Kenya Kenya, best for safari?
Posted: Sat November 7, 2009 06:16 AM UTC
ok so this is probably already on here, but i'm looking to go to Africa next summer, I want to do a safari camping, and see the indian ocean. My targets now are Kenya or South Africa, any thoughts?

I'm not rich by any means, so i'm looking at the bare minimum, cheap hotel in safe area in Nairobi, camping safari, no wine tasting or luxury stuff, just a quality experience where i will see wild life and learn more about the culture. I'm hoping to stay under 3K, including the flight from LA, which should be around 1,500 USD. Any thoughts etc? Am i right to look at Kenya, or should i be shifting focus? Also i'm an America fire fighter, i've read stuff about Osama Bin Laden parties in Mombasa, should i be scared? lie and say i'm canadian? I have a NYC accent it's hard to lose. lol.

Thanks, and thanks to whoever started this forum.

Mombasa Visiting Mombassa Town
Posted: Mon November 2, 2009 03:01 PM UTC
We're going on holiday to Bamburi Beach again,(our 5th visit), in a few weeks time. Last time we visited was 2002.
Back in the 1990's we could visit Mombassa by Taxi and walk around for hours without any worries. In 2002 we again visited Mombassa by Taxi, and were horified to find we were the only 2 white people in the entire street, and the asmosphere was hostile.
We would like to know please what the situation is like now in Mombassa.??
Is it safe to walk around, or is a quided tour bus the only way now to see the
sites and shops.
Thank You
Katie

Nairobi Apartement Nairobi (urgent)
Posted: Fri October 30, 2009 11:43 PM UTC
Hey guys,
Im gonna be in Nairobi in a week (!) and my accommodation plans were just cancelled.
Im looking for an apartement that I could rent for 1-2 weeks. Preferably in the area Westlands or perhaps around Yaya center. Ive checked the internet but most things I find seem more expensive then i can afford (100$ or more per night for a 1 bedroomed apartement)
Does anybody have any cheaper suggestions for a 1 bedroomed apartement on such short notice?

Nairobi Budget Camping Safari in Masai Mara
Posted: Fri October 23, 2009 05:39 PM UTC
I'm very lucky! My husband has to travel to Nairobi in Nov on business. He is anxious that I travel with him as this may be his last trip down. However, it is a holiday I have not budgeted for so am trying to do as much as I can as cheaply as possible. We were hoping to travel to Masai Mara but flying tours are too expensive, if I can come up with a good overland camping trip for 1 or 2 nights at a good price I know we will go.

So please help - can anyone recommend a good budget camping trip? I am bogged down going through the internet and most don't display any prices either.

Will be very thankful of any help and assistance I get and thank you in advance

Nairobi Bussing from Nairobi to Johannesburg
Posted: Thu September 24, 2009 07:58 PM UTC
Hey, I'm a charity director from Texas, and I'll be doing field research this June in along eastern Africa for microcredit banking and micro-health insurance. My question is does anyone know the best and cheapest ways to get to Johannesburg from Nairobi (i.e. bussing (yes i know it's not going to be fun) or maybe finding a group to truck with)? Thanks for the time.

Masai Mara Game Reserve Safari Time: When is the best time to go on a Safari in the Masai Mara?
Posted: Thu September 24, 2009 12:01 PM UTC
Hi all,

I am visiting both Masai Mara and Serengeti this October. I have been given 2 safari options. One is to start for an early game drive at 6 AM and complete the safari at 10 AM and again do an afternoon game drive. The other option is to start the game drive after breakfast at around 8.30 AM and continue on the safari till 6 PM. That means we are on the safari the whole day without returning to camp till evening. My question is: Which will be the better option? I want to see the Big Five as well as the Wilder Beast Migration. If I start after 8.30 AM, will I still be able to view the big cats or is it better to start early at 6 and return, then start again for a late afternoon game drive.

Thanks to anyone who can clarify.

Masai Mara Game Reserve October Weather in Mara: good for safari?
Posted: Mon September 14, 2009 06:03 PM UTC
Hi,

What will be the weather in Masai Mara be like this October? We are from India and have been informed of the forecasts, which predict heavy rains starting from October. As we will be doing our safari in the Mara this Oct beginning, we like to know what the chances are of seeing the Big Five & the Migrating animals and whether rains would play spoilsport. We are also travelling to Serengeti, for your information.

Any help?

Thanks.

Kenya Day trip to Nairobi
Posted: Thu September 10, 2009 10:22 AM UTC
Hi,

Were travelling to Kenya in Nov for 2 weeks. Sometime during our stay we plan on heading into Nairobi for a day. I gather its to long to drive or catch a bus and as we plan only to stay for the day, flying seems the best option! Whats the average fair for this?

Thanks in advance.

Kenya advice from kisumu required!
Posted: Sat August 29, 2009 12:20 PM UTC
I wonder if you could help me.
3 of us from the UK will be staying in Kisumu for a few nights in November. We are hoping to drive from Kisumu to Nairobi, stopping off at a couple of National Parks and lakes along the way on a 4 day trip.I have had differing pieces of advice over whether it is safe to drive along the road from Kisumu to Nairobi. I have heard reports of bandits and muggings. Could you advise me on the safety of driving this route.
Thank you.
