Sofia/Belgrade Advice Posted: Mon May 5, 2008 10:18 PM UTC
Hey All,
I am an American student hoping to travel to travel from nothern greece through Bulgaria, Seria, and Montenegro to eventually take a ferry back to Italy. I had a couple questions I hope someone could help me with.
1. I have around 5 days to make it back to Italy and was wondering what places you'll recommend I should stop in along the way. I was thinking Sofia and Belgrade but am open to pretty much anything as long as i can get there by train or bus.
2. I would be traveling by myself, are there any places in Serbia or Bulgaria that I should defintely avoid going alone?
Finally, I will be doing all this starting May 22nd, so if anyone else has a similar plan and wanted to meet up, let me know.
Thanks,
Bruce

we are coming to shumen area via sofia instead of varna this summer and fancy getting the city vibe for a few hours. arrive mid morning sunday and thought of getting a cheap hotel to drop bags and then have a mooch around ending with a cafe/bar or something which has vege food and some music-maybe bulgarian/alternative mix.gotta please 2 13 year olds too so dont want too much travelling around.is there a good area to stay where we could find most of this and please the kids too but still have a little adventure. my friend says we would be best getting a hire car straight away and stopping half way at veliko the night.would apppreciate your advice.
thanks

visiting Sofia and Istanbul Posted: Thu March 27, 2008 04:38 PM UTC
My wife and I are considering flying from Slovenia to Sofia-spending time there and then taking a train to Istanbul and staying there for a few days.We would return to Sofia to fly back to Slovenia. We are seeking advice about how long to stay in both cities and how much time to allot for travel-we probably have a time frame of 5-6 days. Is this enough time or is it too ambitious? Any input is appreciated.

Patriarch's Residence? Posted: Tue March 18, 2008 09:36 PM UTC
Hi,
I was wondering if the yellow building that you posted 2 photos of was indeed the bulgarian orthodox patriarch's residence? I have a photo of a yellow building in Sofia, from the back, and I am trying to identify it. It looks a lot like the photos you posted. Thanks

Taxis from the airport Posted: Tue March 11, 2008 10:29 PM UTC
Hi, similar to the last questions - I am arriving in Sofia with my husband at about 11pm at night at Sofia airport. Can anyone tell me how late the buses run into town? I realise there are also taxis and it sounds like I should book only from the OK Supertrans taxi desk if I don't want to be ripped off! The thing is I am wondering if this taxi desk will be open at that time of night? Does anyone know?
Thanks!

Arriving in Sofia late at night Posted: Mon March 10, 2008 09:36 PM UTC
I've just seen a cheap flight advertised to Sofia from London. The reason it is so cheap is that it arrives in Sofia at around midnight. So how practical is that? Is it a 24 hour airport where I can change money?
Thanks ;@P

self service restaurants Posted: Fri January 25, 2008 04:45 PM UTC
I am visiting Sofia in March. I am a fit and healthy 69 year old and I would prefer not to eat big meals. I visited Kiev twice last year and found 3 great self service restaurants which meant I could go in 2/3 times a day and have a small meal; they had great variety, the food was excellent and very reasonable. I am looking for something similar in Sofia - advice please.

Train Sofia - Nis - Belgrade Posted: Mon January 7, 2008 09:54 AM UTC
I will be arriving to Sofia by plane from London, England. I am just curious as to how easy it is to get to the train station and what the best way to go about getting to the station is? Is there a separate international train station, as i will be going to Belgrade?
Also, does anyone know of the cost of the train to Nis or to Belgrade? I found the schedule, 2 trains per day, is that right?
thank you very much, i will have some more questions later in regards to where to stay in sofia and what to do on my way back, i plan on stay for 3-5 days on my way home.
thanks again!!!

Best way to get to Plovdiv? Posted: Sun September 30, 2007 01:10 PM UTC
Hi, I was hoping to find out the best and easiest way to get about 10 women from Sofia airport to Plovdiv. I've heard the buses are not a fun experience, especially with luggage. We will each have one suitcase. Do the bus or train stations have any english speaking employees to help purchase the tickets? Thanks for your info!

Organised day trips e.g. Veliko Tarnovo Posted: Tue September 18, 2007 11:56 PM UTC
Just wondered if there are agencies that do organised day trips from Sofia into the Bulgarian countryside?
We could get public transport to and from Veliko Tarnovo within a day (it would be the last day of our trip so unfortunately we wouldn't be able to stay longer) but I also hear that there are wonderful monasteries and other sights in the Bulgarian countryside.
I just wondered if any agencies do organised day trips that would take in Veliko Tarnovo and maybe stop off in one or two spots on the way? I've been on similar trips in other countries occasionally (not often as we prefer to travel independently) but occasionally if you have very little time you can see more on an organised trip....

Cafes or Bars within walking distance of Sofia Princess Hotel Posted: Mon September 17, 2007 05:15 AM UTC
I will be in Sofia Sept 21 to 23 at the Sofia Princess Hotel. I will be able to see a lot of the great historical sights of the city as part of a tour but I am looking for some places to explore on my own near the hotel--I am somewhat limited by only speaking English, and a chronic tendency to get lost, so I'd especially be interested in anywhere to get a meal, drink or coffee that's not to difficult to reach on my own. Thanks.

Yom Kippur Services in Sofia, Bulgaria Posted: Wed August 8, 2007 02:56 PM UTC
We are having an international meeting in Sofia, Bulgaria over Yom Kippur. Several Jewish participants would like to attend Yom Kippur Services. Is there a synagogue (? Central Synagogue) where we could attend? If so, what would the cost be for a single individual for Friday night and/or Saturday services?
Thank you!

Which is the best choice/location Posted: Mon July 23, 2007 01:00 PM UTC
Hello everyone - I wonder if you can help.
I will be in Sofia with a friend on 14-16 September and we want to stay somewhere very well located and get the best deal possible - we have 40 Euro per night to spend on accommodation. Which is the best choice out of the Hotel Iskar (on Iskar Street) the Orient Express hostel (on Hristo Belchev st) and an apartment located on Laiosh Koshut Street?
We would like to be close to the most lively area of town for nightlife but also want to be on a safe street.
Based on the internet pictures of Orient Express hostel we like this option best - does anyone know if it is as nice as it looks in reality? Is it in a good location?
Thanks in advance for your help!
