Looking for someone to drive from Windhoek (or Swakopmond) to Opuwo - September Posted: Sat August 22, 2009 08:11 PM UTC
I will be traveling solo in Namibia in September, 2009. I need to drive to Opuwo from either Windhoek or Swakopmond. I am a little flexible with my dates, but ideally I would like to leave on September 10th or 11th and must be back in Windhoek by Sept. 20th. I'm a writer in need of information and a safe traveling companion. I know Africa. I lived in South Africa in the late 90s and have driven extensively through Namibia. I just don't want to do it alone now.
(p.s. - I'm not a kid... woman in my 40s and purely looking for someone to share gas and provide a 'safety in numbers element)

Namibia Posted: Mon August 3, 2009 10:38 PM UTC
Hi,
I will be travelling Namibia for 12 days at the end of August and will be by myself. I was planning on renting a car and to do the north route. Any advises on car rental companies? How are the streets and is it dangerous to travel Namibia alone as a female? Any advise would be much appreciated.
Many thanks

Rental Car in Namibia Posted: Mon June 29, 2009 12:18 PM UTC
Greetings from a new subscriber! My first enquiry! I am intending touring by car in Namibia/Botswana for four weeks in September 2009 and am looking for guidance re a reputable rental car company in Windhoek that will not charge an arm and a leg!! I will use a Toyota Corolla or something similar as I am not intending to head off into 4WD territory. But, I shall be spending days on gravel roads. I have had contact with Savannah, Odyssey, Value and Avis (most expensive!) and am favoring Savannah. Has anyone had any experience with Savannah?? I am from New Zealand and am familiar with driving on gravel so that does not concern me. Any advice will be most welcome - thank you!

First family adventure. Posted: Sat May 30, 2009 12:50 AM UTC
Hi,
My husband and I are planning a trip to Namibia for September 2010... Just over a year away. We will be traveling with our child who will be one year old at the time.
We would like to start in Cape Town then drive north all of the way to Vic Falls stopping in several places along the way. We plan on sticking to the beaten path, Cape Town, Windhoek, Swakopmund, Sossusvlei and Etosha National Park. We would stay in each of these places for at least a couple of days.
We are wondering what the best route would be for this trip, We would be open to flying from Cape Town to Windhoek or Windhoek to Vic Falls, but not both.
We are looking for ideas as to the best route for this, as well as neat places in between some of the longer legs. We would prefer to drive 5 hours or less per day as that can be easily take several breaks without having a child who either A) slept all day and will now be up all night or B)a child who is growing rapidly bored of their toys and the throw it so mommy gets it game.
We are intrested in staying at the Okaukuejo Lodge in Etosha and are wondering if anyone has stayed there with children? I saw a note that said perhaps small children were nto allowed inside the park? The website offers Family rooms.
Thank you so much for your POSITIVE feedback, we are looking for any advice or ideas you have to offer!
Regards,
Alice&Rocky

Windhoek Car Hire Posted: Mon May 25, 2009 01:35 PM UTC
G'day
Is it worthwhile booking a car in advance (6 days), or is car hire plentiful at the airport.

Joe's Beerhouse Posted: Wed May 6, 2009 07:57 PM UTC
Im going to be in Windhoek for one night before I embark on a volunteer placement and it sounds like Joe's Beerhouse is the place to go in the evening. I'm a girl travelling alone so wanted to know if its the sort of place I can go on my own? Or will I stick out like a sore thumb??

Harnas? Posted: Sun April 5, 2009 06:21 PM UTC
Hello all
Has anybody been to Harnas? It looks like a very exciting place and sells itself as a conservation project. Their website is a little unclear as to what the "activities" are and it is clearly not a cheap place to visit / spend time at / board at. If anybody out there could give me some information on it I would be grateful. Thank you

Swakopmund or Walvis Bay? Posted: Tue March 31, 2009 11:25 PM UTC
Hello all :)
I need a stop from/after Sossusvlei and this area is sounding interesting...
I am very much loving the idea of the birds at Walvis Bay
but we are a family travelling and so Swakopmund may be a better "break in the journey" option...
can anybody reccomend which one is better? I just have run out of brain power to make the decision!!!!! Muchos gracios!

Sossusvlei Posted: Mon March 30, 2009 10:37 PM UTC
Hello :)
I am going to be travelling through Namibia on a family self drive holiday in July (with 2 travel hardy children aged 7 & 9). We will stay one night at Sossusvlei with the view to do a sunrise trip into the dunes.
1) Can anybody reccomend somewhere to stay that is in easy sunrise experience distance - I have read that we will need to stay in Sesriem.... and so far the lodges I am seeing have VERY expensive prices per person! Also if you do have somewhere to reccomend can we book a sunrise tour with them? and, how much (if you have that info)
Thank you

Buying fish in Swakopmund Posted: Sat March 28, 2009 08:13 PM UTC
We will be touring in Namibia later in the year in a 4WD with a large portable fridge/freezer on board. We will be spending one night in Swakopmund and, with the limited availability of food supplies elsewhere, we would like to stock up with some of the excellent local fish - white fish, shellfish, lobsters, anything that comes from the sea! Can anyone give me the names and addresses of where we can buy fish (retail not restaurant). We would like as many addresses as we can get, since it is amazing how often the place one is told turns out to be closed at the day and time we get there.

True crime risks and taxis from Walvis Bay to Swakopmund. Posted: Mon March 2, 2009 10:01 PM UTC
I've heard there is a serious and growing problem of non-violent crime in Namibia. We'll be flying into Walvis Bay and need transport to Swakopmund. I'm looking for some real information on what I've been reading concerning this problem, particularly in the area of a problem I've been seeing with unscrupulous taxi drivers.

B us from Cape Town to Windhoek Posted: Thu January 15, 2009 05:09 PM UTC
A single female in her 60s I am looking to take my grandchild (aged 15) on a bit of an adventure to include the bus trip from C/town to Windhoek on the Intercape(?) overnight service - the double decker air conditioned service I would be looking at. Has anyone out there done this trip and would you say it was safe for a couple like us travelling? I am imagining our fellow travellers would be gap year students or older people like myself interested in travel. Any help or pointers you can give would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Advice on a good tour company? Posted: Tue January 13, 2009 12:58 AM UTC
Hi,
I will be travelling to Namibia alone in March and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of a good tour/ guide. I don't like the touristic safaris which I have been seeing online. Has anyone had a good experience with an organized tour or know of any good guides? I want to visit Etosha, Skeleton coast and spend the majority of my time in the desert.
I'd love any advice on anything about namibia.
Thank you.

Weather in November Posted: Wed November 5, 2008 09:23 PM UTC
I am visiting Swakopmund end November - Cape Cross and Kayaking in Pelican Point. I have heard it is cold which I am really surprised about - is this true? Does anybody know the best clothes to wear for the Kayaking? I was going to wear swimwear but if its cold I think I will wrap up.

Swakopmund to Cape Town, possible modes of transport??? Posted: Mon September 29, 2008 02:25 PM UTC
Hi people,
Myself and a mate are planning on doing an Overland tour from Victoria Falls to Swakopmund in Namibia. From there we want to get to Cape Town. I’ve tried to find flights but haven’t had any success yet? Can anyone confirm if it’s possible to fly direct?
If not, what other options are available? Is there a train, or is the distance too great to go by any other means other than plane?
Also, is Namibia considered safer than South Africa?
And finally, what type of weather can we expect in Namibia around mid to late December?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Public transport or taxi in Windhoek, or hire a car? Posted: Sun September 28, 2008 04:19 PM UTC
Hi, My son and I are going to Southern African in April next year. We will be doing a week/10 day Namibian safari, and will be staying in Windhoek 1 day before and 1 day after the safari. Does anyone have advice on travel to and from the international airport in Windhoek to the city? Is there reliable & safe public transport, or would hiring a car for one day each time be better?
I also thought of booking our accommodation at a hotel that provides shuttle services to make it easier... Any ideas would be appreciated.

Sandskiing in Namibia Posted: Wed September 24, 2008 11:21 PM UTC
I've found tons of places that offer sandboarding but I haven't found any companies offering sandskiing. Is sandskiing available in Namibia? Is the reason why there aren't that many sandskiing places because sandskiing is not that great over there?

Heading to Namibia.. no clue what to do!! Posted: Tue August 12, 2008 09:40 AM UTC
Hey guys! As always I need my VT member's help! I'm traveling to Namibia on Thursday the 14th of August and arriving in the evening. I'm meant to go to a wild life sanctuary, however, I don't think my work visa will be done in time. If not, I have to figure out what I"m going to be doing there on my own :0S
Can I arrive and then look for the hotel? Can I also find transportation easily? What about booking tours that are not very touristic? I need all the help I can get coz I"m starting to freak out hahahah
thanks as always!

Winter Weather Posted: Mon July 21, 2008 02:42 AM UTC
Hello, my family and I are heading to Namibia for 2 weeks this August. Do we need to bring heavy sleeping bags even if we are planning not to do any camping? Can you rent them if need be? Also, will I need to bring warm clothes for the evenings and cool clothes for the daytime?
Thanks for all your help.

Basic Namibia Question Posted: Fri June 13, 2008 11:41 PM UTC
I am planning on traveling to Namibia for two weeks this coming August with my sister and father. Is there anything that we need to book ahead of time such as a car rental, hotels, park entries, etc., or is Namibia the type of country where you can just show up and wing it?
Thanks for the help.

Accomodations in Oshakati Posted: Sat April 19, 2008 03:26 PM UTC
I'm headed to a wedding in Iipopo and they suggested we stay in Ondangwa but all I can find there are large hotel-type places. I'd like a smaller, more exclusive lodge. Any ideas? I thought about heading to Oshakati and staying there which is about 30 minutes from Ondangwa. Any nice places there? Thanks!
