Is there a coastal road to take or only direct roads through Johannesburg? We are trying to find a scenic drive. Thanks.
Also we are staying at a place that is about 90 minutes north up the coast from C'Town but we could change that to sty closer to C'Town. We are not into the night life and more into the beach, diving, relaxing. And any good dive locations to recommend.
Thanks for any suggestions

Hello everyone! I have a question... My brother is having a vacation in South Africa, Cape Town in September. We are trying to figure out where he could stay for less. Can anybody advise us some nice hotels which offer discounts. Some kind of discounted family packages or anything cheaper than normal.

Shark diving, whale watching and wildlife ranch in July 2009 Posted: Sun August 17, 2008 05:31 PM UTC
Hello!
My partner and I are planning to go to Cape Town in July next year. Our main focus in CT are shark diving, whale watching and Cango Wildlife Ranch. We've chosen to go in July because it's supposed to be whale season and also because we are going to Serengeti in Tanzania to hopefully catch the Great Migration. We're still not sure if it is absolutely the best time to go. Here are our concerns which we hope fellow VTers can offer some advice on:
1) Weather: Some people have told us that winter in Cape Town is mild but I've read some posts that say that it can be cold and rainy. Perhaps someone in Cape Town can give me a better idea of an average July weather?
2)Oudtshoorn: During our online research, we came across this place called Cango Wildlife ranch in Oudtshoorn. Does anyone know how far Oudtshoorn is by car from Cape Town?
3)Car rental: We're thinking of hiring a car to drive around....any recommendations of reasonably priced and reliable car rentals? It's our first time in Africa...how are the road / highway condition from Cape Town to Hermanus / Oudtshoorn? Is it ok to rent a sedan car or is a 4x4 better?
Thanks in advance.

wisiting Cape town for the first time Posted: Wed August 13, 2008 09:47 AM UTC
Hi there,
Four of us are going to Cape Town for a 10 day stay, two of us will be attending a conference from August 25th to August 30th, which means only the afternoon are free in that period. The weekends before and at the end of the conference are free though.
We will be arriving in the morning of August 21st and are planning to spend that day sightseeing to get an overlook of the city, Sunday 23rd will be spend on a bicycle tour in Stellenbosch.
Our two wifes will be spending the days off and are wondering what to do during daytime (except shopping of course) :-)
Do anyone have any suggestions?
By the way, Table mountain, Robben Island, and the cape point are posts on the program for the four of us the last weekend (Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st of August).
Any suggestions would be appreciated

Driving in Cape Town Posted: Tue August 12, 2008 08:58 PM UTC
My girlfriend and I are considering a trip to Cape Town in October, followed by going on Safari and onto Port Elizabeth.
Neither of us drive, or at least would drive abroad, can we still do stuff without being ripped off in getting about?
Also, is Cape Town safe? We've been to places like Thailand, Morocco and San Francisco, so are used to hustle and bustle and a bit of crime, but none of them had 'no go areas'.

Robben Island Posted: Thu July 24, 2008 03:53 PM UTC
I've been trying, unsuccessfully, to get specific information as to how to book a trip to Robben Island in advance of arriving in Cape Town (preferrably by email). I also want to know if the cost of a round trip ticket to the island includes a tour. There are apparently a number of tour companies that will prearrange this kind of trip but they seem very expensive. Is it possible to visit the island without booking with a tour company? If so, how?

Table Mountain and Robben Island Posted: Tue July 22, 2008 03:05 AM UTC
I will be visiting Cape Town in November and want to pre-book trips to both Table Mountain and Robben Island. I am trying to find out if I need to do these trips on a tour or if I can just go by myself. What's the difference - in cost and in fact - on a tour vs. going alone? If I can go without a tour, can I reserve tickets from the U.S. for the date and time that I want? If so, how?

Hello friends of Cape Town,
Ive also got a question for a change :)
I have just reserved a weekend in on of the private chalets in "the bath" in Citrusdal. I havent been there for ca 5 years. I had a look at the website and the place seems to have changed completely...much bigger, more commercialized.
Has anyone been there lately and can tell me what its like?
Much appreciated!

Safety for Asian travellers Posted: Wed July 2, 2008 04:39 PM UTC
Hi, I plan to do a self drive from Cape town to a game reserve near Port Elizabeth, overnighting in Oudtshoorn, Knysna & Storms River along the way. I will travelling with my wife and 6 year old boy.
We are Chinese so can be easily identified as tourists. The fact that we are Chinese and travelling with a young child make us obvious targets. We have been hearing lots of horror stories about crimes in South Africa (Cape town included).
Any opinions on safety in Cape Town, Oudtshoorn and along garden route would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The old usual Accommodation problem....! Posted: Fri June 27, 2008 09:20 AM UTC
Coming out at Christmas and can't decide best location to stay....
we do like nice clean pref sort of "modern" rooms...not sure whether to go Waterfront or Camps Bay...or is it round "Kloof street??"..
Looking to spend around £150ish a night....
We like to go out to bars/restaurants....but not too "stuffy"...
also quite like hotels with good facilities and a little pampering...I'm not sure about smaller hotels as we are not "big" on quiet/intimate hotels but everyone seems to rave about the boutique style ones...
We intend to have a car and go out for some days but also like a bit of relax round the pool.....have looked at Westin/Commodore out of the "bigger" ones.....
any help would be brill......(or just someone to make my mind up for me!!)

do you still recomend to visit Cape Town? Posted: Thu June 12, 2008 11:04 AM UTC
Hello, I posted a question few weeks ago saying we are planning to visit Cape Town in August, we have the flighst and hotel booked but with all the xenofobic problems you are suffering and the few information we can get in Spain I would like to ask you advice, do you recomend us still travel there or shall we delay the visit until December to see if things get better?
I have read in a comment that the refugees are all over Cape Town ( also at the Waterfront and also there is a tuberculosis epidemia) is this true?
I would really apreciate your honest comments. Thank you very much.

Cape Town in August Posted: Mon May 12, 2008 02:57 PM UTC
Hello, we are a spanish couple travelling to CT the last week of August ( 8 days ) and we need a bit of help.
Our main reason is to see the white sharks, we want to spend 3 days diving and see them breaching, any recomended companies?
We are going to stay at the Townhouse Hotel, somebody has been there? is OK?
Other things we would like to see are:
- Table Mountain ( is necesary to book with a company or easy to do it by ourselves?
- Cape Peninsula ( tour )
- Going to Hermanus to see the whales ( here again, is it posible to do it by ourselves or is better to book a tour? ).
- Visit a Game Reserve, is it worth it or is just for tourists?
Anything we should'n miss?
Also, do you have any recomendations for restaurants.
Thank you very much in advance.

Family visit to Cape Town in July, 2008 Posted: Sat May 10, 2008 05:34 AM UTC
We will be in Cape Town in late July of 2008 with our 14-year-old daughter, and will have several full days and several half-days for activities to get know the Cape Town area of Africa. We will not be flying out for a 1 or 2 day safari, but doing more local things. We understand this is winter and we have never been to Africa before, but we will be there for business and we want to do some family tour time.
We have heard that the following are good – are there any detailed suggestions on these, or suggestions for other destinations?
> Table Mountain
> Robben Island
> Cape Point
> Chapman’s Peak Road
> Boulder’s Beach and penguins (is it nuts to swim with them in Winter?)
> World of Birds, Hout Bay area
What do people think about:
> Imhoff Farm Village camel rides – we heard they a tourist dump. Are they un-safe (ride along a road) or just not ideal -- are in a rural area (ride on roads to the beach)?
> Westcoast Ostrich Show Ranch, or a place one can ride an ostrich?
> Winter weather -- if it is rainy, cloudy and windy, what options are there for us to get to know Africa and Cape Town?
> Car rental versus hiring a car and driver for a day trip to Cape Point?
> Other unique activities to build family memories of Cape Town and Africa
What are suggestions for a Bed-and-breakfast if we took two days to tour the Cape area? Any comments on these:
> Guinea Fowl House B&B
> Simon's Town and Toad Hall B&B
> Chartfield Guesthouse B&B
> 1 Blue On Blue B&B
Thank you!

flying high Posted: Mon April 28, 2008 01:56 PM UTC
Hello!
Anybody knows what would be the best bet when it comes to choosing a flightcompany to get to cape town from europe (I am from Brussels but am prepared to start from a neignbouring country). When in South America last year, a friend of mine discovered real cheap flights, (Flights that were only one third of the regular price), on a site that sells only throuh internet.
Anyone an idea?
Also I would if possible like to combine countries like Tanzania and South Africa. Only, sometimes aircompanies offer single flights that are almost the price of a full ticket, which would not make this "combi" possible...
Love from Belgium

Cape Town tourist recommendations Posted: Thu April 10, 2008 02:17 AM UTC
I'll be traveling to Cape Town in November but I'm starting to think about what I'll want to do when I'm there. I know I want to visit Table Mountain & Robben Island & I also want to see penguins. The problem is I only have 2 full days. Can I do Robben Island & Table Mountain in the same day? Where's the best place to see penguins & how long does it take to get there from the center of the city? What else is a must-see in Cape Town? Any recommendations for moderately priced restaurants?
