Accommodation in The Gambia Posted: Thu February 21, 2008 03:28 PM UTC
Hi there. My boyfriend and I are planning to visit the Gambia at the beginning of June. I was wondering if there is any beach hut style accommodation available on the beach (i'm thinking like Thailand or Goa) as this would be our chosen type of accomodation. If not, could anyone recommend somewhere cheap and cheerful, very near the beach similar to this type of accommodation? We are looking for anything a bit differnet like tree houses etc.? I know it's a long shot, any information would be grateful.
Thanks in advance

Travelling to The Gambia. Posted: Wed February 20, 2008 12:22 AM UTC
Hi, I and a friend are travelling to The Gambia within the next month. We would like to find out about accomodation as we want to move away from the coast. I heard of a site called africania which promotes sustainable tourism, but the site is now under construction. Does anybody know how to contact the people behind the site, such as an email?
We are also on a budget, would 150 pounds a week see us right? Also, we wanted to head north to Kaolack and maybe Dakar, what sort of travel times would be normal to Dakar via the cheapest or fastest possible mode of transport?
One other question, we've been looking for information on how to decide what to pay if asked for road tax. As it may happen that we might be left waiting until we pay, would travelling with a guide avoid this?
Its a bunch of questions and more might follow, but if your guys could answer even some of them, it would help alot.
Many thanks in advance.

We're going to Gambia for the first time due to troubles in Kenya. Has anyone stayed at this hotel? What is there to do locally as regards things to see/restaurants/bars. Also is it possible to go to Niokolo Koba from Banjul and if so what sort of price could we expect to pay in March and would we need visas. Any info would be greatly appreciated

follow on from previous question.
i plan to take a bag of things for the kids, really just a sports bag and leave it over there for someone.
question is .....will it be safe at the gambia end as being material it will be easily cut open. i,m not questioning the gambians integrity but if they are as poor as people make out is it possible someone at the airport might see this as an easy target?

Vaccinations ????? Posted: Mon January 14, 2008 06:26 PM UTC
I'm going to the Gambia in a little over two weeks for a 7day holiday in a nice touristy beach resort - does anyone doing similar actually get all the vaccinations recommended?
These vaccinations are jolly expensive in the UK (which is a little confusing as just £1 can apparently vaccinate a whole African family according to Comic Relief) I'd really appriciate some advice on what diseases really are a problem for tourists?
I know that I should ideally have all vaccinations but at this point in time and with my bank balance, this isn't going to happen. If anyone who's been there (or is medically trained) can offer advice, I'd be very grateful.

we are going to the palm beach hotel, banjul in 3 weeks time. usual question i suppose, has anyone been recently and their comments, tips, ideas etc. please?
we,ve read the usual what to bring/not to bring but are the pens/pencils etc a real good idea or not?. if so what/ where is the best way to distribute them, again we,ve heard/read about them being sold on, so whats best?.
i believe there is a prison wardens club opposite the hotel, are tourists welcome in there or not and again, any advice for their kids?.
as this is our first time in the gambia, we usually go to india/far east, we would welcome any advice at all about the place. we are a middle age couple so the nightlife doesn,t really concern us, a quiet drink does us.
thanks in advance everyone,
steve c

Food and drink costs Gunjur Posted: Fri January 4, 2008 06:42 PM UTC
Hi all
We are off to Footsteps Eco Lodge later this week. We were a little suprised at the cost of food and drinks on their menu and wondered if anyone knows of anywhere cheaper to eat around Gunjur. We want to avoid tummy upsets though so no dodgy eating places!!
Also is there anywhere to change money in Gunjur or do we have to do it at the airport?
Thanks

Ref Bumsters Posted: Mon December 17, 2007 10:43 AM UTC
I went to The Gambia about 9 years ago and would like to go back with my wife this time. Last time i went the atmosphere was great, the people very relaxed, yes you had to be aware of the people around you and that it is a third world country but the people where happy with life and there lot generally.
But i am very concerned about going back is the country in such a state that they have to fleese every tourist. I enjoy travelling, we have been to Egypt and India and the normal hussel and bussel is part of the fun but I expect to be able to say no! firmly and be understood, I don't need the hassle of verbal abuse or threat of violence. It sounds like the one and only time i went to Morocco.

Advice/Guidance Posted: Thu November 8, 2007 04:34 PM UTC
Hi all,
Im looking to book a holiday for my parents in their early 60's, in banjul for late april. Thinking of staying in the corinthia atlantic hotel. Any opinions on this place would be welcome. Also whats the weather like at this time of year? Also where's the best place for them to have a drink? and how much do the prices for drink typically cost? Being in their 60's they prefer relaxing and taking it easy any suggestions on what they can get up to whilst there? All responses will be really appreciated.
Thanks Chris

Budget Posted: Fri October 26, 2007 10:51 AM UTC
Hi All,
Just some advice, myself and my best friend are travelling on 6th November for a week half board at Senegambia, Im still not sure how much cash I will need to take, the Rough guide said allow for £200 a week based on 3 weeks with having to pay for B&B's.
I was going to take around £200 in cash and £150 in travellers cheques, is this going to be way to much money, we would like to do some excursions and eat out / party most nights as well.
Thanks,
Alex

Urgent thinking of booking for October Palm Beach Hotel??? Posted: Wed September 12, 2007 04:41 PM UTC
Hi
Found a deal on a website for one week stay half board at the Palm Beach Hotel in Banjul for £379, to fly from Manchester on the 9th October. Thinking of booking it this week.
How hot will it be in Oct?? and has anyone stayed in this hotel?? i know the hotel seems basic but for money looks ok. It will be my first time in gambia and my first holiday with my new partner, we are both 27 and would want to do some trips while we are there.
Any advice will be appreciated x
