getting to split Posted: Fri July 3, 2009 10:25 PM UTC
hi we arrive at 9.30 in the evening and the car we had hired fell through.
now I can't find any cars for less than 800@euro for 2 weeks.
how much would it cost to get a taxi to split? how long woulod it take cos we were hoping to get the ferry to split at 23.59;
I think it is going to be too much to get a taxi and no joy to get a car so we should spend the night in zadar and get a bus the next day - I believe bus is better for zadar split than train...
any advice welcome - where to hire a car, place to stay near zadar, how to get to split etc
cheers
Tom

Hvar & Brac - all suggestions appreciated Posted: Tue June 30, 2009 10:10 PM UTC
My boyfriend and I are in Croatia in early September and we would like to spend 7 nights on Hvar and also maybe Brac or another island.
We are in our 30s, we love nature, the sea, snorkelling, and eating out. We're thinking Hvar town sounds a bit too "party" for us (we don't want a holiday centered on clubs, yachts and cocktails) but we'd like somewhere that is beautiful, interesting and has at least 2 or 3 restaurants and shops (ie minimarkets). We will be hiring a car to explore the rest of the island. (We stayed in Sali on Dugi Otok last year and we loved it, to give you an idea of our kind of place.) Zavala looks like it could be the place but I'm wondering if it is too sleepy?
Also wondering whether we should spend half the week Hvar and half the week on Brac, or somewhere else like Vis. Really want to see Brac but we would have to get the car ferry back to Split then to Brac again and we want to have a nice relaxing week. If we took a day trip on the catamaran from Hvar to Brac is it easy to get around without a car? And where on Brac would you suggest heading for (quite fancy Zlatni Rat but I bet it's v touristy?)
I know I have asked a lot of questions here but I would really appreciate any advice or suggestions you can give.
Thank you
Amber

Korcula or Brac? Posted: Tue June 30, 2009 11:28 AM UTC
Hi folks,
I'll be in Croatia next month and aim to spend 5 days - a week on one of the islands in Dalmatia. Can't decide between Korcula and Brac. We're looking for somewhere to relax during the day with good swimming and then with some good nightlife at night - good bars rather than clubs really. Will probably stay in either Korcula Town or Bol.
Any advice?
Harry, Glasgow.

Zadar - Korcula Posted: Sun June 28, 2009 02:46 PM UTC
Hello VTs,
Will be arriving in Zadar next month and have a couple of questions.
We're flying in and arrive around 9pm. If we take a bus to the centre at that time should be still be ok to get a private room in the old town? Hoping to get something for around 300KN for the night.
Also, we're looking to go from Zadar to Korcula - is there a ferry that goes between the two or will we have to change in Split?
Will be grateful for any help.
Harry, Glasgow.

Prices in Kuna Posted: Fri June 26, 2009 09:46 PM UTC
Hello...
Can anyone give me an idea of how much are items priced in kuna ie postcards, a can of coke, etc just so I have an idea of the prices. Do the stores only accept kuna? How far is the port where the cruise ships are docked if you were to go to ' Riva '? Are the shops around this area open on Sundays?
Appreciate your info.
Thanks.

How much is Jack Daniels Posted: Fri June 26, 2009 12:49 PM UTC
Just wondering if I should be buying it before I go it can get it at a reasonable price there. The price is actually inflated in UK, much cheaper in US where I was brought up on it ;-)
Thanks

2 Questions - Money and Ferries Posted: Thu June 25, 2009 07:52 AM UTC
Due to a cock-up by the bank I will be going to Supetar with half my money in British pounds. Can anyone tell me what would be the best way to convert to Kuna's. I know the airport would be worse. So I assume my options are Bureau de Change or Banks. Any others?
Also, I imagine we'll be taking quite a few trip on the ferry between Supetar and Split. Is there weekly discounted ticket and would it be worth it?
Thanks very much... only 2 days left.. we're really looking forward to it
Thanks
Steve

Transport from Hvar Town to Stari Grad in the morning Posted: Tue June 23, 2009 04:46 PM UTC
Hello
I am planning on booking the ferry from Stari Grad to Dubrovnik which leaves early on the Saturday morning, however would like to stay in Hvar Town, so need to be able to travel from Hvar Town to Stari Grad early in the morning.
Does anybody know when the earliest bus from Hvar Town to Stari Grad is? Or how much a taxi would cost as another possible option?
Thanks

Leisurely Cycling on the Islands Posted: Fri June 19, 2009 03:16 PM UTC
Hi,
I'll be cycling for about a week at the beginning of July and I would like to find the nicest islands to visit. I'm thinking of leisurely - not too hilly - and interspersed with some swimming.
Without any real knowledge, my current plan is Hvar and Korcula, maybe a few days on each.
I also plan to buy a second hand bike in Dubrovnik. Anyone know of a good shop that sells second hand bikes,
Thanks,
Jim

Croatia Must Sees & Off the Beaten Path Posted: Fri June 19, 2009 02:05 PM UTC
4 friends and I leave next week for Croatia. We are going to Zagreb, Plitvice, Split, and Dubrovnik. Does anyone have an "must sees" in any of these cities. I also always enjoy sites that are off the beaten path and not touristy.
Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Day Trips from Pula Posted: Tue June 16, 2009 12:12 PM UTC
I am organizing a trip for a group of people from Russia next summer. I want to know if it possible to travel to Venice for the day for Russian citizens if they do not have a Visa to Italy. Can a visa for the day be purchased or does this need to be arranged with local embassies in Russia before our trip. Please advise. Thanks.

Supetar to Bol and Hvar Posted: Mon June 15, 2009 12:05 PM UTC
I won't have access to a car so I assume my best bet to get from Supetar to Bol is via bus? Any idea how long a trip that would be?
Also are there any ferries that go from Supetar to Hvar or would I have to go via Split
Thanks Much

I'm going to Pula next August, and the question, is: If I don't find accommodation in the historic centre, which area do you recommend me? Obvioulsy, easy to get to the centre either in my car or with public transportation. And, any recommendations regarding hotel/hostel?

Excursions from Rovinj Posted: Sat June 13, 2009 11:23 AM UTC
I'd like to visit Plitvice Lakes National Park (party of 3) but who offers excursions from Rovinj?
Also is it worth the long journey or are there lesser comparable attractions closer to Rovinj?
What are costs like - i.e. could I get a private car trip and guide - I could consider car hire but it's 3 or 4 hours drive each way. Might I find an enterprising local who'd take us for maybe USD150?

Bari to Dubrovnik Overnight Ferry - Please help! Posted: Fri June 12, 2009 08:38 PM UTC
Unfortunately, this is very last minute but I am hoping someone can help! We are in Sorrento, Italy and planning to travel to Bari via train tomorrow (13 June), take the overnight ferry to Dubrovnik through Jardolinija. Here are my questions
1 - Can we not share a cabin? It appears that my husband and I have to stay in cabins of the same sex only. If this is not the case, i am not sure how to book it otherwise.
2 - We want to get a cabin so we can hopefully get some sleep - if this is not possible, has anyone traveled this route and stayed in the other seat options?
3 - Luggage - does it get checked or can it stay with us? we have about 3 pieces plus personal items and only one is too large to carry on as far as airplane requirements go.
4 - I am feeling in a rush to book online asap, but is that necessary? some say yes, but some on these forums say they have just shown up and bought tickets before departure taht same day.
thanks for any advice you can offer at the last minute...

Croatia->Bosnia->Croatia Posted: Thu June 11, 2009 01:05 PM UTC
Hello,
I just wonder if anybody knows where I could read about regulations on crossing Bosnian territory when going to the South of Croatia.
Maybe I'm really dumb in my researched but I didn't manage to find.
I mean, there is a piece of Bosnian territory when going from the North of Croatia to the South. I'm thinking of repeating this itinerary (last time it was in a bus and I successfully slept this adventure) but this bothers me a bit...
Thanks in advance,
I.

Supetar - Restaurant and pub recommendation Posted: Tue June 9, 2009 06:42 AM UTC
Will be in Supetar for a week, would like to have one nice, romantic meal with partner during my stay. Wondering if anyone could recommend restaurant. If not in Supetar, then maybe split. The most important part is the quality of the food as opposed to the atmosphere - we like a good food. Either good basic home cooking or some elegant dish, just as long as its good quality
Also, being from UK, we like the idea of a local pub, a place where we would go for a beer/wine after a day at the beach or coming back from sightseeing. Somewhere with good drink and good company. Maybe somewhere the locals go and don't mind a coupla tourists coming in.
Thanks
Steve

Details on the ferry from Zadar to Ancona? Posted: Mon June 8, 2009 07:16 PM UTC
Hello all,
we are planning on taking the night ferry from Zadar to Ancona on the 13th of July (2 + car) and are pondering on whether to take a sleeping booth or what they call a "reclining airport seat". Does anybody know if the differences are significant? On the one hand, it's a 140$ difference, but on the other hand, we don't want to get to Ancona beat to death...
Thanks :-)

Split/Brac in June - Insects? Posted: Mon June 8, 2009 11:24 AM UTC
My family and I will be in Brac and Split the end of June and we were just wondering if we should bring insect repellent or if the things are really bad and we should even think of netting?
Having traveled to Scotland where at certain times of the year and certain areas you can get swarms of midges, just wanted to be prepared
Thanks

Split or Trogir Posted: Sat June 6, 2009 08:19 PM UTC
My fiance and I are traveling to Croatia the end of July for our Honeymoon. Should we stay in Split or Trogir? I have heard that Split is more "touristy," which could be good or bad. We will visit both (we are renting a car), but I am trying to decide which city would be a better as "home base" and which would be better as a day trip.
