Hi- I am flying into Lilongwe at the start of August. Can anyone tell me how easy/safe/expensive it is to get a transfer to the city from the airport? Also- any good suggestions of nice friendly hostels in the city would be gratefully received! Cheers :)

Malawi Peanuts (Ground nuts) in Malawi
Posted: Mon March 31, 2008 11:29 AM UTC
I'd like to visit Malawi and I have a nut allergy. Could anyone tell me how widely used peanuts are? Is peanut oil sometimes used for frying?

I have discovered online that peanuts are sometimes used as a flour substitute, for example in Masamba (Greens). Is this frequently done and will I find it difficult to know when a dish contains peanuts?

Many thanks in advance.

Malawi Living in Blantyre - what's it like??
Posted: Tue February 5, 2008 12:55 AM UTC
Hello,
I am planning to go to Blantyre for about 6 months, and hope to also travel around the region. I have been looking for information about accommodations in Blantyre and have had a hard time finding much. One site said that it would cost about $1500-2000/month USD! That's FAR more than I pay at home! I thought it would be much less to live in Malawi. Is it true that you need to pay that much? that you need to hire security guards?? That is so not what I expected and was surprised to read that.

Any and all suggestions about temporary stays in Blantyre would be welcomed and much appreciated!!
Thanks!

Malawi Chongoni Rock Art area
Posted: Sat February 2, 2008 03:50 PM UTC
Hi
Does anyone know whether it is possible to visit the World Heritage Site Rock Art shelters at Chongoni? If so does anyone know about places to stay for a night or two in or near the area in May? I've contacted the Dedza Pottery and Lodge but the web encyclopaedia's mention The Rainbow Bar and Resthouse", "Winners Lodge", "The Boyz Club" and "The Chimwenwe Bar" also in Dedza. Any information or contact details would be much appreciated.
Thanks

My family is planning to travel to Malawi early 2008. I am looking for affordable secure house to rent for a month or 2 while in Lilongwe? Anyone know how I can make such arrangements? Where can I find rental homes in Lilongwe for a family of 7? How about renting a van for a 3 month period? Any other places of interest you can recommend while in Malawi for a family trip?

Thanks

Malawi Work in Africa
Posted: Thu April 26, 2007 09:46 AM UTC
Work in Africa.
What volunteer work is there in Zambia, Malawi or Botswana, for working and investing in young childrens lives and learning the countries language.
Helping in children's homes, playing sport/ crafts, teaching English or reading etc.
What resources/material is there that i can use for teaching?

I have spent time in these countries and at times lived with some families there, so had to fetch water, wash clothes by hand and enjoy a heated bucket wash!
Thanks and hope to hear.

We want to go to Malawi in July on vacation for about 4 weeks.
We are looking for cheap flights from Germany to Malawi and nice places in Malawi? Any suggestions for us? For sure, we will go to the lake Malawi to the Nkwichi Lodge. Any experiences? Is it possible to rent a car? And if yes, where and how much does is cost per day?
Looking forward for some information.

Malawi Flights
Posted: Tue September 5, 2006 07:42 PM UTC
Hi everyone.
Feel like going back to Malawi next year and have been looking into flights via expedia and kelkoo et al as well as klm.com and dialaflight.com and a few others. KLM seem to be doing specials for about 590 GBP , and KenyanAirways seem cheap too at about 400 pounds, but I was just wondering if anyone else had found any cheap flights to Lilongwe so that I can save some valuable kwacha?

Going in end of March for three weeks if that's any help...... would also be interested to hear if anyone else will be about there then, as I think I'll be by myself for most of the trip except for the hostel-met-people.

Cheers,

Ben

Hi folks,

Just wondering if anybody could tell me some good news that it is possible to get to Likoma Island from Lilongwe in a day. The ferry from the lake shore seems to take a day and a half and the flights appear to be charter only.

Anybody have any tips?

Malawi Malawi and kids
Posted: Tue August 31, 2004 07:51 PM UTC
We have been invited to a wedding in Malawi in May 2005. We have two kids, who will be 6 & 7 next year. Reading so much information from various sources leaves us very concerned about taking them. We are worried about health, what happens if we have an accident, reports of basic healthcare and reports of violent threats against tourists, especially in tourist spots, where we will be. Also not keen on reports of armed car jacking. Anyone have any recent report of taking kids to Malawi and would you advise for or against. ? Any input very welcome. ( we are not the most adventurous travellers, if we were to be honest ! )

Malawi Travel in Malawi
Posted: Wed June 9, 2004 12:09 PM UTC
Hi all VTs,

I am going to travel in August and September around Southern Africa, including Malawi. I will start on 1 August and travel from Maputo to Beira and later up to Malawi. I will be in Malawi most probably around 15 August.

Does anybody of you has information where is best to cross the border? Do you know about hitch-hiking in Malawi? Which roads have steady traffic? Are there any other cheap transport opportunities? What about staying in tent? Does anybody know if there are opportunities to stay for free?

I would be happy to hear from you!

Malawi Rainy season in Malawi?
Posted: Thu February 5, 2004 08:16 AM UTC
Hi there,
I'm planning to flee the Burundian hills for a while this month and I was thinking about Malawi. Can anyone tell me if this country is still worth visiting in the rainy season (which is about now, I think): impassable roads, flooded cities, storms on the lake? Or is this all wrong and is it actually a very fine time now to visit Malawi? Please let me know. Other tips are welcome too. Thanks,
Roel
