Kenya Anti Malaria Tablets
Posted: Thu July 24, 2008 10:06 AM UTC
Thanks to everyone who answered my previous question.

I get the message loud and clear and will certainly be spending the £69 for the tablets, i have researched others and it seems that Malarone are definately the most effective with the least side effects so i'll go with that.

Thanks all

Kenya Anti Malaria Tablets
Posted: Tue July 22, 2008 02:14 PM UTC
Hi there

Have had jabs today for safari in September (arms are killing!) and the doc advised me to get Malarone anti malaria tablets, they will prescribe them for me but apparently they cost £3 each and i need 23 for my trip, that means it's going to cost me £69 just for tablets!! Does everyone take / pay for these? Any advice otherwise?

Thanks

Nairobi Volunteering in Nairobi in October
Posted: Sun July 13, 2008 01:14 PM UTC
Hi all!

I'm considering going to Nairobi in a few months to volunteer. I'll probably be stationed somewhere near Kibera, or elsewhere in rural Nairobi.

Has anyone done this before in Nairobi? Anything I should be aware of?

Thanks!

Kenya Safari's in Kenya?
Posted: Thu July 10, 2008 03:49 PM UTC
I have forever wanted to go to Kenya and go on a safari with my boyfriend. I have finally saved enough money to go and I've been browsing the internet looking for good travel guides. I found www.kenya.com and they seen pretty legit and very fun, but I'm worried about safety and if it's a good time to be traveling to Africa... have people heard anything about this company, or know anyone who'se been on a Kenyan Safari?

Let me know!

Kenya Money in Kenya
Posted: Wed July 9, 2008 06:25 PM UTC
Hi guys,
Quick question about money. We know that we can use US dollars over there, and as there is a good exchange rate at the moment against the pound we are thinking of buying some. But we wondered which is the best to use - US dollars or Kenyan shillings?

Is there a bus or train that goes from Nairobi to johannesburg. I would love to travel with the locals and see the real country. I am going to be traveling in november. I am also looking for a place to do some volunteer work while I am there. I am a backpacker so I cannot afford to pay to volunteer. Appreciate any assistance that you can give. Thank you

Kenya Starting to plan a trip
Posted: Fri June 20, 2008 05:23 PM UTC
Hi. My name is Greg, and I'm new to this site. I love traveling, and I've been to many places around the world. I haven't been to Africa yet, though. I know a few people who have been to Kenya, and they loved it. I've heard about recent political troubles there, but I've also heard that it's still safe. I'm not sure when I'm going to go yet; I haven't booked anything. I do know that I want to go on a safari. I found this website. www.eyesonafrica.net that creates customized safaris and tours for small groups. It sounds really interesting. Tell me what you think.

Kenya Is it dangerous to travel to Kenya
Posted: Thu June 19, 2008 10:13 AM UTC
Hi

My friend and I booked one week vacation (end of July) in Kenya (somewhere near Mombasa), and until now I was ok and happy, but now I’m scared and nervous about that trip. So please it will be grateful, if someone who was recently there, tell me is it dangerous or no? And maybe the most important thighs abut safety that we should now.

Thank you a lot :-)

I have 2 questions - what on earth do you wear on safari??

Does anyone have any knowledge of the Sun N Sand resort, i've looked on some review websites recently and to be honest am actually quite worried as there are some quite negative reviews on there.

Kenya Short Safari in September
Posted: Mon June 2, 2008 01:00 PM UTC
Hi,

I'm just about to book a 3 day safari in Masai Mara in September. I know it's not a lot of time but that's all we have!

The camp site is along the Talek river on the border of the park. Can anyone tell me if it is easy to see the big 5 in September from there (yes, I know I'm being vague about the location). I know that the great migration takes place in July so don't really want to go somewhere when the animals won't be there.

Any hints also about what the weather will be like?

Thanks!

Hey, I would like to do 10 days or 8 days long Turkana lake safari. Could you recommend me some proved company for this? I would like to go there in mid July. Also what is your opinion about taking malaria pills in Kenya as prevention? I will stay there 30 days, Turkana lake, Mount Kenya, cost, Amboseli national park...I have heard about using B1 vitamine which mosquitos hate and dont bite you...Otherwise I was thinking bout Malarone... Is it true that in Kenya are not accepted US. dollars notes older than 2000? Thanks (will have prob some more question later :-)

Nairobi How to get to the Sheldrick Orphanage and Giraffe Centre
Posted: Thu May 29, 2008 01:57 PM UTC
My wife and I are flying out to Nairobi in July where we will have almost 2 spare days at a small hotel near Nairobi University before embarking on a 10 day overland truck drive through Kenya and Tanzania games parks.

Before we set off on the safari we really want to have a day at the David Sheldrick elephant orphanage and the Giraffe Centre to see the Rothschild giraffes plus, whilst we are in the area, a visit to the Karen Blixen Museum would be good. At present I am not sure how to get there and don't know if our hotel in Nairobi (Boulevard Hotel) will have such tours on offer.

As many of you have been there on this forum, please could you let me know how you go there - taxi, tour from hotel etc. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Kenya Direct route from Masai Mara to Amboseli
Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 03:32 PM UTC
a hard one but hope someone can help:

later in the year i want to get between the mara and amboseli without looping back north via nairobi on the main roads. is it possible to drive direct east from Ololaimutiek Gate via Morijo/Nguruman Escarpment to Magadi Lake? then from the lake east along railway track route to Kajado, joining the road there to amboseli. on the old map i have it shows a dirt tracks linking these and it doesnt matter if it takes longer than the usual road route. i will use a 4x4 and have a lot of off road experience. any advice appreciated!

Kenya General questions about Kenya
Posted: Mon May 5, 2008 06:23 PM UTC
Hi guys,
We're going to Nyali Beach in October for our honeymoon - we've not booked a safari yet but will get one when we're out there. Does any one know if there are locals who run their own safari tours out there? And do you recommend using them or going with the tour operator?!
Also, what injections do we need to get? We've just been told polio and typhoid.
Do hotels provide mosqito nets as standard or should we take some?!
We're going for 2 weeks, is there anything you recommend seeing? We'd love to go to the Masi Mara but think it'll take days to get there!
Is it best to get our visa in England or get them in Kenya? (they are cheaper in Kenya)
Any help would be brill!! (sorry for so many questions!)
Thanks.

Kenya Horse Riding in Kenya
Posted: Sun April 27, 2008 11:30 AM UTC
Hi All,

I'll be back again in Kenya later this year and was hoping to maybe do some horse riding this time. I'm only looking for a 1-2 hour trek, not a full-blown horseback safari over a couple of days. I haven't decided yet where exactly in Kenya I'll be travelling to, but am considering the Maasai Mara and maybe some places north of Nairobi (e.g. Baringo, Samburu, Shaba).

Are there any VTers here who have gone on a horseback trek in Kenya and can maybe recommend a good place for that in the areas that I'm planning to visit?

Kenya Need Kenya itinerary help
Posted: Sat April 26, 2008 06:01 PM UTC
I am trying to plan a trip to Kenya for mid-late August 2008 and am overwhelmed by the amount of choices. I plan to be in Kenya for 12d/11n. Based on reading the forums, travel guides, surfing the internet, etc, I have narrowed down my choices, but I'm not sure it is a reasonable schedule.

Day 1: Arrive Nairobi late morning and drive to Masai Mara for overnight
Day 2: Masai Mara game drives
Day 3: Masai Mara morning game drive and lunch. Drive to Lake Nakuru for overnight
Day 4: Lake Nakuru morning game drive and lunch. Drive to Aberdare for overnight
Day 5: Aberdare morning game drive. Lunch in Nairobi (and maybe an attraction). Drive to Amboseli for overnight
Day 6: Amboseli morning game drive. Drive to Tsavo East for overnight.
Day 7: Tsavo East morning game drive and lunch. Drive to Mombasa area beach resort for overnight.
Days 8-11: Days on own - enjoy beach, snorkel, day trips, etc.
Day 12: Morning on beach. Afternoon flight to Nairobi then fly home.

Is this a reasonable 7 day safari, or am I trying to visit too many parks in too short of time?

Can anyone recommend a travel agent that could book this itinerary? I have contacted numerous, and they reply giving me itineraries that do not match this one without explanation of why they changed it (maybe they are just sending me their pre-scheduled itineraries?)

I'm having a hard time deciding on the beach area - what are the pros/cons of the following areas - Watamu, Diani Beach, Nyali Beach, or Bamburi Beach?

Any tips based on personal experience would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Kenya Tour Company for Kenya Safari
Posted: Thu April 17, 2008 07:51 AM UTC
Has anyone dealt with Eastern and Southern Safaris out of Nairobi, Kenya? Am planning a 14 day safari, and am a bit leary of sending a lot of money without positive endorsements. Any suggestions as to how to protect oneself from doing busines with a potential scam operation.
