Visiting Libyan Embassy, London Posted: Sat October 17, 2009 10:39 PM UTC
Can anyone tell me if I can take a backpack, including my laptop and mobile phone, with me into the Libyan Embassy in London? I am going there to apply for a visa; I already have my passport translated into Arabic. Any ideas how long it will take me?

Are female tourists expected to cover their faces when visiting Libya? What sort of clothing options should be considered to accomodate Libya's climate and weather?

Has anyone visited the Libyan embassy in London recently? Posted: Thu July 23, 2009 08:46 PM UTC
Need to pay a visit to sort out VISA's. Their website says you can only apply from 10-11am Monday's to Wednesday with the VISA available at 1pm the following day (Monday to Wed only). Is this correct? Our travel agent (Silk Road and Beyond) are not convinced, saying there is normally a 1 week delay.
Also - is it possible to apply in person for the VISA but allow a third party (with receipt) to collect the VISA when ready? I don't live in London and so can't hang around waiting for the paperwork.
Finally - have also been told the VISA is only valid for 45 days and not 3 months from issue. Again, is this correct?
Thanks

How to get a visa in the UK? Posted: Sat June 13, 2009 10:33 AM UTC
Just been advised by our UK based Libyan tour operator that we may have to pay a visit to the Libyan bureau in person to give finger-prints inorder to get a VISA. Costs are also up now to £100 each (in addition to any arabic translation fees). Is this correct?

Travel Companion Posted: Sun May 31, 2009 04:17 PM UTC
Hello,
Around the end of June I'll be traveling through Libya. However, Libyan law states that as a tourist you have to be escorted by a guide while traveling.
To hire a guide for myself only is too expensive and useless.
So if anybody will be going from Tunesia to Egypt through the Libyan road next to the Mediterrenean sea around the end of June, how about traveling together and splitting the guide costs?
Thanks in advance,

Change in Visa for US Citizens (Passportholders) Posted: Sun May 3, 2009 02:10 AM UTC
Hello All-- Just a quick question...I was wondering if anyone knows the latest news on the availability of tourist visas for USA citizens/passportholders for visiting Libya. The Libyan Embassy is not too helpful and difficult to get a hold of. I had heard that because President Obama has assigned an ambassador to Libya and that the restrictions on Libyan citizens to visit the USA has been relaxed that the Libyans are taking similar actions. Is there any truth to this? I want to visit Libya this December and was wondering if there is a a Libyn travel company/tour operator that could arrange a tourist visa to Libya for American citizens. Please let me know. Thanks.

Driving in Libya Posted: Sun December 28, 2008 12:27 AM UTC
Hi all!
I am planning a 45 days drive around all the countries in the Mediterrenean Sea next year starting and ending in Rome. I would like to ask anyone who is knowlegable about Libya if it's safe and possible to drive the Northern coast and how many days are needed to make it to the Egyptian Border. Does it take very long to cross the border?
Thanks and Happy Travel to all!

Help! Posted: Tue April 15, 2008 05:16 PM UTC
I'm just tentatively thinking about a holiday in Libya around the beginning of October. (Tripoli/Leptis Magna and surrounds.) I naively planned to book a flight only and go armed with the Lonely Planet, but that doesn't look feasable from what I've read in this forum. Has anyone actually managed an independant holiday? Is it an expensive country to visit?(Food, accommadation etc)
Thanks very much!

Travelling companion Oct/Nov 2008 Posted: Sun April 13, 2008 05:38 AM UTC
I am an Australian male planning to visit Libya later this year. I need a travelling companion as the tour company will only confirm the tour if they have 2 bookings. The 18 day tour covers the Roman ruins on the coast but spends most time camping in the deserts down south. The tour cost per person (all inclusive local costs) is around PStg 2100.
Is there anyone (or two) out there interested in linking up with me to visit Libya?

SOLO TRAVELLING Posted: Mon March 24, 2008 09:59 PM UTC
I'm basically a solo traveler, in order just to go without having to wait anyone to decide if they want or not, therefore, my questions are:
1. Are there any conditions for travelling in Lybia, specifically solo? I heard that no one can travel on their own, this being in group or alone...
2. If the answer to the previous question is YES, how much would a guide cost and where should go or who should be contacted in order not to have a typical moroccan "False Guide"?
3. Is it backpacker friendly?
4. Which is the best way to enter Lybia besides by air?... boat or land?... if boat, which is a good port to depart from? would Malta be a good place to part from, by land which country is less of a hassle to enter by?
and,
5. What about ATM's?
Thank you so much for your help.
Best of all
ALFONSO
P.S.- Sorry for the amount of question but I'd rather ask now than forget later.

Three questions Posted: Wed March 19, 2008 02:13 AM UTC
We were thinking of going to Libya to visit husband's family. All visa info I've read on this board so far involves tourist companies, how does it work (for Americans) with family over there/letter of invite - we would be group of 4? Also husband was born in Libya, is U.S. citizen now, what is he considered in Libya? Last question, just curious; read the post below about Israelis, what about (non-Israeli) Jews, what is attitude there? Thanks

Israelis to travel in Libya Posted: Tue February 26, 2008 05:39 PM UTC
Hello, my name is Daniel, and I'm an Israeli. I've heard that Libya is beautiful place to travel in, but since Israelis cannot enter Libya with an Israeli passport, I was thinking to use my other passport - a European one.
Is it safe for an Israeli to travel in Libya? Do Libyan People love Israelis?
Thank you for your answers,
Daniel Cohen.

American Girl Trying to Visit Friend In Benghazi Libya Posted: Fri February 15, 2008 12:03 AM UTC
I want to go to benghazi but I don't believe they are issuing individual visas right now. Is there a group getting together to go? I see a lot of people leaving messages saying they need group of 4 to get visa! Well lets make a group. Though I just want to visit benghazi. Its sucks that they don't issue invitation letters to americans who want to travel there. Because i would love to visit a family there that i know. Is there a travel agency anyone knows about that does custom tours for americans over there?
Thanks,
Tara

An american failing to get Libyan Visa Posted: Wed February 6, 2008 09:12 PM UTC
I was denied Libyan visa today, and the main reason was that apparently the Libyan Embassy in Ottawa does not grant visas if you don't have at least 3 people in your group. What is really upsetting that this BS requirement is nowhere to be found on their website. Now after getting my passport translated, having the tour company fax the invitation, AND getting plane tickets I have pretty much run out of options. Has anyone got an individual tourist visa recently?

What to visit in and around Tripoli Posted: Tue January 29, 2008 07:11 PM UTC
I have now finalized my travel arrangements for my 3 3/4 day / 4 night stop-over in Tripoli.
I am planning to spend the remainder of the arrival day and the first full day in Tripoli, go to Leptis Magna on day 3 and then to Sabrata on day 4. On the last day day my plane leaves at 11 pm, so I have another (almost full) day. Does Tripoli warrant 2 full days or should I go to another place/site nearby ?
Thanks,
George

I will be traveling on a cruise in October 2008 that stops for one day in Tripoli. They have a day tour of Leptis Magna. How can I get a visa, I live in Vancouver Canada and have an USA passport. I will be with the tour from the ship, with my husband, Canadian and my friends, Italians. Will it be easy to get a visa for this visit? Where do I apply for it?

Hotel Visa Airlines: Posted: Wed December 12, 2007 10:52 PM UTC
Dear VT Members,
Could you please provide me with information regarding getting a visa to Libya. Which airlines fly to Libya and good hotel in Libya.
I was reading on the British Ministry Foreign Affairs since Nov 2007 your passport details have to be translated in Arabic) it states this)
On 11 November 2007, the Libyan authorities reimposed a requirement for all travellers entering (and including those re-entering) the country to have an Arabic transcript of their passport’s details page
The Money you can bring to Libya it states this)
Foreign currency on arrival
Since 15 August 2005, the Libyan authorities announced that all visitors, irrespective of nationality, should be in possession of a minimum amount of foreign currency equivalent to 500 Libyan Dinars. Failure to comply with this regulation will result in instant deportation and a fine to the airline. The Libyan authorities have requested that passengers prove that they meet this requirement to an Immigration Officer on arrival in Libya.
UK Citizens from London:
I sincerely hope could provide me with good information.

Guides Posted: Fri November 30, 2007 09:17 AM UTC
We keep repeating the same questions about guides and visas on this forum. It has become clear that a guide is required and that the actual visa situation is stickier than the formal guidelines indicate. One more time for clarity...can anyone out there recommend a reputable tour group to organize a trip? What are the approximate costs of a 10-12 day tour? I would obviously prefer to do something as independent as possible, within the required structure of an organized group. Thanks so much for any information.
